Sarah A. Coffey was born to Leland and Myra Coffey. Myra's maiden name is said to have been Day. Sarah's exact birth date given in some genealogies as Apr. 27,1834 in Burke Co., NC has not been confirmed by me. She is known to have married Henry Steele on Dec. 16, 1866 in Caldwell Co., NC.*
The only known child born to Sarah and Henry was John Finley, born May 26, 1867 in Caldwell Co., died Oct. 14, 1958 in Roxboro, Person Co., NC.**
Sarah died c1869 and was buried at the Thompson-Steel Family Cemetery† in Lenoir, Caldwell Co.
John Finley married Martha E. Whitener, a daughter of Sidney M. and Eliza Elvira Haas‡ Whitener on Mar. 9,1892 in Lower Creek Twp., Caldwell Co. Martha died Aug. 20, 1947 in Roxboro. The only child that I am aware of was Henry W., born in Oct.,1899 at Little River.
Henry remarried sometime after Sarah's death but I have not followed the line. Henry does appear in the 1900 census at Lower Creek with his wife Mary, and were the parents of the head of the household, James D. Steele.
Leland Coffey was a son of Smith and Hannah Boone Coffey. Smith was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Smith Coffey‡

John B. & Ollie Jane Kivett Coffey
Some genealogies that I have seen claim the initial B stands for Bradley while a death certificate for one of his sons names his father as John Bradford Coffey. I'll go with Bradford until someone with good evidence convinces me it was Bradley.
John was born on May 5, 1862 in Kentucky to Ransom and Malinda A. Weaver Coffey. Sometime over the next 24 years John moved to Union Co., TN where he married Ollie Jane Kivett on Aug. 20, 1886.* The couple remained in Union county at least through the first part of 1900 when they appeared there in the census. They must have returned to KY, or perhaps did not leave before 1887, for on Feb. 5 of that year their first child, Harley Albert was born in that state.
By 1903, at least, they were in Baylor Co., TX where their eighth child, Mary Lee was born on Oct. 4 of that year. They eventually relocated to Crosby Co., TX where they remained until sometime after 1930 when John and Ollie relocated to Lubbock, TX. John died there on Jan. 5, 1940, preceded by Ollie on Nov. 28, 1935. Their remains were returned to Crosby Co., TX where they were buried in the Crosbyton cemetery.
Their children were:
Harley Albert, born Feb. 5, 1887 in KY, died at Fort Bayard, Grant Co., NM on Mar. 26, 1966. Harley married Dorothy D. "Dot" Griffin in Crosbyton. She was the daughter of Adanija and Ida M. Griffin and was born to them in Colorado on Oct. 18, 1893. She died on Feb. 15, 1995 in San Gabriel, Los Angeles Co., CA.
Romey John, born Jan. 26, 1889 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN, died Jan. 5, 1971 in Crosbyton. He married a lady by the name of Irene O. on Mar. 26, 1915 in Crosby Co. She was born Feb. 27, 1896 in Emma, TX** and died Jun. 26, 1986 in Redondo Beach, LA County, CA. She and Romey had two children: Romey, Jr., born Jan. 10, 1917 in Crosbyton and died Nov. 18,1972 in Long Beach, LA Co., CA. Second born was Hazel Margaret or, Marguerite, born c1919 in TX. Romey John, Irene and Romey, Jr. are all buried in the Crosbyton cemetery.
James Lonnie was born Dec. 19, 1891 in Union Co., TN and died in Melrose, Curry Co., NM in July, 1960. He married Clara Helena Griffin, sister to Dorothy, wife of Harley Albert. The family line between these two couples blurs a bit. In Dorothy's obituary it is written that she had a daughter named Ollie Myrtle. Of the eight children born to James and Clara was a daughter named Ollie M. I have not found Harley and Dot and do not know who their children were. I suppose it is very possible that each couple named a daughter Ollie M. or Ollie Myrtle.
The children of James and Clara were: Verlin Albert; Ruby May; Leroy; Robert C.; John L.; Ollie M.; George H.; and Edgar L.
Following James Lonnie was a daughter, Mamie Melinda, born Jul., 1894. No further information.
Florence Ellie, born Jan. 1, 1897 in Union Co., TN, died Apr. 1, 1957 in Crosbyton. Florence married George Houston Strange on Oct. 9, 1918 in Ralls, Crosby Co. He was born Nov. 13, 1894 in Tom Green Co., TX and died in Crosbyton on Apr. 19, 1981. Florence and George had one child, a daughter Edith Jewel, born Jul. 18, 1919, died Jul. 19, 1919 in Crosbyton. George and Florence are buried at Crosbyton and I suspect Edith Jewel is as well.
Stewart Hembree, born Oct. 21, 1898 in Union Co., died Nov. 19, 1974 in Levelland, Hockley Co., TX. No other information.
Madie Ethel, born c1901 in TN. No further information.

The 11th and last child born to John and Ollie was Edgar, born c1912 in TX. No further information.
Update Jul 30, 2011 Mary Lee Coffey remained unmarried until the late 40's or early 50's when she married a widower, Lewis Webster Chance. Lewis was born Mar. 3, 1878 and died Aug. 20, 1960 in Crosbyton. Mary Lee was born Oct. 4, 1903 and died Jul. 17, 1978 in Lubbock, Lubbock Co. Lewis was a son of William N. and Elizabeth Hardaway Chance. No children are thought to have been born to the Chance-Coffey marriage. Prior to his marriage to Mary Lee, Lewis had been married to Mattie Dera Benton, a daughter of D. H. and Anna Henson Benton, for about 40 years and together they had a number of children. Mattie was born Oct. 19, 1890 in TX and died in Lubbock on Feb. 17, 1948. Mary Lee is buried at Crosbyton while Lewis and Mattie are buried at the Ralls Cemetery in Crosby Co.
Sarah Azalee (or Asalee) married George Manning Reed and had at least one child, Gloria J. Reed, born c1929. Mary Lee lived with George and Sarah in 1930 and their child may be the niece Gloria Smith mentioned in Mary Lee's obituary.

CROSBYTON (Special) - Graveside services for Dorothy G. Coffey, 101 of San Gabriel, Calif., will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Crosbyton Cemetery with the Rev. Les Griffin, pastor of Crosbyton´s First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be under direction of Adams Funeral Home.
She died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 1995, in the San Gabriel Valley Community Hospital.
She was born Oct. 18, 1893, in Hagen, Colo. She married Harley Albert Coffey in Crosbyton. He died March 26, 1966. She moved to San Gabriel in 1980.
She was a homemaker, and she was a recording secretary for the Farm Bureau of New Mexico. She had also worked on the election boards. A son, Kenneth died in 1941.
Survivors include a daughter, Ollie Myrtle Kapitan of San Gabriel; a brother, Lloyd Griffin of El Monte, Calif.; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Mary Lee Chance, a 74-year-old Crosbyton resident, succumbed about 6 p.m. Monday in the Quaker Manor Nursing Home in Lubbock. She had been a resident of the nursing home. Mrs. Chance was a former Crosby County district clerk.
Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church in Crosbyton. The Rev. Bobby Rine, pastor, officiated.
Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of Adams Funeral Home. Nephews served as pallbearers.
Born Oct. 14, 1903 in Seymour, the former Mary Lee Coffey was married to Lewis Chance. He preceded his wife in death in 1960.
Mrs. Chance moved to Crosby County in 1914 from Seymour. She was a member of the Crosbyton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one brother, E. E. Coffey of Lubbock; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Paschal of Clovis, N.M., Mrs. Willie Williams of Lubbock, and Mrs. Ethel Heathington of Ralls; and one niece whom she raised, Gloria Smith of Lubbock.

William Coffey, Jr. & Mary "Polly" Rippetoe
William, Jr. was a son of William, Sr. and wife Elizabeth Osborne Coffey. He was born in VA c1762. His date of death is not yet known. He and Polly married Nov. 2, 1790 in Amherst Co., VA. A Peter Rippetoe stated that both parents gave consent; James Rippetoe was surety.
William, Sr. has sometimes been referred to as a vindictive old man because of the way he disposed of property in his will of March, 1825*:
Some researchers have interpreted the will of William, Sr. to show his disdain for his daughter-in-law, Mary "Polly" Rippetoe or, perhaps the entire Rippetoe clan. She and William, Jr. had been married 38 years when William, Sr. made his will. Why would Sr. make such a stipulation affecting the potential inheritance of his grandchildren?
The children of William and Polly Rippetoe Coffey were: Sarah; Frankey; Nancy; Osborn; Jane and Elizabeth.
I have no information on the first two. Nancy, born c1795 in Nelson Co., Had at least three illegitimate children.* They were Candis W., born c1815 and who married Benjamin J. Coffey on Jan. 28, 1836 in Nelson Co. I have been unable to identify this Benjamin's parents. Candis and Benjamin had at least seven children: Peter J.; Susan; Sarah A.; Paulina M.; George Washington; Caroline Elizabeth; and Beverly. Nancy's second illegitimate child was also a daughter, Sophia W., born c1815 in Nelson Co. Sophia married William Crost on Mar. 23, 1835 in Nelson Co.. I have no children for them. The third illegitimate child was Ann who married James Butler. I have no further info on this couple.
William, Jr.'s fourth child was Osborn, born c1796 in VA. He married on Sep. 20, 1827 to Mary Fitzgerald, his first cousin and the daughter of his father's sister Jane and her husband Benjamin Hawkins Fitzgerald. Their children were Eleanor or Ellen, born c1827; Mary Elizabeth, born c1830; Anna Mariah, born Oct. 28, 1822, died Sep. 12, 1906 in Rockbridge Co., VA; and Jane G., born c1838.
His fifth child was Jane, born c1801 in Nelson Co. She married Edmund Fitzgerald, a first cousin and son of Benjamin and Jane Coffey Hawkins. That marriage took place on Mar. 26, 1832 and resulted in at least four children: Wyatt, born 1833; Benjamin Douglas, also born 1833;** James Alexander, born c1839; and Mariah, born c1842.
The sixth and last child was Elizabeth, born c1810. I have no other information about her.

I William Coffey of the County of Nelson and State of Virginia being of sound mind and disposing memory do make declare & publish this my last will and Testament in maner and form as followith. Item I give to my son Edmund F. Coffey and to his Hiers forever that tract of land that I purchased of Joseph Burger which is the same tract that the said Edmund now lives on containing by estimation two hundred and fifteen acres to the same more or less also a negro boy named John.Although other of his daughters had children out of wedlock, he chose to single out Jane and limit her legacy to "legitament children of her body...". He left property in the hands of his trustees with instructions that William, Jr. receive land in trust during his lifetime but, upon his death it would return to the estate for the benefit of his other children. This effectively left out any heirs that William, Jr. might leave and who would otherwise be entitled to a part of the estate their father had inherited.
Item I give to Edmund F. Coffey and James Montgomery in trust & to their successors for the benefit of my daughter Jane Fitzgerald and the legitament children of her body one half of my tract of land in Nelson County on Cub Creek containing by estimation two hundred and fifteen acres the said tract of land to be equally divided according to quantity and quality. The other moiety of the said last mentioned tract of land I give to my said trustees herein before mentioned & to their successors for the benefit of my son William Coffey during his natural life, at his death to return to the rest of my children or those which I shall name hereafter, each to hold the part they now live on. Item I give to Magret Monroe that tract of land called Briges Place in Nelson County containing by survey one hundred acres be the same more or less also one hundred dollars cash to be paid by my Executors hereafter named to the care and management of George Monroe nevertheless the said Margaret is at liberty to dispose of the said land as she pleases, also one horse of the value of forty dollars & one cow & calf.
It is my desire & request that my Executors hereafter named shall rent to Jordan Coffey my tract of land whereupon the said Jordan has lived he the said Jordan paying to them for the benefit of my Estate five pounds per annum so long as my Executors shall think it prudent to rent it to him but if my Executors shall think it right to sell the said tract of land the proceeds of the said is to go to the rest of children hereafter named. Item I give to Edmund F. Coffey & James Montgomery in trust for the benefit of Elizabeth Bridge & to their successors as also for the benefit of the Hiers of her body forever one moiety of my tract of land in Augusta County on Back Creek the said tract to be equally divided according to quantity and quality. Item I give to Elizabeth Coleman, Anney Coleman, James Coleman, John Coleman, Patsey Coleman, Polley Coleman and Lucy Coleman (who are children of Mildred Coleman deceased who was Mildred Coffey) one dollar each to be paid by my Executors out of my Estate. All the rest of my Estate both real and personal of what kind or naturesoever after my just debts and funeral espenses are paid, I give to Osborn Coffey one eighth part to Edmund F. Coffey one eighth part Edmund F. Coffey and James Montgomery trustees and to their successors for the benefit of Mary Coffey and Elizabeth Bridge one eighth part each also to my said trustees and their successors for the benefit of Jane Fitzgerald and the legatimate children of her body and Winny Hays I give one eighth part each also to my said trustees for the benefit of Frankey Coffey one eighth part, also to my said trustees and successors for the benefit of William Coffey during his natural life one eighth part at his death to return to the rest of my children & my trustees to be divided among them in the same manner as the property heretofore given that was not E________ given nevertheless all those that have received any money or other property heretofore must _____ the same into Hotch pot before any division takes place on their part, except Edmund F. Coffey who is not required to account for any thing received, all the property herein given in trust is to be under the management & sole control of my trustees herein before named and their successors. It is my desire that the County Court of Nelson shall appoint trustees to and in place of those appointed by me in the last will whenever it appears they of inablity to act. Hereby revoking all former wills made by me, I do constitue and appoint my friends Edmund F. Coffey and James Montgomery my Executors of this my last will and Testament. At a Court held for Nelson County the 28th day of March 1828. This instrument of writing, purporting to be the last will and testament of William Coffey deceased was produced into said court and proved by the oaths of John Hughes, Moses W. Hughes and Peter C. Coffey three subscribing witnesses hereto, and the same is ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Edmund F. Coffey one of the Executors named in said will, who made oath and together with George Williams his security entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of twelve thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs certificate is granted him for obtaining probat of said will in due form of law. And, at a Court held for said County the 28th day of April 1828. James Montgomery, another of the Executors named in said will, personally appeared in Court, and made oath, and together with John Harris (_____" his security, acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $12,000, conditioned according to law and hereupon certificate is granted him for obtaining probat of said will, jointly with Edmund F. The sixth and last child was Elizabeth, born c1810. I have no other information about her.

Odell Cletus & Thelma Edna Coffey Deal
Sylvannas Deal, born Nov. 1, 1832, died Jul. 30, 1899 in Burke Co., NC and his wife, Mary J., maiden name unknown, were the parents of Nathaniel T. "Nathan" Deal, born in Aug., 1862.
Nathan married Mary Elvira Shell on Mar. 27, 1884 in Lovelady Twp., Caldwell Co.. Mary was the daughter of John Tipton and Martha Bisanar [sic] Shell and, was born Aug. 22, 1867 in Caldwell Co., died May 14, 1953 in Hickory, Catawba Co., NC.
Among their six known children was Odell Cletus, born Jun. 2, 1904 in Catawba Co., and who died there on Jan. 6, 1989. Odell married first to Constance Eliza Chester in NC, c1929. I know of one child, Robert Bernett, born Feb. 16, 1929 in Catawba Co. Constance died on Aug. 19, 1957 in Hickory, Catawba Co. and was buried at Catawba Memorial Park on Aug. 21.
Odell then married Thelma Edna Coffey in 1959. There were no known [to me] children.
Thelma was the daughter of William Leon and Marion Edna Norris Coffey. She was born on Feb. 28, 1915 in Watauga Co to Millard Harrison and Ida Delrea Davis Norris. She died on May 26, 1995 in Hickory and was also buried at Catawba Memorial Park. Odell died on Jan. 6, 1989 in Catawba and is believed to also be buried at Catawba Memorial Park.
Two of Millard and Ida's children also married Coffey women. Lyman Paul Norris, born Jan., 1900, married Addie Lee Coffey, a daughter of Daniel Carlton "Dell" and Mary Jane Bodenhamer Coffey. Dale Cloyd Norris, born Jan., 1910, married Anna Belle Coffey, sister to Addie Lee. Ida Delrea Davis was the daughter of Harvey Alexander and Mary Hodges Davis. Millard was a son of Isaac and Amanda Spencer Norris.
Thelma was the second to oldest of the at least nine children born to William and Marion. William was a son of William Luther and Mary Salome Moretz Coffey. William Luther was a son of Jesse Calton and Nancy A. Raines Coffey. Jesse Calton was a son of Reuben and Rachel Hayes Coffey. Reuben was a son of Jesse and Margaret Edmisten Coffey. Jesse was a son of Reuben and Sarah Scott Coffey. Reuben's parents were John and Jane Graves Coffey. John was a son of Edward and Ann Powell Coffey.*

Isaac J. Coffey
Isaac was a son of Elias Henry "Eli" and Hannah Bullen Coffey. He was born in Kentucky, probably Rockcastle or Madison Co., in April, 1854. He first married Mary Florence Hayes on Feb. 5, 1878 in Rockcastle Co. and by her fathered one child Julia Florence Coffey born in Rockcastle Co. in Feb., 1880.
Julia married Jesse B. Waller on Feb. 10, 1897 in Rockcastle Co. He was born c1868 in TN. With Jesse, Julia gave birth to at least two children: Bessie in Dec., 1897 and Laura in Feb., 1900, both in Rockcastle Co.
Mary Hayes Coffey apparently died at the birth, or shortly thereafter, of Julia for Isaac married a second time on Nov. 18, 1880, in Rockcastle Co., to Lamina A. Morris, born Jul. 1861 in KY. I have seen her named as Minnia and Minnie. A death date for her or Isaac has not been found. However, Isaac was alive in 1920 when he appeared as a widower and head of household in the Lexington, Fayette Co. census. Another occupant of the household was enumerated as Minnie but named as his mother.* In 1930, Minnie Coffey, age 68, was enumerated as a widow and the mother-in-law of Will Shelton, husband of her daughter Florida [sometimes Cora or Flora].
Isaac and Lamina had at least six children:
Thomas J., born Oct., 1880, married Mrs. Elizabeth Fathergill in KY, c1908. Elizabeth's first husband has not been found but, she brought three Fathergill children to her marriage with Thomas: Flossy, born c1898, Lucas, born c1900 and Mildren, born c1906, all in KY. They all appeared in the 1910 census at Valley View, Madison Co., KY but not in subsequent years. I have found [potentially] Mildred in 1920 as a ward of Cordelia Kendall in the Court House Pct., Franklin Co., KY. Flossie Fathergill was a roomer in the household of John P. Ashworth in 1920, Fayette Co. Lucas was not found in 1920, but there exists a gravesite for a Lucas Fatheregill in the Camp Nelson National Cemetery at Nicholasville in Jessamine Co., KY. This Lucas was born in 1898 and died in 1977. The corresponding birth years for all three of these Fathergills closely correspond to those that Elizabeth brought to her marriage with Thomas. I have found no children born to Thomas and Elizabeth.
Isaac's next child was Florida, born Feb., 1882. She first married William May and gave birth to a son, Cecil E. May, born Mar. 24, 1905 in St. Clair Twp., Butler Co., OH. In 1910 he lived with Isaac and Lamina in Madison Co., KY. In 1920 he lived with Isaac, who claimed to be a widower, in Fayette Co. and, in 1930 lived in Fayette Co. with his mother. By this time, Florida had remarried, this time to Will Shelton, born c1880 in KY. The family appeared in the 1930 census for Lexington, Fayette Co. I know of no children born to Will and Florida.
Following Florida was Cleo, born Sep., 1885. She married Charles R. Spurlock, born in OH in 1885. They were married on Sep. 6, 1904 in Madison Co., KY where they stayed until at least 1913. Their first four children were born there: Lonie, b1906; Katherine, c1908; Arnold, c1910 andVoline, c1913. A fifth child, Marie, was born c1919 in OH.
Hattie was the fourth child, born c1887 in KY. No further information.
Lillie, born Sep., 1891, married a Mr. Sauers and had at least two children: Ralph, born c1911 and Lucille, born c1914, both in KY. Lillie was a widow by 1930 and was residing with her two children in her father's residence in Lexington.
The last child that I have for Isaac and Lamina is Lucinda, born Mar., 1894 in Rockcastle Co., died there in Sept., 1894.
*Isaac was age 63; Minnie was 59 and was probably his wife.

N. B. The 1920 census for this family includes a 59-yr old Minnie Coffey whose entry appears to be "daughter" but could be "mother," indicating perhaps the "mother of the household." If not Lamina, then who is this person? Also included is "daughter" Flora, age 36. Is she Florida or Cleo?
