John D. & Margaret Ann Walton Coffey

Marcus Lafayette Walton, born Mar. 4, 1844 in Estill Co., KY, married Rachel Hopkins, born 1850 in VA, the daughter of Jonathan and Jamima Simmons Hopkins.  Year of marriage was probably around 1868-69 but I haven't found an exact date.  They first appeared in the 1870 Irvine, Estill Co., census and were still there in 1880.  Marcus died on Dec. 6, 1895*.  Rachel lived an additional 50 years, passing away on Oct. 26, 1945 in Blackburn, Estill Co.  She was buried at Boian Cemetery in Irvine.

They were parents of at least seven children:  Margaret Ann, David, Mary, Nancy, Melvina, Evie and Nettie.

Margaret Ann, or Maggie, was born in May of 1870 and died in March of 1958 in Madison Co., KY.  Her husband was John D. Coffey, born Dec. 20, 1859 in Estill Co., to whom she was married on Oct. 10, 1889 in Irvine.**  John died in 1909 just before his last child was born in 1910.

John D. Coffey was a son of John T. & Elizabeth Jane Walton Coffey.  John T. was a son of Colby and Mary Ann Adams Coffey.  Colby was born in Wilkes Co., NC, married Mary Ann in Grainger Co., TN and lived out the remainder of their life together in Estill Co.  Elizabeth Jane was a daughter of David and Elizabeth Warford Walton.  I have not yet investigated a connection between Elizabeth Jane and Marcus, but odds are the were related.

John D. siblings were 1) Thomas Jefferson, 1858-1932, married Julina C. Walton in Irvine, 1881.  Julina was a daughter of William Jackson and Thursy Ann Coffey Walton.  William Jackson was brother to Elizabeth, wife of John T. and mother of John D.  Thursy Ann was a daughter of Colby, and sister to John T.  2) Elizabeth Jane, born 1862 in Estill Co., said to have married John Andrew Adams and died in Dawson Co., NE.***  3) William A Curtis, sometimes found as W.A.C. Coffey, born 1865 in Estill Co., married Sarah Frances Walton, another daughter of William Jackson and Thursy Ann, in 1890.  She died in 1900.  He remarried to a lady named Esther but I have no further info about that union.

There were at least 12 children born to the marriage of John D. and Margaret Ann Walton:

The eldest was John Dillard Coffey - perhaps John Dillard, Jr.? - born Dec. 16, 1892 at Jinks, in Estill Co.  John married Jessie Lu [sic] Carr on Nov. 29, 1917.  I have not found them in any census record.  He died in 1968 and she in 1976, both in Richmond, Madison Co., KY.  Both are buried at the Richmond cemetery.

David was the second child, born Aug. 15, 1894 at Jinks.  In about 1929, at age 35, he married a young girl by the name of Kitty, who was 17 years old.  The age difference apparently made little difference to either because they remained husband and wife until David's demise in 1974.  Kitty passed away in 1983.  Both are buried at the Richmond cemetery in Madison Co.  They apparently had only one child, Annie Ruth, born c1933, the only child to appear with them in the 1940 census.

Bertie Land, born 1895, apparently never married.  His mother lived with him in 1940 in Madison Co.  He died in Jul., 1982 and is also buried at Richmond cemetery.

James Allen, born Oct., 1896, died Aug., 1968 in Jefferson Co., KY.  His wife was Margaret, born 1910, died 1974.  Both are buried at La Grange, Oldham Co., KY in the Valley of Rest cemetery.

With the exception of one, I have very little info on the next four children:  Myrtle A., born 1896; Hobart L., born Mar, 1899, died Oct., 1900, buried at Garrett Cemetery at Jinks; Betty F., born c1902 and, Alma (Alva or Ava?), born c1903.

Child number nine was Clark W., born May, 1905, died Jul., 1974 at Richmond.  Clark married Zelma Lee Marshall of Madison Co. in c1925.  There were at least two children:  Louise, born c1927 and William J., born c1927.  William died in Sep. 2000 at Madison Co. and is buried at Richmond cemetery.  Zelma died in Sep., 1984 and is buried with Clark at Richmond.

George P, born in Aug., 1906, was next born.  He married a lady whose surname was possibly Wren, given name Hazel.  George died rather suddenly in June, 1930 while living with Hazel at Duncanon in Madison Co.  They had one son, Kenneth B., born c1929.  George is buried at Fairview cemetery in Conway, Rockcastle Co., KY.  In 1940 Kenneth was residing with some Wren relatives, headed by Arthur Wren, an uncle, in Rockcastle Co.  Hazel likely remarried or died but I have not been able to locate her after 1930.

The last two children were Robert H., born Mar., 1908, died Nov., 1991 and, Beulah B., born Mar., 1910, died Oct., 1997.  Both married but I have not yet been able to locate family information.

Additions and corrections welcomed.

Cornelius & Ailsy Elizabeth Greenfield Coffey

Betty Greenfield Coffey
Cornelius Coffey
Cornelius Coffey was the fifth child of at least 11 born to William Coffey, Jr. and his wife Margaret Robbins.  William, Jr. was a native of Yadkin Valley, born May 5, 1812 in that part of Wilkes Co., NC that later became part of Caldwell Co.  Margaret was born c1816 in North Carolina, the exact area is unknown.  He died May 8, 1893 in Buffalo Twp., Caldwell Co..  Margaret preceded him in death on Apr 26,1882.
Obituary, Lenoir Topic, Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC, May 28, 1893

To the Editor of the Lenoir Topic:  Died at his home on Buffalo, in Caldwell county, May the 8th, 1893, William Coffey, aged 81 years and 8 days.  His wife, Margaret, also departed this life April 26th, 1882, in the 66th year of her age.  The Lord blessed them with a family of twelve children of which seven remain to mourn their loss.  Brother and Sister Coffey joined the Baptist church in 1847; was soon ordained in the office of Deacon and Deaconess, which office they executed well.  They both lived consistent Christian lives.  We were present at the funeral of Sister Coffey, and remember hearing Brother Coffey express his desire to be asleep in Jesus with his companion.  Since that time his greatest delight has been in the worship and service of the house of the Lord, often expressing a strong desire to be freed from the temptations and perplexities of this, and after an illness of about 6 months he fell asleep in the full triumphs of faith and was gathered to his loved ones that had gone before.  Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.  M.C. and J.H.J.
Cornelius was born Jul. 27, 1844 at Buffalo Creek in Wilkes Co. and died Jun. 2, 1906 in Morganton, Burke Co.  He was enumerated as a a patient at the Broughton State Hospital in Morganton in 1900.  He is buried in the cemetery on the hospital grounds, his grave marked by a simple funeral home marker.  I have not yet found his wife's final resting place.

He married Ailsy Elizabeth "Betty" Greenfield on Feb. 20, 1868 in Caldwell Co.  She was born Sep. 7, 1850 and died Jun. 11, 1928, presumably in North Carolina.

Their children, all born in Caldwell Co., were:

William Larkin, born Jun. 19, 1870, died Jan. 5, 1953 in Granite Falls, Caldwell Co.  His wife was Alice Selma Setzer, daughter of Paul and Jemina Simmons Setzer, and was born Sep. 9, 1865 in NC, died Aug. 22, 1941 in Granite Falls.  Both are buried there at Pinecrest Cemetery.  Their children were Charles Mozer; Fannie C.; Claude Augustus; Ada M.; Walter Victor; Garland Cecil; Ethel; and Lucy Jane.

Elbert Finley, born Mar. 1, 1872, died Apr. 29, 1959 in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC.  His wife was Mary Louise Lentz, born Jul. 19, 1903 in NC, died Dec. 25, 1990 in Salisbury.  Elbert is buried at Westlawn Memorial Park in China Grove, Rowan Co.  Mary Louise is probably there as well but, I have found no record of that.  Their children were at least two:  Jack Nolan and Robert J. "Bob" Coffey.

Martha Louisa, born c1874.  Her spouse was Roy Abernathy.  No other information on either.  Their children were also at least two:  Collis Odell and Julia.

John Oliver, born c1876, died May 19, 1947 in Hinesville, Liberty Co., GA.  His wife was Eva Broce, born Jan. 4, 1881 in Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN, died Jan. 20, 1946 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.  After John's death, Eva married Berch E. Scott of Highland Co., OK.  He was born Aug. 12, 1872 and died in Cincinnati on Aug. 4, 1943.  Both are buried at Vine Street Cemetery in Cincinnati.  John's children with Eva were:  Bruce, born c1899 in TN; Ethel, born c1902 in TN; Fred Howard, born c1905 in TN and Edna Lucille, born c1907 in NC.

Mary Etta, born Jun. 10, 1878, died Apr. 24, 1952 in Lenoir, Caldwell Co.  She married on Aug. 25, 1900 in Watauga Co. to Larkin Solomon Presnell, born Feb. 10, 1870 in Watauga Co., NC to James H. and Rebecca Green Presnell.  Larkin died Jun. 24, 1941 in Caldwell Co.  He is buried at Howell Cemetery in Vilas, Watauga Co. while Mary Etta rests at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.  Their children were also at least two:  Clarence Haskel, born 1901 and Roy Lee, born 1903, both in Watauga Co.

Annie Elizabeth, born Aug. 22, 1881, died Sep. 14, 1946 in Lenoir.  She married Aug. 25, 1901 in Yadkin Valley, Caldwell Co., to Jesse Steele Johnson, a son of James Harvel and Zelphia Almida Sloan Johnson.  Jesse was born Jan. 24, 1881 in NC and died Sep. 12, 1965 in Lenoir.  They are buried at Belleview Cemetery in Lenoir.  They were also parents of at least two children:  Nellie Clyde, born 1903 and Lewis Albert.

The last child was George T., born Jul., 1883, married Jul. 27, 1902 to Nellie Taylor in Burke Co., NC.  I have only one child for them:  Billie, a daughter, born May 28, 1908 in Lenoir.

New Coffee Web Site

I have just received an e-mail from my friend Kathy Coffee Simmons informing me that she has fired up a new web page on genealogy.com.

Here's how the page begins:

"This genealogy is mostly the work of others, including my grandfather, Woodson Coffee, and his son, Woods Coffee, Jr.

He began searching for his roots in the 1920's, and 1930's, and kept it all in writing. Bless him, and all the other "cousins" who have so generously shared their findings over the years."
In addition to a family tree showing the descendants of Nathan Coffee, born 1760 in Wilkes Co., NC, Kathy has also included an autobiography of Woodson Coffee, and a report on the descendants of Logan Coffee.

I'm certain she will be expanding the site as time permits.

Give it a look here.

Gilbert and Martha Simmons Coffey

This is an update to the family blog published here.

Gilbert was a son of Thomas and Mary Hipsher Coffey, born May 31, 1839 in Grainger Co., TN. He and Martha, born Sep. 23, 1844 in MO, died Aug. 10, 1913 in Polk Co., MO, on Jun. 26, 1858 in Cedar Co., MO. Gilbert died Jun. 3, 1915 in Polk Co., MO.

There were 12 children born to this union:

Henderson, born Aug., 1858 in MO, died Nov. 15, 1925 in Oregon. He married Mrs. Henrietta Press Davis, daughter of Henry and Eliza B. Press, c1898. Henrietta was born in Mar. 1860 in Michigan. They had at least three children: Edna, born Apr., 1891 in Washington, Gilbert Thomas, born Nov., 1898 in Washington, and Homer Russell, born Jul. 20, 1900 in Oregon, died Oct. 23, 1959. The family appeared in the Clackamas Co., OR census from 1900 to 1920. Henderson's death is recorded in the Oregon Death Index (1903-1998), certificate no. 781.

Thomas Cimean [sic], born Oct. 22, 1861, died Oct. 2, 1924 in Polk Co., MO. He married Sarah Alice Combs on Apr. 2, 1881 in Polk Co. Sarah was born Apr. 16, 1865 and died Mar. 22, 1891 in Polk Co. a few days after giving birth to their third child. Their known children were: Alta Lou, born Jan. 1, 1885, William Leonard, born Aug. 28, 1888, and Ernest H., born Mar. 16, 1891. Some genealogies report Thomas married again within a few days to Mahalia Luvenia Crain. She was born Dec. 22, 1870 and died Jan. 30, 1947 in Polk Co. Their children were Girtha Coffey, a son, born Sep. 19, 1892, and Stella L., born Feb. 1895.  Thomas and Mahalia are buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Aldrich, Polk Co., MO

Update:  Sarah Alice Combs Coffey apparently died shortly after giving birth to her fourth child, Ernest H., born Mar. 16, 1891 in Polk Co., MO, died Feb. 5, 1978 in Bolivar, Polk Co.  Ernest married Gertrude Lawson, born Jun. 16, 1890 in Bolivar and died there on Mar. 14, 1977

Mary Jane, born c1864 in Polk Co.  She was with the family in 1870 and 1880 and then likely married.  I have not yet located a marriage record.

Amanda Evelin "Manda" born Sep. 23, 1865 in Polk Co., died there on May 6, 1946.  She married John Wesley Scroggins, born Oct. 18, 1863, in Polk Co., died there on Apr. 15, 1935.  Both are buried at the Enon Cemetery in Wishart, Polk Co.

I know little about the next four children:  Alfred, born c1868; Ora, born Jan., 1870 and William Ira, born Dec. 15, 1870, died Nov. 15, 1871 and, Austin, born c1871.

Lloyd Lawson, born Oct. 28, 1874, died Nov. 14, 1946. He married Ellen Wiley, born Dec. 16, 1874, died Feb. 9, 1964. Lloyd registered for the WW1 draft on Sep. 16, 1918 in Polk Co. He gave his age as "about 46" and did not know his birth date. He was a farmer in Wishart, Polk Co., MO. His death is recorded on Missouri death certificate no. 41645.  Both are buried at Enon Cemetery

Again, I know little about the last three children:  James O., born c1875, died Aug., 1875; Fannie, no information; and Allie, born Sep. 30, 1885.

In 1900 Martha reported to the census taker that she was the mother of 12 children, but only 6 were still living.

Additions and/or corrections welcomed.
