Veteran's Day

Originally called Armistice Day, tomorrow is the day set aside to honor Veterans of all branches of the military.  This date was chosen because "the war to end all wars" was concluded on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

More than 9 million soldiers of all nations died on the battlefields and it is estimated that an equal number of non-combatants died from, genocide, starvation, disease and other privations brought on by the conflict.

Please take time to remember those Veterans in your family, whether living or deceased.  These are just a few of the Veteran headstone photos that I have and are included here as a gentle reminder to make sure you have similar photos of your family heroes.

Simon Peter and Mary Adeline Coffey Angel

Mary Adeline was a daughter of William and Sarah Saleney* Womble Coffey.  She was born Feb. 17, 1891, and likely in Tennessee.  She died Jun. 26, 1920 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN.  Mary married Simon Peter Angel on Oct. 19, 1912 in Campbell Co., TN.

Simon, born May 14, 1892 in Whitley Co., KY was a son of James and Narcissus Angel Angel.  Narcissus and James were first cousins, and both are buried at the Stanfill-Pleasant View Cemetery in Whitley Co., KY.  Simon died Aug. 15, 1968 in Estill Co..  Mary Adeline preceded him by more than 40 years, passing away on June 26, 1920 in Knoxville.

Simon Peter Angel registered for the draft in Campbell Co., TN on Jun. 5, 1917. He was described then as being of medium height with stout build. He had dark blue eyes and light brown hair. He was 26 yrs old, born May 14, 1891 [1892 or 1894, depending on how corrected date on card is interpreted] near Rockhold, KY. He was married with one child and employed by Kimberley Coal Co. as a coal miner in Cupp, TN.

I have found only two children for Simon and Mary:

Nellie Leoma, born Jan. 28, 1916 in Campbell Co; died May 21, 1981 in Hamilton Co., OH.  She was married to Loren Glenn McCalla.

Edith Ella, born Apr. 13, 1918 in Campbell Co.; died Dec. 31, 2005 in McMinn Co., TN.  She married Arthur Butler.

I am still searching for the burial site for Simon and Mary Adeline.  If you know, please leave a comment or contact me at the above e-mail address.
