William Perry Coffey (1857-1926)

Part IV

William's first wife, Jane Helen Wemple passed away sometime between Jun 15, 1880 and Jul. 7, 1882.  She was present in the household at the 1880 census and on that date in 1882 [date unproven], William married her sister, Mary Ellen.

Mary Ellen had been previously married to John J. Roark on Oct. 8, 1876 in Howell Co., MOIn 1880 she was living with her father but Mr. Roark was not in the household and, there were no Roark children in the family. William and wife Jane were enumerated in an adjacent household.

The children born to William and Mary Ellen were as follows:

Vital Record Amendment to Birth
Record for Allene Margruette Coffey (Hart)
Samuel Wemple, born Mar. 25,1883 in Howell Co., died Dec. 28, 1951 in Santa Cruz Co., CA.  His spouse was Etta M. Fritz. [marriage date unknown]  One child was born to this union.  She was Allene Marguerette Coffey, born Nov. 10, 1912 in Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ.  Her name is obscured on the face of the document.  However, an Amendment to Vital Record was found in which personal affidavits by her aunt, Rosa L. Daugherty and cousin, Donald E. Doris in March, 1959, and a Baptism and Confirmation certificate by the Latter Day Saints Church, James W. Challis, Mission President, dated May, 1954 confirms her name and birth date.2  This same document shows the Registrant's name as "Allene Margruette Coffey (Hart)"

Etta may have died at the birth of Allene because in 1930 Sam appeared in the census for Pittsburg, Contra Costa, CA with wife Audrey B., a stepson named Howard Minkler, age 16, born in Oregon and Allene, daughter, age 17, born in Arizona.3  A bit of luck caused me to stumble upon the grave of Martha Jane "Mattie" Millerat Find A Grave.  An obituary and bio on that site told me that she had been previously married to Frank Ransome Minkler.  I believe there is an error in the bio however.  She was likely Frank's first wife, and not his first.  I also discovered that in addition to Howard, Audrey and Frank had a daughter named Audrey, born c1916. She does not appear in the 1930 census with Samuel and Audrey.

Frank Ransome Minkler and Audrey last appeared together as a family in the 1920 census for Eureka, Humboldt Co., CA.

Samuel Coffey died on Dec. 28, 1951 in Santa Cruz Co., CA.  Neither Etta, Audrey nor his burial site is known.

Lula, second child born to William and Mary Ellen, arrived in West Plains on Oct. 16, 1884.  She married George Washington Roberts there on May 22, 1905.  George was born in Caney, Montgomery Co., KS on Dec. 22, 1884 and died in Eureka Humboldt Co., CA on Oct. 20, 1948.  Lula died there on Feb. 11,1955.  Both she and George are thought to have been buried at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka.  They likely had more children but I know of only three:  Georgia Ellen; Frank Andrew and Gladys Louise.

Minnie followed Lula on Dec. 5, 1887 in West Plains but died there the following August and was buried there, site not known.

The family moved south from Missouri into Arkansas for awhile.  It was there in Newport, Jackson Co. that the fourth child, Rose Etta was born on Jan. 14, 1889.  The family moved on from there into OK where Rose is said to have married Clarence Elwood Woods on Aug. 6, 1911 in Nowata Co. [no marriage record found]  In 1920 she and Clarence were found in Drumright, Creek Co., OK and 1930 in Tulsa, Tulsa Co., OK.  Some genealogies report that Rose was first married to James Cook but, I have found no evidence of that.  She and Woods were divorced and, in the 1940 census, Rose was enumerated as a divorced woman with seven children residing in Eureka, Humboldt Co., CA.  That record shows that she was living in Sand Springs, OK in 1935 and in 1940 worked as a sales lady.  Mr. Woods has not been located in that census and is said to have died in Los Angeles in Mar., 1948.

Their children were:

Elmer Clarence, born Jun 3, 1912 in Coffeyville, Montgomery Co., KS, died there in Apr., 1915. [no locations or confirmed sources]

Glen Walter, work Aug. 9, 1914 in Coffeyville, married Jun. 8, 1940 to Obabel Ingerbretsen.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Grace Margaret, born Aug. 27, 1916 in Drumright, Creek Co., OK.; married Ethridge Strickland on Sep. 1, 2939 and died on Feb. 20, 1987.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Bruce Howard, born Sep. 30, 1919 in Bristow, Creek Co., OK; married Twila Schadawitz in 1943.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Lula Ellen "Bunny," born Jul. 7, 1922 in Bristow; married Howard Divinie on Sep. 12, 1946. [no locations or confirmed sources]

Donald Woodrow, born Jun. 9, 1924 in Bristow, married Margaret Hansen in 1947.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Elizabeth Ruth, born Sep 1, 1926 in Bristow, married Thurman Lanning on Dec. 20, 1952.  I am unsure of the marriage date.  Thurman had been previously married to Irene Alice Kasza in 1942.  She died in Los Angeles, CA on Aug. 19, 1952 and was buried at Glendale, Los Angeles Co. in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in that city.  Thurman died on Jul. 18, 2007 in Springfield, Lane Co., OR; Ruth died earlier on Jul. 27, 2002.  Both are buried at Springfield Memorial Gardens, in Springfield, Lane Co., OR.  Both Thurman and Ruth were Coffey Cousins.

There were two other children born to Clarence and Rose Etta; a son Bernard Vernon, born Jul. 18, 1929 in Bristow and a daughter, Barbara, born c1933 in OK.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Questions, additions, corrections welcomed!

David Porter, born 8 Mar 1780 in Rockbridge Co, VA, and died on 16 July 1849 on the Oregon Trail '"days journey beyond Fort Hall (Idaho) towards Soda Springs." "In 1811, David and Nancy Porter joined a closely knit group of relatives and neighbors from TN in migrating to Lincoln Co, MO. These included Sittons, Gibsons, Wilsons, and other families who intermarried with the Porters. All were pioneers on the MO frontier a few miles northwest of St. Louis, near St. Charles. By 1819, David Porter began buying land near Big Creek southwest of Troy, MO. He established his home there for a while. In late 1835, he became dissatisfied with the area and moved to Pike Co, IL. In the spring of 1849, when he was 69 years old, accompanied by his son-in-law Samuel Sitton, he joined a wagon train to Oregon, where several of his married children had gone the previous year. William Leon & Marion Edna Norris Coffey

This couple married c1912, probably in Watauga Co., NC.  William was a son of William Luther and Mary Salome Moretz Coffey, born Jul. 19, 1892 in Watauga Co.  Marion was the daughter of Millard Harrison and Ida Delrea Davis Norris and was born Oct. 7, 1895, also in Watauga Co.

When William Leon registered for the draft in WW1, he did so on June. 5, 1917 in Watauga Co.  He was described as being tall with medium build, blue eyes and light colored hair.  He was 24 years old, born July 29, 1893 at Meat Camp in Caldwell Co.  Like those before him, he was a farmer and had a wife and two children.

The family appeared in both the 1920 and 1930 Watauga Co. census at Blowing Rock.  His death in August, 1963 at age 71 was ruled a suicide by "asphyxiation, drowning."  Reason for suicide is not known but "depression" was cited as contributing to his death.

He and Marion had nice children together, all born in Watauga Co.:

Homer Leon, born Jun. 29, 1913, married Polly Ersal Presnell, born Jan. 22, 1916.

Thelma Edna, born Feb. 28, 1915, died May 26, 1995 in Hickory Twp., Catawba Co.  Thelma married Odell Cletus Deal, a son of Nathan T. and Mary Elvira Shell.  He was born Jan. 2, 1904 in Catawba Co., and died there on Jan. 6, 1989.  Odell's first wife was Constance Eliza Chester, born 1908, died 1957 in Catawba Co.  He and Thelma were married in 1959 in Caldwell Co.  Thelma was a US Navy veteran of WWII.  Her military headstone marker reads S1 [Seaman First Class] US Navy, World War II.  What an adventure she must have had!  She had no known children.

Arthur Wade, born Jun. 29, 1917, married Dec. 20, 1945 to Annie Elizabeth Cohn, born Sep. 8, 1917, died Dec. 28, 2000 in Boone.

Ida Irene, born Feb. 23, 1919, married Vernon Stokes Woods, born Jan. 27, 1918 in NC, died Oct. 12, 196 in Mecklenburg Co., NC.  They were married Nov. 27, 1944 in Watauga Co.

Jewel Salome, born c1920, married Max R. Moody.  Max was born Mar. 25, 1919 in Watauga Co. and died there on Mar. 31, 2006.

Marion Helen, born Jun. 16, 1924, married Conor Jones Triplett on Sep. 14, 1946 in Watauga Co.  He died in June, 1976.

Rena Marie, born Jun. 21, 1926, married Ralph Junior Broyhill on Jan. 26, 1946 in Watauga Co.

Waymon Wayne, born Jan. 7, 1929 - no information.

Stanley Owen, born Apr. 26, 1931, died Oct. 4, 2005 in Blowing Rock.  Stanley married Betty Moody.

Some of the birth years for these folks were found in the 1900 census.  In many cases when a corresponding death certificate was found the birth year was +/- 1 year off the census record.  This also occurs many times when viewing WW1 draft records.  The birth year is nearly always off by +/- 1 year from headstone, census or death certificate dates.  It is a phenomena that I have noticed many times and often wondered which is the most accurate?

Clarence was born Oct. 21, 1890 in Jaqua, CO, and died Mar. 2, 1948 in Los Angeles Co., CA.

There were at least 9 children born to Clarence and Rose Etta:

John Calvin Coffey (1848-1930)

John Calvin Coffey was the sixth child and fourth son born to Welborn and Sarah Cottrell Coffey. He was born Apr. 30, 1848. 1 He married Nancy Caroline Tuttle, born Jan. 10, 1854 in Caldwell Co., but I have been unable to find a marriage date. Their first son, Horace Grayson Coffey was born in Dec., 1886, so they probably married in late 1885 or early 1886. John died in Caldwell Co. on Feb. 27, 1930, and Nancy died there on Mar. 10, 1939.

The children born after Horace were:

- Nora E., born c1874 Caldwell Co., married James Laxton
- W. Lemuel, born c1879 Caldwell Co., married 1) Fauna Lamberth; 2) Mamie Neff
- Ida V., born Oct. 1881 Caldwell Co., married David Glass
- Davis Finley, born Oct. 3, 1883 2 Caldwell Co., married Rose Amanda Grant
- Bessie M., no info
- Rufus Anson, born Jul 21, 1888 3 Caldwell Co., married Beatrice Chloe Moore
- John Ross, born May 1890 Caldwell Co., married Mary Woods
- Wellborn Cary, born Oct. 5, 1892 4 Caldwell Co., married Jennie Woods
- Clarence T., born Dec., 1895, Caldwell Co., married Nancy Caroline Tuttle

Horace left Caldwell Co. before 1900, and headed west. He was found in Whitman Co., WA in the 1900 census. By 1902 he was married to Brintie Wilkie. In 1910 they were still in Whitman Co., and the parents of two children: Albert, born c1907, and La Verne, born c1908. Horace registered for the WW1 draft in Colfax, Whitman Co. on Sep. 12, 1918. He was a farmer living at Colfax and was 41-yrs old. He listed his two sons as his nearest relatives. Horace was described as being tall with slender build, blue eyes and sandy colored hair. I have not found Horace in any later census records, but he is said to have married a second time to Pearl Jaynes. Their children are unknown to me.

[Aug. 17, 2009]  Brintie is buried in the Hay Cemetery in Whitman Co., WA.  Horace's gravesite has not been discovered yet.

Davis followed Horace westward. The first record that I find for him is the Mar., 1912 5 marriage to Rose Amanda Grant in Ritzville, Adams Co., WA. They remained in Adams Co. through the 1920 census, but in 1920 were in Yakima Co. Davis died on Dec. 17, 1970 in Klickitat Co. 6 Rose died Apr. 24, 1972 7 in Spokane Co., WA. Together they had at least eight children: Helen, born c1913; Vera Pearl, born Jan., 1915; Byron W., born c1917; Ralph Calvin, born Nov., 1918; Gladys, born c1921; Edith, born c1923; Robert, born c1925, and Barbara, born c1929.

I have limited information on the remainder of the children. Please contact me if anyone needs more information, or can add to or correct any of the above.
