John, sometimes referred to as "Rev. John Nelson," was a farmer in Caldwell Co. when he married Minerva Jane Coffey in that county in 1865. He was a son of John M. & Elizabeth Penley Nelson*, born in Caldwell Co. on May 19, 1841. Minerva, a daughter of Wilborn & Sarah Cottrell Coffey, was born there on Dec. 20, 1844. John likely served the Confederacy during the Civil War. There were at least three with the name from NC who enlisted.** Which if any, is this John has not been determined.
Minerva gave John at least 11 children, all born in Caldwell Co. between 1869 and 1890. They were:
Nora Cornelia, born Sep. 25, 1869, died May 22, 1953 at Belmont in South Point Twp., Gaston Co., NC. Her spouse was Seth J. Setzer, a son of Larkin and Julia Holsclaw Setzer, born c1862. They were married at Patterson on Mar. 20, 1888. Seth died on Sep. 5, 1937 at Reidsville in Rockingham Co. and Nora on May 22, 1953 at Belmont. Seth was buried at Mount Holly city cemetery in Gaston Co. while Nora was buried at Greenwood cemetery in Belmont.
Sarah, born Sep., 1870. No further information.
Thomas, born c1873, married Mary Ingle, daughter of Mark & Nancy Ingle on Jul. 24, 1898 in Patterson Twp. Mary was born c1876 in NC.
Minnie J., born Dec., 1874, married William "Willie" Estes on Feb. 15, 1903 in Johns River Twp. He was born in 1880 in NC.
Robert Lee, born Feb. 1, 1875, married Junie Mae Phillips on Jun. 28, 1913 in Caldwell Co. Robert died Jun. 6, 1955 in Lenoir; Junie there on Mar. 9, 1962. Both are buried at Lenoir in Harpers Chapel cemetery.
William Rufus was born Dec. 6, 1879 and married Kate Pearl Suddreth, a daughter of Toliver Suddreth, on Oct. 4, 1913 in Caldwell Co.Kate was born c1890. Rufus died Jun. 23, 1954 and was buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir. No info on Kate's death date and burial location. They had at least two children: Albert Lee and Edna Minerva.
Henry L. & Mary C. were born in Dec., 1880 and Aug., 1883, respectively. No further information.
George W. was born Mar., 1885 and married China Carlton on Feb. 14, 1910 in Burke Co., NC. Children that I know of were: Rubie, born c1917, Lorrane, born c1919, one unnamed, born c1926 and Willis Ester, a male?, born c1935.
Milton League, born Aug. 2, 1887, died in Lenoir on Feb. 18, 1966. Milton married Cora Lee Kirby, born Sep. 3, 1894 in Caldwell Co. on Jun. 29, 1917. Cora died Oct. 31, 1971 in Lenoir. Both are buried at the Nelson Chapel in Lenoir.
The last child born to John and Minerva was Albert J., born in Apr., 1890. He married Lucy B. Greene in 1919. She died Oct. 4, 1938 and he followed her on Apr. 22, 1939. I'm still looking for their burial places. Chidlren: Hattie Belle, born 1920; Mattie, born 1921; Annie Mae, born 1923; and Willie Wilson, born 1924.
*John H. was not the only child of John M and Elizabeth to marry a Coffey. Their son George W., born 1837, married Mary Lou Coffey on Jun. 9, 1859 in Caldwell Co. Mary Lou was a daughter of McCaleb and Elizabeth Collett Coffey. George died on Jun. 8, 1860 in Lenoir; Mary Lou on Sep. 24, 1863. They are both buried at Nelson's Chapel in Lenoir. Another of the Nelson children, a daughter named Mary Ann, married Elijah L. Coffey on Jun. 20, 1867 in Caldwell Co. Elijah was a son of William Coffey, Jr., and his wife Margaret Robbins.
**One John H. enlisted in Co. F, 6th Regiment, NC Infantry. Another enlisted in Co. D, 52d Regiment, NC Infantry and a third [John H. D.] enlisted in the 33d Regiment, NC Infantry.

Robert Lawrence "Bob" Coffey
Relatively speaking, this is a "modern" family. However, it did take a bit of concentration on my part to finally figure out that he had two wives, each named Lula!
Robert was born in Caldwell Co., NC in 1897 to Jesse Finley and Mary Elizabeth Craig Coffey. He married Lula Shell on Aug. 30, 1913 in Lenoir, the daughter of Robert and Laura Sigmon Shell.
Lula Shell Coffey gave birth to three children:
Laura Mozelle, born Jun. 8, 1914, died of tuberculosis and unmarried on Jul. 22, 1938. Laura is buried at the Union Church Cemetery in Lenoir.
Second child was Finley Tuttle, born in 1915 and died Dec. 23, 1979 in Lenoir. He married Jewel Genett Andrews, a daughter of John Finley and Lucy Bean Andrews in Caldwell Co. in 1953. Jewel was born in 1923 and died Jan. 1, 2006 in Caldwell Co. She is buried at Belleview Cemetery in Lenoir and, I suspect Finley is also buried there.
The last child born to Lula Shell Coffey was Charles Woodrow, born Oct. 26, 1917 and died of tuberculosis on Mar. 10, 1919 in Lenoir. He and his mother died very close together, perhaps on the same day but, although a death certificate for Charles has been found, none has been found for Lula.
Three years after the death of Lula Shell Coffey, "Bob" Coffey married Lula Lovina Hart, a daughter of Calvin Jones and Amanda Emmaline Wise Hart. The wedding took place on Mar. 11, 1922 in Caldwell Co. Lula Lovina Hart was born c1905 and died Apr. 5, 1978 in Caldwell Co. I do not know where either of them are buried.

She married Foke Lenoir Hartley, born Apr. 2, 1922 in Patterson Twp., Caldwell Co., a son of George Sidney Hartley and Callie Bentley. Foke died Oct. 19, 1988 in Valdese, Burke Co., NC. Their children were Doyle Sidney; Mavis Ann; and Thelma Susan, all of which are now deceased.
Mable Ruth, born Jun. 6, 1924, died Oct. 26, 1989 in Lenoir. She married George James Prestwood, born c1918 in Caldwell Co. Her obituary reads:
Mabel Ruth Coffey Prestwood, 65, of 310 Reform St. SW, Lenoir, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 1989, at Caldwell County Hospice.She was born June 6, 1924, in Caldwell County, a daughter of Robert Lee Coffey of Lenoir and the late Lula Hart Coffey.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her father, Mrs. Prestwood is survived by her husband, George James Prestwood of Charlotte; three sons, Gordon James Prestwood and Ralph Edward Prestwood, both of Lenoir, and David Lee Prestwood of San Diego, Calif.; three daughters, Georgia Ann Harris of Aiken, S.C., Shirley Jean Hitt of Statesville and Mary Jane Lebuff of Homa [sic], La.; two brothers, Lawrence Coffey of Waynesville, Mo., and Daniel Coffey of Wilmington; five sisters, Frances Hartley, Sarah Stone and Florence Prestwood, all of Lenoir, Mrs. Clyde (Alice) Smith of Morganton, and Mrs. Paul (Grace) Spears of Phoenix, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The service and interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell County Hospice.

Lemuel Hart, born Jun. 13, 1927, died Jun. 26, 1976. Lem married Dorthy Mae McMillan on Jun. 30, 1949 in Caldwell Co. She was born May 16, 1931 in Caldwell Co. to John Franklin and Amelia Ann Bishop McMillan. Dorothy died Sep. 17, 2001 in Lenoir. His obituary reads:

Lemuel Hart Coffey, 49, 210 Clearfield Drive, died Saturday evening in a Veteran's Administration hospital after an extended illness.
He was born June 13, 1927 in Caldwell County, son of Robert Lawrence and Lula Hart Coffey of Lenoir.
Coffey was employed at Kincaid Furniture Co.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his widow, Mrs. Dorthy Mae McMillian Coffey of the home; four sons, Terry Robert Coffey, Paul Gregory Coffey, Scott Bradley Coffey, all of Lenoir, and Jerry Franklin Coffey of El Paso, Tex.; three brothers, Finley Coffey of Collettsville, Larance Coffey of Missouri, and Dan Coffey of Wilmington; six sisters, Mrs. Alan (Sarah) Stone of North Wilkesboro, Mrs. Forke (Frances) Hartley of Baton, Mrs. Clyde (Alice) Smith of Morganton, Mrs. Paul (Grace) Spears of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. George (Ruth) Prestwood and Mrs. Richard (Florence) Prestwood born of Lenoir.
The funeral was to be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Lakeview Baptist Church by Rev. Michael Barlowe and Rev. Dean Harold.
Burial was to follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Reynold Setzer
Reynold Lee "Sarge" Setzer died Feb. 6, 2007, at Lenoir Health Care after a lengthy period of declining health.
Sarge was born June 29, 1930, in Caldwell County to W.C. and Amanda Walsh Setzer. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy McMillan Setzer; and a brother, Forest A. Setzer; and three infant brothers.
Survivors include his step-sons, Terry Coffey and wife Vicki of Lenoir, Jerry Coffey and wife Donna of Gray, Tenn., Scott Coffey and wife Linda of Asheville and Paul Coffey of Concord. He also is survived by five grandchildren, Suzanne Moore, Michael Coffey, Autumn Coffey, Nick Coffey and Yvonne Coffey, and two great grandchildren, Mason and Jessie Moore; a brother, Cecil B. Setzer and wife Mae; a sister-in-law, Bea Setzer; and a niece and nephew.
Sarge was assigned to the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry and completed 25 years of distinguished service, including the Korean Conflict and two tours in the Vietnam Conflict. He was later transferred to the First Armored Division and retired with honors in 1975. Master Sergeant Setzer received several commendations including the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, National Defense Medal, The Army Commendation, The United Nations Medal and The Occupational Medal in Japan.
Sarge was a long-time member of First Advent Christian Church in Lenoir where he was a member of the senior men's Sunday school class. He was a collector of military books and extensive in his knowledge of military history. He attended Lenoir High School.
At his request, there will be no public funeral services. Memorials may be made to the First Advent Christian Church Music Program, P.O. Box 1714, Lenoir, NC 28645.
Dorothy Mae McMillan Setzer, 70, of Camelot Court, Lenoir, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at Caldwell County Hospice.
She was born May 16, 1931 in Caldwell County to the late John Franklin McMillan and Amelia Ann Bishop McMillan. She was also preceded in death by her fi[r]st husband, Lemuel H. Coffey; and three brothers, Bill, Clifton and Paul McMillan.
She was a homemaker and a member of the First Advent Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Setzer of Lenoir, four sons, Terry R. Coffey of Lenoir, Jerry F. Coffey of Kannapolis, Paul G. Coffey of Hudson and Scott B. Coffey of Fletcher; one brother, the Rev. Eugene McMillan of Stuart, Va.; and five grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held.

Following Lawrence was Florence Elizabeth, born 1932. No further information.
Alice Hart, born 1935, married Clyde William Smith. No further information.
Their last three children were: Daniel Luke, born 1937; Grace Levina, born 1940 and Sarah Nell, born 1945. No further information on them.

Obituary, Lenoir Topic, Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC, May 28, 1893
To the Editor of the Lenoir Topic: Died at his home on Buffalo, in Caldwell county, May the 8th, 1893, William Coffey, aged 81 years and 8 days. His wife, Margaret, also departed this life April 26th, 1882, in the 66th year of her age. The Lord blessed them with a family of twelve children of which seven remain to mourn their loss. Brother and Sister Coffey joined the Baptist church in 1847; was soon ordained in the office of Deacon and Deaconess, which office they executed well. They both lived consistent Christian lives. We were present at the funeral of Sister Coffey, and remember hearing Brother Coffey express his desire to be asleep in Jesus with his companion. Since that time his greatest delight has been in the worship and service of the house of the Lord, often expressing a strong desire to be freed from the temptations and perplexities of this, and after an illness of about 6 months he fell asleep in the full triumphs of faith and was gathered to his loved ones that had gone before. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. M.C. and J.H.J.
Cornelius was born Jul. 27, 1844 at Buffalo Creek in Wilkes Co. and died Jun. 2, 1906 in Morganton, Burke Co. He was enumerated as a a patient at the Broughton State Hospital in Morganton in 1900. He is buried in the cemetery on the hospital grounds, his grave marked by a simple funeral home marker. I have not yet found his wife's final resting place.He married Ailsy Elizabeth "Betty" Greenfield on Feb. 20, 1868 in Caldwell Co. She was born Sep. 7, 1850 and died Jun. 11, 1928, presumably in North Carolina.
Their children, all born in Caldwell Co., were:
William Larkin, born Jun. 19, 1870, died Jan. 5, 1953 in Granite Falls, Caldwell Co. His wife was Alice Selma Setzer, daughter of Paul and Jemina Simmons Setzer, and was born Sep. 9, 1865 in NC, died Aug. 22, 1941 in Granite Falls. Both are buried there at Pinecrest Cemetery. Their children were Charles Mozer; Fannie C.; Claude Augustus; Ada M.; Walter Victor; Garland Cecil; Ethel; and Lucy Jane.
Elbert Finley, born Mar. 1, 1872, died Apr. 29, 1959 in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC. His wife was Mary Louise Lentz, born Jul. 19, 1903 in NC, died Dec. 25, 1990 in Salisbury. Elbert is buried at Westlawn Memorial Park in China Grove, Rowan Co. Mary Louise is probably there as well but, I have found no record of that. Their children were at least two: Jack Nolan and Robert J. "Bob" Coffey.
Martha Louisa, born c1874. Her spouse was Roy Abernathy. No other information on either. Their children were also at least two: Collis Odell and Julia.
John Oliver, born c1876, died May 19, 1947 in Hinesville, Liberty Co., GA. His wife was Eva Broce, born Jan. 4, 1881 in Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN, died Jan. 20, 1946 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH. After John's death, Eva married Berch E. Scott of Highland Co., OK. He was born Aug. 12, 1872 and died in Cincinnati on Aug. 4, 1943. Both are buried at Vine Street Cemetery in Cincinnati. John's children with Eva were: Bruce, born c1899 in TN; Ethel, born c1902 in TN; Fred Howard, born c1905 in TN and Edna Lucille, born c1907 in NC.
Mary Etta, born Jun. 10, 1878, died Apr. 24, 1952 in Lenoir, Caldwell Co. She married on Aug. 25, 1900 in Watauga Co. to Larkin Solomon Presnell, born Feb. 10, 1870 in Watauga Co., NC to James H. and Rebecca Green Presnell. Larkin died Jun. 24, 1941 in Caldwell Co. He is buried at Howell Cemetery in Vilas, Watauga Co. while Mary Etta rests at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir. Their children were also at least two: Clarence Haskel, born 1901 and Roy Lee, born 1903, both in Watauga Co.
Annie Elizabeth, born Aug. 22, 1881, died Sep. 14, 1946 in Lenoir. She married Aug. 25, 1901 in Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., to Jesse Steele Johnson, a son of James Harvel and Zelphia Almida Sloan Johnson. Jesse was born Jan. 24, 1881 in NC and died Sep. 12, 1965 in Lenoir. They are buried at Belleview Cemetery in Lenoir. They were also parents of at least two children: Nellie Clyde, born 1903 and Lewis Albert.
The last child was George T., born Jul., 1883, married Jul. 27, 1902 to Nellie Taylor in Burke Co., NC. I have only one child for them: Billie, a daughter, born May 28, 1908 in Lenoir.

Daniel & Matilda Setzer Crump
While sitting home today waiting for the Doctor to tell me whether or not I have mumps - which he tells me is rare these days - I was trying to come up with a Coffey-associated family to write about.
What I typically do is scroll about in my family names until I find someone that has a long list of descendants. When I settle on one name, I then check to see if I have enough facts to properly connect everyone. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't! Perhaps it did this time.
Daniel Crump is the earliest of that surname in my file. He was born c1830 in Caldwell Co., NC and married Matilda Setzer, also born in Caldwell in c1836. I have not found a death date or place for either, nor have I found a marriage date. They must have married sometime in early 1850 because their first child was born Jul. 15, 1851.
That child was David who married Mary (or, Mahulda) Jane Clarke on Dec. 29, 1869 in Caldwell Co. She was born Sep. 10, 1849 in Hudson Twp., Caldwell Co., and died in the Globe on Jan. 23, 1929. David died on Jan. 5, 1931 in Caldwell Co. Both are buried in the Globe but I know not exactly where.
The children of David and Mary - as I know them - were: Mary Jane, born Jul. 9, 1872 in Avery Co., died Aug. 11, 1968 in Banner Elk, Avery Co.; Theodore H. "Steve", born Jun. 15, 1881 in Caldwell and died in Lenoir on Jan. 27, 1975. Theodore married Cansadia [sic] Coffey c1910, the daughter of Rabon Scott and Margaret E. Hollander Coffey; and Martha Etta Destimonia "Dessie" Crump who married (2d wife) David William Coffey, a son of Joseph Reubin and Martha Elizabeth Gragg Coffey.
David William and Dessie were the parents of at least seven children, all but one living to marry and raise their own families.

Joseph Howard, born Mar. 7, 1905, died Oct. 14, 1990, married Florence Oleen Hartley, born Jun. 13, 1910, died Feb. 12, 1994. They also lived and died in Lenoir. Florence was the daughter of Granville Monroe and Cora Jane Tester Hartley.
Leonard Gilbert was born Feb. 10, 1907 and died Dec. 8, 1985. He married Beulah Crump, born Jul. 26, 1919 in Buckingham Co., VA and died Jul. 26, 1998 in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co.
Daniel Jerome, born Mar. 19, 1909, died Mar. 20, 1983 in Boone, Watauga Co. He married Lela L. (LNU), born c1914, died 1990.
Lewis B. is the only known child of David and Dessie no died young. He was born Dec. 27, 1910 and died Nov. 29, 1913.
Dillard Greene, born Dec. 7, 1912 in Avery Co., and died Aug. 10, 1988. Dillard married a distant cousin, Nancy Elizabeth Coffey, born Oct. 6, 1919, died 1989. She was the daughter of William Carlton "Will" and Bessie Mae Townsend Coffey.
Nell Verlene was the last known child of David and Dessie. She was born c1915 and died Jan. 12, 2010 in Burke Co., NC. Her husband was Samuel Leroy Beck.

Nell Verleen Coffey Beck 94, of Morganton, formerly of Lenoir, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Carolina Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Beck was born in Avery County to the late David W. Coffey and Martha Dessiemona Crump Coffey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Leroy Beck; a son, Henry M. Beck Sr.; five brothers, Howard, Dillard, Ivey, Leonard and Jerome Coffey; one sister, Jennie Coffey Joplin.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Beck was also a member of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Swenson of Colorado and Desta Ureel of Michigan; one daughter-in-law, Joann Beck of Casco Mich. She also is survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Beck were Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Pendry's Chapel with the Rev. Randy Gibson officiating the service. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family received friends at Pendry's Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.

Silas Milton & Margaret Caroline Philyaw Coffey
Silas was born Jun 16, 1886 in Blowing Rock, Watauga Co., NC to John Caroll and Nancy Evelyn Hartley Coffey. He died there on Nov. 4, 1961 and was buried in the Globe Baptist Church Cemetery at Lenoir in Caldwell Co., NC.Margaret Caroline was born in 1889, the daughter of Gideon and Martha Teague Philyaw. She died Sep. 16, 1975 in Caldwell Co. and, although I do not have proof, is likely buried with Silas at Globe.
They were married on Nov. 5, 1905 and the photograph is a record of their 50th Anniversary celebration.
There were at least 10 children born to Silas and Margaret:
Wilma Jessie, born Dec. 5, 1909 in Mortimer Twp., Caldwell Co., and died Feb. 27, 1997 in Caldwell Co. She married Ray L. Cook there in 1930.
Beeler, born Jul. 17, 1911 in Globe Twp., Caldwell Co., and died Mar. 20, 1968 in Whitnel, Caldwell Co. His wife was Lema Lou Green, a daughter of Harlan and Lou Ellen Bolick Greene. They were married in Caldwell Co. in 1932. Lena was born Jan. 16, 1915 in Caldwell Co., and died there on Aug. 3, 2000. They had at least three children: Hazel, born Apr. 25, 1938, died Mar. 11, 2003; Kenneth Walter, born Oct. 14, 1940, died Sep. 26, 2001; and Bealer Wayne, born Jan. 20, 1943, died Jul. 5, 2000.

A private service will be held at a later date.

She was retired from American Efird Mills and Bernhardt Furniture Industries and was a caregiver. She was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Marshall Edward Coffey of Boone; two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Linda) Miller of Lenoir and Mrs. Randy (Crystal) Setzer of Morganton; a brother, Jim Crump of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Myers was a homemaker and a devoted member of Union Grove Baptist Chu-rch for 59 years. She will be remembered especially for her dedication and love to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Union Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, October 15, 2006 at 3 p.m. with Reverend Sam Craven and Reverend James Lambert officiating.

Robbins was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Caldwell County to the late Silas Milton and Margaret Caroline Philyaw Coffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: six brothers, Dock Coffey, Clarence "Cub" Coffey, Bealer Coffey, Herman Coffey, Horace Coffey and Floyd Coffey; one sister, Wilma Cook, and a granddaughter, Lisa Herman.
Mrs. Robbins was a homemaker. Her family was her life and she was ours.

Lillie Faye Keller, 77, of Hawthorne St., Hudson, died Thursday, September 15, 2005 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
She was born April 16, 1928, in Caldwell County, to the late S. M. Coffey and Maggie Philyaw Coffey. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ginger Webb; a great-grandson, Caleb Webb; six brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Keller was a Homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.
She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, John J. Keller of the home; a son, Johnny Williams and wife Shelia of Granite Falls and a sister, Opal Myers of Lenoir.
Graveside service for Mrs. Keller will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 11 am at Dry Ponds Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Rick Crouse officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of Johnny Williams, 22 Valley Street, Granite Falls.

Reuben and Mary Jane Coffey Dellinger
Update 2-28-2011: Sevina W. Dellinger and Eugenia Lavinia (Genie) Dellinger are the same person. I mistook an S for an L in the 1860 census. Thanks to Lloyd Coffey for pointing this out.
Reuben Dellinger was born Oct. 20, 1920 in Lincoln Co., NC, the son of Henry and Katherine Setzer Dellinger. Reuben was a brother to Elkanna Dellinger, born c1818, died 1865, who married Elizabeth (Betty) Godsey of Rockingham Co., NC.
Mary Jane Coffey was the daughter of Jesse and Margaret Edmiston (var.), born Oct. 19, 1827 in Caldwell Co., NC and died Apr. 11, 1859 in Yancey Co., NC. I have not found a marriage date for them, but it was likely c1846 as their first child was born in December of 1847.
Mary's father was a son of Reuben and Sarah (Sally) Scott Coffey; her mother a daughter of William Harrison and Mary Suddreth Edmiston. Reuben was a son of John and Jane Graves Coffey.
Children of Reuben and Mary Jane Coffey Dellinger were:
James Pinkney Dellinger, born Dec. 31, 1847, died Jun. 21, 1896. He married his first cousin, Mary Frances Dellinger on Aug. 24, 1872. Mary Frances was the daughter of Elkanna and Betty Godsey Dellinger. James and Mary's children were (as I have them) Astor Jane, born May 25, 1882, died Feb. 10, 1963 who married her distant cousin, Julius Adore Coffey. The second child of James and Mary was Fannie Mae, born May 3, 1884 and died Oct. 26, 1966 in Watauga Co., NC. Fannie married her first cousin, Leason Elkanah Gragg, a son of David Obadiah and Frances Dellinger Gragg.

They had at least eight children: Mary Adalaide, born c1880; Rachel Carathia, born Oct. 20, 1882, died Feb. 22, 1972; Reuben Zachariah, born Jun. 15, 1884, died Jun. 12, 1961; Serena Leantine, born Apr. 1887; Julius C., born May, 1889; Flavah M., born Dec., 1890; Nora Celia, born 1882, died Feb. 22, 1951; and Zack, no dates.

"Kathy Gunter Sullivan writes that according to David Dellinger's," (sic) [I believe "Bible" is the missing word] "his mother Mary Jane (Coffey) died on 4/11/1859. The circumstances of her death appear in a personal journal kept by Jacob ("Uncle Jake") Carpenter. Though Mr. Carpenter's recollection of the date differs from the Bible entry, the indelible horror of that day is easily imagined. Here is Mr. Carpenter's account: "1859. Mary Dilinger ag 49 was cilde in mill her tress was cot rond shaf and mashed flat gin trane she lay 3 ours in mill for was fond Jun 11 I holp pol out Jacob Carpenter." The version in modern spelling and punctuation, reads: "Mary Dellinger, aged 49 (actual age was 31), was killed in a mill; her dress was caught round the shaft and she was mashed flat by the gin (engine) in the trane (drain/channel). She lay three hours in the mill before she was found, June 11 (actually April). I helped pull her out. (signed) Jacob Carpenter.
"Mary Jane's broken body was laid to rest in the Methodist churchyard adjacent to the graves of Reuben's parents. One family tradition is that her tombstone was erected by son David Dellinger after he became an adult, and there it stands: Mary J., wife of Reuben Dellinger, died April 11, 1859, aged 31 y, 5m, 12d.
"David Dellinger spoke of his mother to his grandchildren, who report: "Grandpa said he was only six years old when his Mother was killed in a mill, but he remembered how she would pick him up and carry him to the house when he would follow her to the mill barefooted" (Ruth Dellinger Lamkin). He recalled, too, how his Aunt Katherine (Dellinger) Carpenter had gathered Mary Jane's five bereft children into her own large brood and had mothered them along with her own."[Update Jul. 5, 2007: Check out the Dellinger Grist Mill website]
