Hiram Kinsey & Mary Ann Evans Coffey

Hiram was born to Campbell & Elizabeth Caroline Eads Coffey on Feb. 8, 1862 in Maries Co., MO.  He died Nov. 13, 1925 in that county and was buried there at the Vienna Public Cemetery.  He and Mary Ann, a daughter of Jesse and Nancy Evans were married on Jun. 13, 1886 in Maries Co.  She died Feb. 9, 1931 and is also buried at Vienna.

The Coffeys lived their entire lives in Jackson Township, Maries Co. and raised seven children there; 5 boys and two girls.

Of the boys, William Sidney was the only one known to have married.  He was the eldest, born Apr. 4, 1887 and died of pneumonia on Mar. 18, 1922.  His wife was Mary Catherine Weidinger, born in MO in Mar., 1890.  They were parents of two children, Marie Bernice, born c1915 and James Cellus, born c1917, both in St. Louis Co., MO.  William is buried in Vienna at the public cemetery.  Before his death, William was a street car motorman in St. Louis.

Linnie Gertrude was born second on Jul. 2, 1889, died in Feb., 1973.  She married Jesse Stirling Snodgrass, born Dec. 13, 1888 in Maries Co., and died there Sep. 22, 1969.  Both are buried at the public cemetery in Vienna.  They too lived their entire lives in Vienna.  There were no known children born to the union.

The other boys were:  Earl Rufus, born Jun. 13, 1893, died Apr. 14, 1968; Sherman James, born May 14, 1897, died Sep. 12, 1972; Jesse Lee, born Apr. 14, 1900, died Jul. 23, 1989 and Thomas Roy, born Feb. 13, 1906, died Dec. 12, 2001.  Jessie was the only one to serve during WW2.  He enlisted on Nov. 18, 1942 at Jackson Barracks in St. Louis  None of them are known to have married and all are buried at Vienna in the public cemetery.

For a brief time in the 1930's Earl was a Missouri Highway Patrolman.  He later joined his brother Sherman as a building carpenter.  Jess worked for an orphanage as a laborer before joining the Army and Tom was a truck driver for the WPA in the 40's.

Born between Earl and Sherman was a daughter, Caroline Elizabeth in Apr., 1894.  She married Francis Behm, born May 18, 1890 in MO, on Nov. 14, 1912 in Maries Co.  Together they had two sons, Harold N., born c1915 in MO and Woodrow F., born Apr. 14, 1918 in Illinois, died Dec. 4, 1997 in MO.  Caroline and Francis divorced before the 1930 census.  She and her two sons were living in Pacific, Franklin Co., MO in 1930.  She was still there in 1940 but only Woodrow remained at home with her.  Caroline died on Mar. 31, 1977 and was buried at Vienna.  Francis Behm died on Sep. 12, 1968 and is also buried at Vienna.

After her divorce, Caroline worked for a time as a hotel waitress and later as a restaurant cook.

Roxanna Coffey (1858 NC-1946 TX)

Roxanna was a daughter of Athan and Mary "Polly" McGuire Coffey.  She was the eighth of their 10 known children and until I stumbled upon her death certificate, she was one of several for which I had no clue what happened to.  She was born Sep. 19, 1858 in North Carolina and died in Sherman, Grayson Co., TX on Nov. 30, 1946.

Frank & Marty NC Birth Record
She was likely born in Cherokee Co. where he family lived at least through June of 1860.  In July of 1870 the family was enumerated in Towns Co., GA.  It was in that county where Rosanna married her first husband, Joseph B. Byers on Jan. 5, 1875*.  That marriage produced two sons, Ephriam, c1876 and Joseph, Jr., c1877.  Joseph died in 1878 and was buried at the Old Union Cemetery in Young Harris, Towns Co.

For reasons not apparent to me, Roxanna returned to North Carolina where she was married c1885 to James P. Evans, born in GA, c1845.  That union produced another six children:  Luther M., born Jan., 1886; George R., born Apr., 1888; Murty (?), born Jan., 1890; Marty May, born Jan. 27, 1892**, Brasstown, Clay Co., NC; Frank Edman, born May 16, 1894** in Warne, Clay Co., and Jennie (?) P., born c1899.

At some point between the Jun. 1900 census in Brasstown and the Apr. 1910 census, Roxanne became a widow again and moved with part of her family to Grayson Co., TX.  She was enumerated there with her daughters Marty May and Jennie (?), and son Frank, where they farmed.

Around 1913. Frank married a lady by the name of Lenna.  In 1930, this family was in Littlefield, Lamb Co., TX.  Roxanna lived with them.  She died on Nov. 30, 1946 of acute broncho pneumonia at St. Vincent Hospital in Sherman, Grayson Co. and was laid to rest there at West Hill Cemetery.

I have not yet found any of her children with Joseph Byers and, so far, I have found only Frank of her Evans children.

Roxanna's sisters, Mary Emaline and Sarah Jane also married Byers men in Towns Co.  I'm certain these husbands must be related to Joseph, Roxie's first husband.  Mary Emaline married David J. Byers on Feb. 15, 1873* in Towns Co.  Sarah Jane married Phidella Ceburn Byers on Jul. 30, 1870*, also in Towns Co.  Phidella died Mar. 29, 1929 and Sarah on Feb. 8, 1942.  Both are buried at Ivylog Cemetery, in Union Co.

Contact me if you can fill in any blanks!

Update Oct. 23, 2011:  Roxanna's older sister, Sarah Jane, was born in NC on Feb. 16, 1853 and died in Union Co., GA on Feb. 8,1942.  Phidella Ceburn Byers was born Oct. 27, 1845 in NC and died Mar. 29, 1929 in Union Co., GA.  Both are buried at the Ivy Log Cemetery in Union Co.  This couple had at least 11 children.  The only one that I have so far found is Lawrence, born May 2, 1892 in NC, died Jan. 1, 1971 in Union Co.  He and his wife Lillian, and perhaps a child or two, are also buried at Ivy Log.

Joel & Sarah Bridges Litten

As best as I can determine, Joel was born in North Carolina on Nov. 13, 1798 and died on Jun. 4, 1863 in Greene Co., IN.  In between those dates he married Sarah Bridges of Lincoln Co., NC on Oct. 2, 1823.  Actually, that was the marriage bond date; they likely married the same day or, perhaps the next.*

They remained in Lincoln Co. at least through the 1830 census but, by 1850 they were in Monroe Co., IN and Green Co., IN by 1860.  Joel was buried at Kentucky Ridge Cemetery in Doans, Green Co., IN.  A headstone is present at his grave.  Sarah's death date and burial site is unknown to me.

Of their 10 (at least) children, two of them married into the Benjamin Coffey-Exia Stepp family.

The first of their children was William Kingston Litten, born c1825 in NC.  He married Sarah Ann "Sally" Coffey on Aug. 16, 1849 in Monroe Co., IN.**  They remained in Monroe Co. through at least 1850 but by 1889 they were in Gentry Co.  Sarah was a daughter of Benjamin and Exia Saphronia Stepp Coffey.  She was born Jan. 25, 1830 in Monroe Co. and died in Gentry Co. on Sep. 26, 1914.  Their burial sites are unknown to me.  Children:  Mary Jane, born 1856, died 1933 in Alanthus Grove, Gentry Co.; James H., born c1862; Albert D., born c1865; Ally C., born c1865; Tempy C., born c1869 and, Joel B., born c1872.  There may be more that I have not yet found.

Malinda Emeline Litten was the second of Joel's children to marry a Coffey.  Her husband was William Wiley, brother to Sarah Ann, wife of William Kingston Litten.  They were married Feb. 7,1850 in Monroe Co.*  William is said to have died by drowning on Jun. 18, 1865 in Gentry Co.  Malinda was born Oct. 25, 1827 in NC and died Jun. 15, 1919 in Stanberry, Cooper Twp., Gentry Co.  Malinda is buried at High Ridge Cemetery in Stanberry where William is also likely buried.  Their children were at least two:  Mary, born c1851, married John Evans c1865.  Their second child was Lorenzo Dow Coffey, born Sep. 12, 1852 in IN, died Mar. 20, 1920 in Stanberry.  He married Martha Jane Wilson c1874.  She was born Oct. 28, 1854 in Gentry Co., and died there on May 13, 1938.  Both are buried at High Ridge.  Some of their children were (from census) daughter E.N., born c1876; daughter L. A., born c1878; Hattie, born May, 1891 and Woodson, born Apr., 1893.  Lorenzo and Martha were in Stanberry from at least 1880 through 1920.

Joel's third child, Mary Adeline, born Oct. 25, 1827 in Monroe Co., IN, married Lawson Howard Coffey, another son of Benjamin and Exia Coffey.  Lawson was born Aug. 15, 1820 in Owen Co., IN, died Aug. 7, 1904 in Alanthus Grove, Gentry Co.  Mary died there c1857.  Lawson is buried at the Jennings Cemetery in Alanthus Grove and, Mary is likely there as well.  I have only two children for them:  Columbus, born c1851 in IA, died May 1, 1895 in Gentry Co., and Noah, born Mar. 5, 1852 in IN, died in Millwood, Spokane Co., WA on Jan. 25, 1916.  Columbus is buried at Jennings; Noah at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane.

Joel's sixth child, Elizabeth Caroline, born Feb. 14, 1838 in Morgan Co., IN, married James Leander "Lee" Coffey on Sep. 30, 1855 (no source).  James was a son of Hodge Rayburn and Hannah Wilson Coffey.  Hodge Coffey was a son of William Henderson and Mary Faulkner Coffey and was born c1812 in NC, probably Burke Co.  Their children (more info available) were: Martha A.; Laura; Joel; Eliza; Sarah K.; and Silas Hinkley.

On the ten children born to Joel and Sarah, I have spouses and some descendant information for five of them.  I know their child Isaac married someone by the name of Matilda, who could also be a Coffey.  He was born in IN in 1832 and died in Gentry Co. in 1815.  He and Matilda are buried at Depriest Cemetery in Albany, Gentry Co.  In 1910, Isaac was a widower and his widowed sister Malinda Coffey was living with him in Cooper Twp.

Joel's other children for which I have no info, were:  Wesley, born c1837; Martha, born c1840; Elijah, born c1844; Taletha, born c1845 and Elisha, born c1845.
