Some previous Kilpatrick family blogs can be read here and here.
Balis Jackson Kilpatrick, born Aug. 2, 1796 in the Greenville district of South Carolina, married c1820 Mary E. Hunter, born Aug. 18, 1802 in Buncombe Co., NC. Together they had at least five children, all of whom married into North Carolina Coffey families. Balis died in Sep., 1872 and was buried at the Liberty community cemetery at Liberty in Cherokee Co., NC. See his memorial on Find-A-Grave for a discussion of his genealogy.
The children of Balis and Mary that I have found are:
Catherine, born Nov. 24, 1839 in Haywood Co., NC, died sometime between 1910 and 1920* at Shoal Creek in Cherokee Co., NC. Catherine married Levi Coffey, a son of Rice and Dorotha [sic] Jane Medaris Coffey c1852* in Cherokee Co.
Elias, born Oct. 9, 1832 in NC, died 1891 in Clay Co., NC. He married Sarah Jane "Sallie" Coffey, a daughter of John Morgan and Elizabeth Day Coffey, on May 25, 1865*** in Town Co., GA. Elias died in Clay Co. NC in 1891 and is buried at Old Brasstown Baptist Church cemetery in Young Harris, Towns Co. I have no death or burial info for Sarah Jane.
John Abner, born Nov., 1834 in NC, died Sep. 3, 1912 in Cherokee Co., NC. He married Dorotha [sic] A. Coffey, daughter of Rice and Dorotha Jane Medaris Coffey, in 1873.* He was close to 40 at the time of marriage and was likely married prior to Dorotha. She and John appeared in the 1870 census at Shoal Creek making the marriage year probably incorrect. Dorotha died on Nov. 29, 1922 and was buried at Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Murphy, Cherokee Co., NC. John died in Sep., 1912 and is also buried there.
Balis Jackson, Jr., born Dec. 16, 1838 in NC, died in that state on Mar. 25, 1906. He is buried at Moss Cemetery in Marble Valley Twp., Cherokee Co. He married Elizabeth Coffey, a daughter of John Morgan and Elizabeth Day Coffey and sister to Sarah who married Elias, sometime in the early 1870's. Elizabeth was born Apr. 7, 1842 in Burke Co., NC and died in NC on Jan. 27, 1914. She is also buried at Moss.
Elijah, born Sep. 14, 1841 in Union Co., GA, died Jan. 6, 1910 in NC and buried at Liberty Community Cemetery at Liberty in Cherokee Co., NC. His first wife was Vina Jones.* He married second Mary Melinda "Polly" Coffey, daughter of Rice and Dorotha, on Sep. 6, 1877* in Shoal Creek. Polly died c1899.
The Balis Jackson discussion at Find-A-Grave makes the case that Elias and Elijah were twins, born Sep. 15, 1841 in Union Co., GA.

James & Nancy Greene Coffey
This James was born in 1806, probably in Cherokee Co., NC. He was a son of Levi and Dolly Edmundson Coffey and, brother to Rice, Mary Ann, James, Robert, John, Keziah, Elisha, Levi, Jr., and Nancy.
Rice married Dorothy Jane Medaris; James married Nancy Greene; Robert married Mary LNU, Elisha married Anna Harmon Moody; and Levi, Jr. married Louisa Turnbull.
My interest at the moment is centered on James who married Nancy Greene, a daughter of John “Moccasin” and Elizabeth Coffey Greene. Elizabeth Coffey Greene was a first cousin to James.
Their children were Abram, born c1829; Charity, born c1831; Sarah Elizabeth, born 1836; Daniel M., born c1844; James W., born c1846; and Mary Jane, born c1847. All were likely born in Cherokee Co.
Sarah Elizabeth married Thomas Cummins West on Dec. 16, 1855 in Murphy, Cherokee Co. He was born May 14, 1834 in Buncombe Co., NC and died in Graham Co., AZ on Jan. 8, 1888. Sarah died Dec. 19, 1877 in McKinley Co., NM. Thomas is buried at Graham Cemetery while Sarah was buried at Savola Pioneer Cemetery in McKinley Co.
James W. married Jane LNU and had a daughter named Dora, born c1878 in NC.
Mary Jane was born c1847 and is said to have married Henry Alexander Ditmore.
While researching this family I found a marriage for a Jane Ditmore in Clay Co., NC dated 25 Feb. 1875. Her parents were named as James and Nancy Coffey. One genealogy that I have found reports that a Mary Jane Coffey married Henry Alexander Ditmore c1865 in Cherokee Co. A search for Henry Alexander Ditmore found him in Tom Greene Co., TX where he died in 1923. His wife was named Elvira and they are said to have married c1869 in Panola Co., TX. He was a native of McMinn Co., TN.
The thought occurred to me that the above Jane LNU who James W. Coffey might be Mary Jane Coffey Ditmore. There are problems with this thought, however: James W. and Mary Jane Coffey Ditmore were brother and sister and, the marriage record for Jane Coffey Ditmore shows her groom to be James M. Coffey, a son of John Coffey.*
Update 8/15/2013:
Henry Alexander Ditmore (son). Henry was born September 27, 1841 in McMinn County, Tennessee. About 1844 his family moved to Cherokee County, North Carolina. In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served for the duration of the war. After the war ended he returned home to Cherokee County, North Carolina where he married Mary Jane Coffey. They had one son.
He left Mary and moved west where he settled in Panola County, Texas and remarried to Elvira C. Mathews. They had thirteen children. Around 1886 the family moved to San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas. Henry died there on January 29, 1923.
Thanks to Elizabeth [lizzyiscrazy23 @ gmail.com] for the update!
The marriage info below* is that of Henry's former wife, Mary Jane Coffey and her marriage to James M. Coffey. James M. was a son of James Coffey and Nancy Greene, born c1846 in NC.
Henry Alexander Ditmore and his second wife, Elvira C. Mathews, are buried at the Grape Creek Cemetery in Grape Creek, Tom Green Co., TX.

Martha Coffey
Martha - sixth child and second daughter of Rice and Dorotha Jane Medaris Coffey:
According to her death certificate Martha was born in 1847 in Brasstown, Clay Co., NC. It is more likely however, that she was born while the family resided in Cherokee Co., NC where she was found with her parents in the 1850 census.
Martha and her parents were in Towns Co., GA in 1860 but by 1873 she was in Brasstown, Clay Co. where she was married to William Columbus (Lum) Beach on Aug. 25th of that year.
Lum and Martha remained in that area the remainder of their lives. She died there from influenza on Apr. 9, 1926, and was buried in the Copperhill Church Cemetery in Brasstown. Lum died the next day, also from influenza. He was also buried at Copperhill.
I have found only three children for Lum and Martha:
Hanible, born c1874 in Clay Co., and married Martha L. c1898 in NC. She was born in Apr., 1881. In 1900 there was only one child in the household: Willie, born Feb., 1898
The other two children were Georgia, born c1877 and Mary, born Oct., 1880.

Rice Coffey [follow-up]
A little more research, and additions/corrections by Janine Ramsey, has revealed more information on Rice Coffey, a son of Levi and Dolly Edmundson Coffey.
We do not yet know when Rice died. He has been found in the 1870 census residing in the household with the John and Rachel Padgett family in Hayesville Twp., Clay Co., NC, and was reported to be "insane" in that census.
Rachel Padgett is believed to be a younger sister of Rice's wife, Dorotha Jane Medaris. Dorotha probably died prior to 1870, and Rice prior to 1880.
John Padgett was born c1803 and Rachel c1813, both in NC. Two children have been found: Roseline, born c1849 and Festus Lander, born c1851. Roseline was unmarried and found in both the 1870 and 1880 census with her parents. Festus was found with the family in 1870. I am still searching for them in 1850 and 1860.

Rice Coffey
This particular Rice Coffey was born c1802 in North Carolina to Levi and Dorothy (Dolly) Edmundson Coffey.
Janine Ramsey is a descendant of Rice through his son Levi. I believe this is the Levi born c1829 in NC, died Jul. 20, 1863 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN from wounds received while serving with Co. G., 65th GA Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.1
Levi married Katherine Kilpatrick, a daughter of Balis Jackson and Mary E. Hunter Kilpatrick. Katherine's brother, Abner married Levi's sister, Dorothy Coffey. Abner and Dorothy had at least one son, William Riley, born Jul. 14, 1872 in Cherokee Co., and died there on Dec. 5, 1947.
Janine has been searching for the maiden name of Rice's wife, known until now only as Jane, born c1804 in NC. Janine recently sent an e-mail to which she attached a Cherokee Co., NC death certificate for Doratha [sic] Kilpatrick, born Sep. 22, 1832 in NC, died Nov. 29,1922 in Cherokee Co. Doratha's parents were reported on the certificate as Rice Coffee [sic] and Dartha [sic] Medaris. Janine believes that Dartha was Dartha Jane Medaris, the daughter of William H. Medaris and Susanna Nicholson who lived in Cherokee and Burke Counties, NC.
To add more credibility to the find, Janine included a page from the 1850 Cherokee Co., NC census showing a William Medaris family as next door neighbors to Rice and Jane. This William is about 11 years younger than Dartha, but his surname lends additional evidence.
The death certificate for Doratha indicates that her husband was Riley Kilpatrick, but this is an error. Riley was actually her son, William Riley, born Jul. 14, 1872 in Cherokee Co., and who died there on Dec. 5, 1947.
Abner and Doratha [which was likely actually Dorothy] had two additional children: Lillie E., born c1875 and remained single and with her mother at least through the 1920 census; and Andrew, born c1876.
Congratulations to Janine for this find!
