Joel & Nancy Coffey Campbell

In November of last year I wrote a brief blog about this family.  Since that time I have been frustrated in  attempts to figure out if Joel Campbell, enumerated in the 1850 Nelson Co., VA census as a son of Joel and Nancy Coffey Campbell was really Joseph Cabell Campbell, born c1831 in Nelson Co.  I have since decided that he is and, entering Joel as his name in 1850 was a census error.

Joel and Nancy had nine children, none of them named Joel.  This is how I now have the family configured:

First Generation

1. Joel Campbell was born circa 1790 in Virginia. Joel Campbell and Nancy Coffey were married on Sep. 8, 1817 in Lovingston, Nelson Co., VA.1 Joel and Nancy appeared in the census on Nov. 15, 1850 in Nelson Co., VA.2 Some of the children in the 1850 census may not belong to Joel and Nancy. They were not listed in birth order in the census. Nancy Coffey, daughter of Edmond Stewart Coffey and Matilda Fitzgerald, was born circa 1800 in Virginia. Nancy appeared in the census on Jul. 3, 1860 in Massies Mill, Nelson Co, VA.3

Hi Jack. Just noticed your blog on Joel and Nancy. There was a son named Joel in this family. Here is one way it is proven.

In October 1850 Joel & Nancy (Coffey) Campbell were enumerated in Nelson County with son Joel who was single.

Whereas at that time their son Joseph Campbell was already residing in Augusta County with his wife Violetta Bridge and her parents at Sherando.

Since Joseph and Violetta married in July and the census was taken in October and showed Joel as single, Joseph and Joel could not be the same individual.

Records in the Reuben Lee Campbell (6 May 1827-5 Oct 1887) family state that Joel was named Joel Coffey Campbell that he was born 31 July 1825 and died 13 March 1858. I have not seen the original copy of the Reuben Campbell papers only a transcript and cannot verify if they are correct.

    Hope this helps...

Hi Jack. I know what you mean. Including for myself, lots of confusion. I was hoping to catch you before you approved the previous post. I should read my own notes more carefully. My notes actually list Joel C Campbell died in 1848, not 1858. Further down in my notes it stated that the 1850 census showed the Joel married to Lilly and that they were indeed Joseph and his wife Violetta. When I pulled up the census for 1850 the column is marked showing that they married in 1850. This means that the Lilly often listed as a child of Joel and Nancy is actually their daughter-in-law and that the Joel listed in 1850 is actually Joseph who apparently moved about in 1850. I have been trying to get my notes on this family together and in order as a project for a friends mother who descends from this line. I've collecting info on them for 30+ years but never sat down and went through it. If you can send me your e-mail when I finish up my study of the family I will gladly send it to you for your notes. 3. Hey Frank! Thanks again for the info and the update. You can write to me at jack.coffee@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing what info you have. The Fitzgerald, Coffey, Campbells, etc. have kept me occupied for a very long time. They married back and forth so many times I wonder how they all kept track of who was kin to whom.
