Wiley Dalton

I haven't written very much about the Dalton clan of Grainger Co., TN.  Perhaps this one will cause me to pay more attention to those lines that co-mingled with the Coffeys' of that county.[1]

This is the a photo of James Enoch Dalton, the youngest son of Wiley and Jane Harville Dalton.  James was born 6 Oct 1890 in Grainger Co., and died there in 1 Aug 1921.  He married Eva Viola White on 13 Dec 1913 in that county.  Eva was born 17 Nov 1895 in Tennessee, probably Grainger, and died there on 12 Aug 1996.

The following is the obituary for James Enoch which appeared in the Mulberry Gap Association of Baptist Minutes, dated Aug 28-30, 1923:

Enoch Dalton, son of Wiley and Jane Dalton was born October 6, 1890.  Was married to Eva White, December 13, 1923 [sic] [1913].  He professed Faith in Christ at Cedar Springs, January, 1910, and joined the church at Cedar Springs, May 11, 1912.  There he lived a faithful Christian and a Sunday School worker until his death, August 1, 1921.  He told his wife and friends for them not to grieve for him, while he was getting cold in death.  He leaves a wife, one little son about 2 years old, father and mother, and 4 brothers and a host of relatives and friends to mourn for him.  He was an obedient son, a kind brother, and a loving husband.  Sleep on dear one, will meet "Never To Part Again."  [submitted by] David Headrick

The photo of James Enoch and wife, with Enoch's father, Wiley, also pictures the only child of Enoch and Wiley, Lloyd Herman Dalton, born 4 Sep 1919. I would estimate the child is right at one year, perhaps a little less. James died of enterocolitis and typhoid fever.  He was buried at the White Cemetery in Thorn Hill, Grainger Co.

Eva Viola White's second husband was Samuel Gill Dalton, a son of Elijah Diltha and Emaline Holland Dalton and an uncle to James Enoch. They were married 31 May 1930 and were parents of Wretha and Letha Dalton, born c1932, half-sisters and second cousins to Lloyd Herman Dalton.

Samuel Gill was born 18 Jan 1879 in Grainger Co., and died in Knox Co., TN on 14 Sep 1947. Eva died 12 Aug 1996. Samuel is buried at the Graveston Baptist Church Cemetery in Corryton, Knox Co. while Samuel is buried at Lynnhurst Cemetery in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN. Lloyd died 12 Apr 1982 and is also buried at Lynnhurst. He was a sixth great grandson of Edward Coffey and Ann Powell.
