William Nathan & Ruth Allagura Coffey Livingston

William and Ruth were born born in Indiana in the year 1860;  he in August, she in December.  They were married in Owen Co., IN on Oct. 16, 1883 and two children were born to them in that county.  The first was Harry Clyde, born Apr., 1885; second was Glen Earl, born Jan. 9, 1887.  Both were born in Spencer.

By at least 1893 the family was in Oregon where third son, Frank W. was born in Aug. of that year.  The fourth and apparently last child, a son named Wallace Neil, was born in Oregon on Apr. 4, 1896.

William was a musician - which instrument is not known to me - and seems to have most often played in theaters.  During the silent film era pianists often accompanied the film being shown, adding drama, suspense and the like to films as they played to the audience.  This might be the type of musician that William was or, he could have been a classical musician and played with orchestras for actors on stage.  Later in life (1940) he gave his occupation as "manager" of the "musicians union hall" in Portland.

William died in about 1946 but I have not found his exact death date or place of burial.

Ruth, the 6th of 11 children was born to Wiley H. and Harriet Newell McDonald Coffey in Spencer in Dec., 1860.  Wiley, a son of Elijah and Mary Abby "Polly" Dyer Coffey, was born in Indiana in 1823 and died there in 1879.  Harriet was born in Indiana in 1830 and died there in 1912.  Both are buried at the Wylie [sic] Coffey Family Cemetery in Clay Twp., Owen Co., IN.  Her middle name, Ruth's middle name, Allagura is a mystery to me.

The first of Ruth and William's sons was Harry Clyde, born in Spencer, IN in 1885, was married in Oregon c1909 to a lady named Bertha.  Harry died in 1961 in Portland and I have no other information about him or his family.

Second son was Glen Earl, born 1887 in Spencer, died in Portland in 1952.  Glen worked quite a bit in garment houses, cutting cloth and sometimes worked as a tailor.  Sometime after 1930 and before 1940, he married a lady, recently divorced, by the name of Goldie Smith Winter.  Goldie said that she was born in Minnesota in 1904 and married a Mr. Winter with whom she had a daughter, Jean Winter, born c1929 in Oregon.  In 1930 Jean and her mother lived in Portland with her grandfather, William Smith.  Goldie's mother was deceased but, we know from the census record that she was born in Norway.

In 1940 only the child Jean was in the household with Glen and Goldie.  Goldie died in May, 2000 in Multnomah Co.  Glen had died some years previous, in 1952.  Glen apparently enjoyed traveling.  His name appears on a 1927 ship manifest arriving from Cherbourg in France at a port in Quebec, Canada.  He was traveling alone and, returning to his home at 828 Division St. in Portland.

Frank W. was the third son, born in 1893.  He was apparently married twice.  The first wife was a lady named Rosa and they were married c1920.  There is an Oregon death record for a Rosa Livingston who died in Coos Co., OR on Sep. 24, 1928.  When Frank died in 1963, his death record reported wife as Margery.  There is a grave marker for a Margery Livingston, born 1907, died 1979, at the Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.

Wallace Neil was the last known child born to William and Ruth.  He came along in 1896 and died in 1964. His wife was named Harriett.  Wallace served with the US Navy during WW1 and is buried at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

As can be seen, I haven't a lot of information on any of the sons and their families.  I would like to hear from anyone who can add to or correct any of this information.  I am particularly interested in locating their burial sites.

Update June 7, 2013

William Nathan and Ruth consistently appeared in the Portland, Multnomah Co. OR census record from 1900 through 1940.

According to Oregon Death Records at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VZW3-M3F, Ruth's other given name was Altazara.

Harry Clyde Livingston married Bertha F. Seely in Oregon in c1909.  They apparently had only one child, a son named Paul Vane, born in 1914, died in 1998, Multnomah Co.

Glenn Earl Livingston married Goldie Smith who had previously been married to a Mr. Winter.  She had only one child, a daughter named Jean Winter, born c1929 in OR.

Frank W. married perhaps three times.  First wife was Rose, born c1896 in OR. They appear in 1930 census for Portland.  He is also thought to have married a lady by the name of Margery and another by the name of Alberta May.  He and Alberta appear in the 1940 Multnomah Co. census.  Frank died in 1963.

Wallace Neil married a lady by the name of Harriet. When he registered for the draft in Apr., 1942, he named "Mrs. W. N. Livingston" as someone who would always know his address.  She could have been either mother or wife.  Wallace died on Mar. 14, 1964 and is buried at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.  I have found no other information about Harriet.

Wallace is the only member of this Livingston family for whom a burial place has been found.  See Find A Grave memorial 3909438.

Albert Galatin and Lois Senora Garrison Coffey

Albert was a junior, son of Albert Galatin senior and his wife Annie E. Campbell.  He married Lois Senora Garrison on Jun. 20, 1911 in Pawhuska, Osage Co., OK.  She was born in North Carolina on Mar. 2, 1891.  Albert, Jr. was born on Jan. 7, 1884 in Lincoln Co., KY.  He died in Fergus Co., MT on Jun. 20, 1967 and was buried at the Winnett City cemetery in Petroleum Co.  Lois died much earlier, on Nov. 1, 1929 shortly after giving birth to her eighth child in 15 years.  She was also buried at the Winnett cemetery.

The family left Oklahoma sometime before Sep. 12, 1918 and lived for awhile in Port Orchard, Kitsap Co., WA where Albert worked as a riveter at the navy yard.  It was on that date that Albert registered for the draft.  He and Lois lived at 1513 Elizabeth St. in Bremerton.  Albert was described on the draft registration as being tall and slender with brown eyes and black hair.  He was 34 years old at the time.

When 1920 arrived the family was still in Kitsap and Albert still worked in the navy yard.  Soon however, the family left for Montana and settled in Petroleum Co.  By 1930 Albert was a widower farmer, raising eight children by himself.  He apparently never remarried.

Children of Albert and Lois were:

Marguerite S. "Deat", born Sep. 12, 1914 in Soper, Choctaw Co., OK, died Apr. 14, 1981 in Lewistown, Fergus Co., MT.  Marguerite married Very Stanly Cook, born 1907 in Sandpoint, Bonner Co., ID, on May 22, 1943 in Winnett.  Vern died in Lewistown on Dec., 1978.

Alberta Lillian "Corky", was born in 1916, probably in Choctaw Co. as well.  She married Stanley August Zeismer, born Dec. 21, 1913 in McGrath, Aitkin Co., MN, died Nov. 9, 1990 in Seattle, King Co., WA.  Alberta died in Dec., 1989 in Winnett.

Joseph Galatin, born 1920, probably in Choctaw Co., married Margarette Livingston on May 12, 1961.  She died on Jun. 10, 1989 in Harrison, Madison Co., MT.

Twila A., born 1921 in MT, married James McCue.  He died in 1971 in Winnett.

Bill Dale, born Mar. 10, 1923 in MT, died there on Jun. 17, 1940.

Lois Madaleen, born 1925 in MT, died there on Mar. 11, 1926.

Robert E. "Bob", born 1927 in Dovetail, Petroleum Co., married Winnie Lorraine Magee in Mississippi on Aug. 14, 1959.

Mary Lou, born 1929 in Montana, married Joseph Bevis.

More information is available from the Petroleum County Public Library publication, A History of Petroleum County, Montana, Vol. 1, 1989.  The book is also available as a pdf at Rootsweb.

Cyrus V. Coffey

Cyrus was a son of Jason and Rachel Corder Coffey, born c1858 in (probably) Owen Co., IN. Jason was a son of Larkin and Catherine H. Wilson Coffey, born c1833 in North Carolina and died before 1800 in (probably) Owen Co., IN. Rachel was born c1832 in Indiana.

On Sep. 5, 1880 Cyrus married Elizabeth Ella (Ellen?) Brown, a daughter of Lewis and Ritta (Artie?) Brown. Elizabeth was born in Indiana in Jul., 1864. Cyrus died before Jun. 16, 1900 in Owen Co. because Ella - as she was enumerated - was a widow in her widower father's household census for that year.

According to the 1900 census, Ella was the mother of nine children, nine living, but only four were residing with her at the time: Flora, age 15; Ray, age 12; Wendell, age 6; and Virgie, age 3.

I believe her children were:

  • Orpha, no information

  • Charles Iomer, born May 3, 1883

  • Flora Rachel, born c1886

  • Ada Florence, born c1887

  • Jason Ray, born Mar 17, 1888

  • Nellie Mabel, no information

  • Mary Ester, no information

  • Wendell Holmes, born Mar. 5, 1894

  • Charlotte Virgie, born c1897

Charles married Mary Ann Hendricks, born c1886 in IN and had children: Edna May, born c1906; Stella M., born c1907; Dortha, born c1910; Bernice L., born c1912; Donald W., born c1915; and Wallace L., born c1918 (1920 Owen Co. census). Charles registered for the WW1 draft on Sep. 12, 1918 in Owen Co., and was described then as being 35 years old, born May 3, 1883. He was of medium height and build with light blue eyes and black hair. The family resided and farmed at RR1, Spencer, Owen Co.

Flora married Victor A. Burch, born c1886 in IN. In 1920 they were in Hendricks Co., IN and had children Helen, born c1914 and, Charles, born c1916.

Ada married Carl Von (or Van) Burch, born c1888 in IN, on Mar. 31, 1912 in Owen Co. In 1920 the family resided in Owen Co., Washington Twp., and had children: Gladys I., age 5 and, Hazel V., age 1 yr., 11 mos. In 1930 they were in Spencer Twp., and there were no additional children.

Jason apparently never married. He was enumerated as a single man in both the 1920 and 1930 Owen Co. census records. He registered for the WW1 draft on Jun. 5, 1917 in Owen Co. and was described then as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair. He was 29 years old at the time, born Mar. 17, 1888 in Spencer, IN. He was unmarried then and, a self-employed farmer.

Nellie Mabel is thought to have married Charles Wyrick.

Mary Ester is thought to have married Harry Coyal.

Wendell Holmes registered for the WW1 draft on Jun. 5, 1917 in Owen Co. He was 23 years old at the time, born Mar. 8, 1894 in Elletsville, IN. He was unmarried at the time and was described as being of medium build and height with blue eyes and brown hair. He was a farm laborer and listed his employer as P.C. Becker or Decker in Colfax, IL.

Charlotte Virgie married Ralph Sprague on May 29, 1916 in Owen Co. Ralph was born c1893 in IN. In the 1920 census they are found in Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN where Ralph is employed as a bakery salesman. The only child was Garland, a son, born c1917 in IN.
