Joel & Nancy Coffey Campbell

In November of last year I wrote a brief blog about this family.  Since that time I have been frustrated in  attempts to figure out if Joel Campbell, enumerated in the 1850 Nelson Co., VA census as a son of Joel and Nancy Coffey Campbell was really Joseph Cabell Campbell, born c1831 in Nelson Co.  I have since decided that he is and, entering Joel as his name in 1850 was a census error.

Joel and Nancy had nine children, none of them named Joel.  This is how I now have the family configured:

First Generation

1. Joel Campbell was born circa 1790 in Virginia. Joel Campbell and Nancy Coffey were married on Sep. 8, 1817 in Lovingston, Nelson Co., VA.1 Joel and Nancy appeared in the census on Nov. 15, 1850 in Nelson Co., VA.2 Some of the children in the 1850 census may not belong to Joel and Nancy. Nancy appeared in the census on Jul. 3, 1860 in Massies Mill, Nelson Co, VA.3

Update Jul. 23, 2011:

The McGowan surname seems to have evolved to McCown.  I have seen some death records where it was spelled McCowan but, for the most part, the family appears to have been a bit more consistent with the McCown spelling.

Emma Mariah McCown was a daughter of James P. and Lucinda Isaacs McCown. Her sibling, Zachary Taylor McCown married Sarah Texanna Perkins c1869 in TX and, their son, Ivan Lynn McCown was the husband of Zula Coffey, mentioned above.  Zula was born Apr. 1, 1885 in Brown Co., TX and married Ivan c1902 in TX.  He died Jun. 9, 1940 in Zephyr, Brown Co., TX and is buried at Zephyr Cemetery with Zula.
