Captain Dick & Lettie J. McBride Coffey

Captain Dick Coffey
Lettie McBride
Captain was one of the nine sons of Joseph and Beth Ada Strunk Coffey of Kentucky.  He and Beth Ada were parents of at least 13 children, all born between 1854 and 1880 in KY and TN.  Captain was born on Jan. 19, 1872 in Flat Rock, McCreary Co., KY and died in Oneida, Scott Co., TN. on Oct. 25, 1950.  His bride was Lettie J. McBride to whom he was married on Mar. 19, 1901* in Scott Co.  Lettie was born in Oneida in 1881 and died in Scott Co. in Jan., 1926.  Both are buried in the Coffey Cemetery** in Oneida.

I have found seven children for Cap and Lettie.  They were:

Maude, born 1902, Scott Co., TN, died 1990 in Anderson Co., TN.  She married Elmer Davis in Scott Co., 1922.  He died in 1975.

Jefferson, born 1906 in Scott Co., died 1930 in Boyd Co., KY.  Married Nellie Richmond in 1923, Scott Co.

John "Johnny", born 1907 in Scott Co., died there in 1976.  Married Stella Phillips in 1931, Scott Co.  One son I know of, Lee, born 1934 in Scott Co.

Emily, born 1911 in TN, died 1930 in KY.

Walter Othel Coffey
Mamie Matilda Baltimore Coffey
Rev. Walter Othel, born 1913 in Scott Co., died 1974 in Fayette Co., KY.  His wife was Mamie Matilda Baltimore, daughter of Ben and Mamie Donelson Baltimore, born in Sparta, White Co., TN in 1915.  She died in Pine Knot, McCreary Co. in 1986.  They were married in Cooperative, McCreary Co. in 1932.  Children:  Joyce, Shelby, Patricia, Johnny, Ronnie, Phyllis, Charles and Donna Sue (not in birth order).  Walter and Mamie are both buried at Pine Knot cemetery.

Their last child was Ome, born 1916 in Oneida, died 1937 in Boyle Co., KY.

Walter O. & Mamie M. Baltimore Coffey

I touched a little on this family some time ago.

Matilda Baltimore was one of nine children born to Benjamin Edgar and Mamie Lou Donelson of White Co., TN.  Benjamin and Mamie Lou were born in Sep., 1879 in White Co.  Their headstones provide different dates, but the ones cited here come from the 1900 census.*  Ben died on May 28, 1955 and Mamie Lou on Mar. 20, 1967.  Both are buried at Eastland Cemetery in Crossville, Cumberland Co., TN.

The family remained in White Co. through at least 1922 when Luther, the last of their children was born.  In 1930 they were found in McCreary Co., KY.  Benjamin and some of his sons were coal miners in both TN and KY.

Their children were:
William Causby, born Mar. 22, 1901, died Nov. 23, 1966 at Crossville; buried at Crossville City Cemetery.
Bennie Andrew, born Mar. 7, 1904, died Aug. 11, 1919 in White Co., TN.  He is buried at Eastland Cemetery in White Co.
Vera, born c1907; apparently died young.  No other information.
John Nelson "Johnny", born Jul. 2, 1908, died May 26, 1872 at Pine Knot, McCreary Co., KY and is buried at Pine Knot Cemetery.
Lonny or Lonnie Jacob was born Jan. 30, 1911 and died Jul. 27, 1852 at Somerset, Pulaski Co., KY.  He is buried at Chitwood Cemetery in Pine Knot.
Everett, born c1914; apparently died young.  No other information.
Mamie Matilda, born Sep., 1879, died Mar. 20, 1967 in Crossville.  More below.
Edgar, born c1918; apparently died young.  No other information.
Luther, born Mar. 9, 1922, died Jan. 22, 1997 in Loyall, Harlan Co., KY.  He was buried at Resthaven Cemetery in Keith, Harlan Co., KY
Mamie Matilda is the only child and descendant of Ben and Mamie Baltimore know by me to have married into the Coffey clan.  Her husband was Walter Othel Coffey, a son of Captain Dick and Lettie J. McBride Coffey.  Walter was born on Mar. 26, 1913 in Scott Co., TN and died in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY on Dec. 5, 1974.  He and Mamie are buried at Pine Knot Cemetery.

Veteran's Day

Originally called Armistice Day, tomorrow is the day set aside to honor Veterans of all branches of the military.  This date was chosen because "the war to end all wars" was concluded on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

More than 9 million soldiers of all nations died on the battlefields and it is estimated that an equal number of non-combatants died from, genocide, starvation, disease and other privations brought on by the conflict.

Please take time to remember those Veterans in your family, whether living or deceased.  These are just a few of the Veteran headstone photos that I have and are included here as a gentle reminder to make sure you have similar photos of your family heroes.

Joyce Coffey (KY1934-2008)

The link to Joyce Coffey in the sidebar will take you to her obituary.

Joyce was the daughter of Walter Othel and Mamie Matilda Baltimore. Walter was born Mar. 26, 1913 in Scott Co., TN and died in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY on Dec. 5, 1974. I have not yet searched for information on Mamie.

Walter was the son of Captain Dick and Lettie J. McBride Coffey. Captain was born Jan. 19, 1872 in Flat Rock, McCreary Co., KY, and died Oct. 25, 1950 in Scott Co. He married Lettie on Mar. 19, 1901 in Scott Co. She was born c1881 in Oneida, Scott Co., and died there in Jan., 1926.

In addition to Walter, Captain and Lettie were parents of Maude, born 1901, died 1974; Ada, born 1903, died 1984; Jeff, born 1907, died 1930; John, born 1907, died 1976; Emily, born 1911, died 1930; and Ome, born 1916, died 1937. Walter is the only one for whom I have descendant info.

Captain was the ninth of 12 children born to Joseph and Bethada Strunk Coffey. Joseph and his family arrived in Kentucky - probably Wayne Co. - sometime before 1816. His father, James, and mother, Sarah Sumpter, both natives of North Carolina, were married in Burke Co. in 1810. The first two of their 10 (at least) children were born in North Carolina. The third child, Elizabeth, and all subsequent children, was born in Kentucky. Some of their children were born in Pulaski Co.
