Personal opinion follows:
Dick Eastman's recent blog about expensive genealogy conferences are exactly why Coffey Cousins' do not hold their annual reunions at convention centers, or hotels that charge outrageous fees for parking, a bottle of water or a cold muffin.
A couple of years ago one of our Coffey Cousins attempted to lure us into a large convention center in Virginia for the 2008 reunion. When cost per individual was determined, the proposal was rejected out of hand.
With the welcome assistance of a couple of ladies in the area of Virginia where we wanted to convene, and with the help of some very nice management folks at the Days Inn, we pulled off a successful reunion. Hopefully, none of our cousins went home believing they had been overcharged for their rooms. The free continental breakfast every morning was filling, and there was no charge for parking. The conference room and dining room provided by Days Inn was also free for our use.
Something that Dick didn't mention - or I overlooked it if he did - that adds to the expense of attending one of the national conferences, are the huge fees charged by speakers. I'm fairly certain that some of those speakers make it a business traveling from one conference to another, and charging most of their expenses back to the taxpayer each April 15. Nothing wrong with that of course; I very much favor small business. But I can find a better use for my research money.
I'm not really sure who attends the national conventions. There seems to be maybe a half dozen or so a year, maybe more. I have never been to one. Perhaps one of these days I will, if for no other reason than to visit the vendor displays.
My belief is that most genealogists in the US are family historians who can figure out how to use library resources. We probably already know what records are available on our ancestors. I have seen some very nice published research by what the professionals might call "non certified" researchers.
Call me cynical, but what I can't learn on my own, is stuff that I'm not willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for someone to tell me about.

Coffeytown and 2008 Coffey Cousins' Reunion
For readers who plan to attend the 2008 Coffey Cousins' Reunion, and are wondering what Coffeytown is all about, click on the Coffeytown "search also" label below. That will bring up all previous blog entries for that area, and provide a pretty good review of the area and the families that lived there.
Please contact me with any questions you might have about the reunion or the area and I'll see if I can find the answer. My e-mail address is above.

Coffey Cousins' 2008 Reunion Update
- If you are a subscriber to the Coffey Cousins' printed newsletter you will have read that the tour to Coffeytown will leave the hotel on Friday morning. That is an error. The trip to Coffeytown is on Saturday morning, time to be announced.
- I have contacted a caterer and am making arrangements for the banquet and box lunches. The hotel does not provide breakfast, but the caterer tells me that a truck stop very near the hotel serves a great breakfast. Locals often go there for their meals.
- If you have been holding off on submitting your menu choices, please fill it out and mail it to me. I will need an accurate head count very soon.
- Everyone is encouraged to bring a small and inexpensive item to be used as a door prize. Whatever you bring should not cost more than a couple of bucks.

Recent Updates at Coffey Cousins'
I recently updated the Edward Coffey Project. Those files can be viewed here.
Reams Goodloe also forwarded his most recent index to the Coffey Cousins' newsletter. It is complete through issue 107 and can be seen here.
The index is a VERY large file and will take a couple of minutes to download; longer over a dial-up connection.
If you find something of interest in the index, you can order back issues of the newsletter from editor Bonnie Culley at bculey@embarqmail.com. At the end of each line in the index are two numbers. The first represents the volume number, the second is the page number. You will need these numbers to order the copies.
If you just want to browse the new Coffey Cousins' website, click on the link at the bottom of this page.

Personal Comments
Coffey Cousins' at Rootsweb is gone!
All links in blogs created before about May 2007 that refer to the Coffey Cousins' website became invalid when I moved the website from Rootsweb to its own domain. Clicking here will take you to the "new" Coffey Cousins' website. From there, readers can search the site for items of interest.
There is also a link to the new website at the bottom of each blog.
I update the Edward Coffey web pages two to three times a year. If corrections or additions are reported I immediately make the changes in my files but not on the website. In some rare instances I have made individual corrections to the website when someone requests that personal information be removed, or in cases of gross errors.
Grammar, spelling, etc:
Like most people who do "things," I make mistakes. Spelling errors, misplaced commas, and poor grammar seem to be the "major" difficulties I have in putting together a readable blog. The notes that I receive from English tutors are appreciated, but it's unlikely that after nearly 50 years since my last English class and of "writing like I talk," anyone will be able to change me. Nearly all of my previous writings had the benefit of an editor so placement of commas, etc. wasn't a big concern to me.
Often a few readers will inform me that I have misspelled someones given name. One of the most popular reports is Saphronia. I think we all know that the name can be found spelled different ways in various records for the same person, Sophronia and Fronia being two of the most popular. If readers have a document; e.g., birth or death certificate I certainly want to spell the name as found in that document, and appreciate the notice. However, I'm not likely to change anything without a strong source from a few "nit pickers."
On the other hand, I do appreciate the reports of factual errors. I try to be extremely careful in the accurate recording of the birth, death, and marriage data for each family. Occasionally, or perhaps more often, I mis-type or have inaccurate information. Please continue to correct me when more accurate information is available.
A note about sources:
I generally have sources for most of the information I use here. However, there are some data for which I have no source other than "traditional." I always invite readers with sources that contradicts any of my information to contact me. I sometime include sources in the blog, but mostly do not. I will, when available, share sources with anyone. My goal of course is to share the most accurate information that I can and, to avoid establishing something permanent on the web that will create consternation and confusion to future researchers.
Corrections to the blog are easily made, so feel free to let me know when more accurate is available.
Help!
I often struggle to find ideas for a blog subject. Readers are invited to send requests. If I have information on that particular family I will post it here.
Be Nice!
Everyone is fervent in their research, and believes that the information they have is the most accurate available. I believe that all of us know that even Bible records can be incorrect. Public records such as birth and death certificates can be incorrect as well. Please be nice when writing to discuss whether or not a date or other information that I have is accurate. I respond better to nice rather than confrontational e-mail.

2008 Coffey Cousins' Reunion
Here it is!
The 2008 Coffey Cousins' Reunion will be held May 2-4, 2008 at Raphine in Rockbridge Co., VA. Headquarters for the event will be the Days Inn* at Raphine. Thirty rooms have been set aside and include smoking as well as non-smoking rooms. Cost per day for each room is $64.95 plus tax. Please contact the Days Inn reservations desk at 540-377-2604.
Be sure to let the clerk know that you are attending the Coffey Cousins' Reunion.
Because this area of VA is rife with Coffey descendants, and many likely to attend from NC as well, we recommend that you make and confirm reservations early to assure a room. The hotel has only 80 rooms and we are the first to book for that time of the year.
You must make reservations prior to Apr. 15, 2008.
We are currently working on a menu with the hotel restaurant for the Saturday night group dinner and meeting. At the moment we anticipate the price of each meal to be around $15.00 plus tax. We are also planning a convoy of private automobiles to Coffeytown where we will be given an overview of area settlers. There are no restaurants local to Coffeytown so we are making arrangements for sack lunches and drinks to be prepared by the hotel restaurant. We anticipate the lunch to be sandwich style with chips, drinks, etc. and the cost to be about $8.00 plus tax.
Additional details will appear here as they are finalized.
*For those of you who might have read the earlier announcement of the meeting at The Natual Bridge Inn, I can only say that the hotel was apparently sold during our negotiations with them. We had a contract but it was incorrect (dates, number of rooms, etc). We were promised a revised contract but it never arrived. Our contact person there has not returned calls.

Search Engines and Old Coffey Cousins' Links
The statistics service that I use to monitor the number of readers and how they got to this blog gives me some simple stuff like how the visitor found the blog, how long they stayed, how many pages they read, which page they read first and which page they read last.
One thing that I have noticed: Those who use Google, Yahoo or other search engines to find this blog is many just read for a few seconds and and leave, not finding what they want. Had they read a bit further, or perhaps used the search engine found on every blog page they would likely have found exactly what they were looking for!
If you are one of those who hasn't been able to find the information you want, look at the right side of this screen. There you will find a small blog search window. Enter one or two words that interest you and, all blogs will be searched.
For example, suppose you enter "Coffeytown" in the search block and hit enter. Every Coffey Call blog that mentions Coffeytown will be displayed, one after another. The newest blog will be at the top, the earliest at the bottom. Quotes are necessary.
The first page will display a small framed box at the top of the first return that reads "Show all posts." Do not click on that! It will just take you back to the most current blog. I have no idea why it's there!
I have been writing this blog since Dec., 2004. Many of them contain links to the OLD Coffey Cousins' website at Rootsweb.
Those links are no longer valid.
Instead of clicking on one of those links, visit and bookmark the new website. A search engine has been included on the new site that will help you find what you need. If not, contact me for help.

2008 Coffey Cousins' Convention
UPDATE: Due to hotel scheduling conflicts, the 2008 Reunion will be held at The Natural Bridge Inn near Lexington, VA on May 2-4, 2008. This is one week later than normal, but is the earliest we could book sufficient rooms for our meeting.
As more details become available they will be published here, as well as on the Coffey Cousins' website. They will also be printed in the Dec., 2007 and Mar., 2008 Coffey Cousins' newsletters.
Where will you be on the last full weekend in April, 2008? Hopefully you will be attending the Coffey Cousins' Convention to be held in Lexington, VA.
The actual dates are (check in) April 24, 2008 through (depart) Apr. 27, 2008. Come early or stay late and see this magnificant area in one of the most significant states in the lives of our Coffey ancestors. There are likely more Coffey families in this area than in any place else in the United States.
Think about this historical area! Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson walked in this area. Both Lee and Jackson are buried at Lexington. The Lee Chapel and Museum, Stonewall Jackson home, Virginia Military Institute (VMI), The George C. Marshall museum, Hunter's Rain Civil War Trail, and Washington and Lee University are all places you should see.
I will write more about this convention as details become clearer. In the meantime, visit The Historic Rockbridge website and ask for a copy of their visitor's guide. It's an impressive booklet, and does much more justice describing the area than I can here.

Coffey Cousins' Convention Photographs
2007I have added photographs of the 2007 Coffey Cousins' Convention to the Coffey Cousins website. This year the convention was held in Dubuque, IA. I have not yet labeled the pix, so if you see someone you do not recognize, send e-mail and I'll see what I can do to ID them.
The first seven photographs were taken at the Rustic Barn RV campground in Keiler, WI where my wife and I camped while attending the Convention. Keiler is about 8 miles east of Dubuque. We travel with our long time friend and companion, Freddie, an 11-year old American Brittany. Most hotels do not accept pets and we refuse to leave him in a kennel, so we bought him a big, motorized dog house which he allows us drive for him.
The next 28 shots were taken in Dubuque while on a tour of the city. The remainder are random shots of Coffey researchers, some ejoying the "goodies" baked by my wife, and some of the other ladies. Some folks were just resting while others were working. Several are displaying the door prizes they won at the Saturday night dinner.

Coffey Cousins Clearinghouse Website
The existing Coffey Cousins' website which is now accessed via Rootsweb servers is being moved to dedicated servers with the new Coffey Cousins' domain name thecoffeycousins.org.
Most files have been moved over and I have tested some of the links. Everything seems to be working OK! However, as the saying goes about not being able to see the forest for the trees, I have probably missed a lot of unintentional errors. I would really appreciate it if readers would visit the new site to look for dead links, or links that lead to some page other than the one intended.
Check out the various genealogies to make sure you can get to any part of those files that exhibit links.
Click here, or on the title link to reach the new site.
E-mail me with your results.
Thanks!

Edward Coffey Project
I have updated the files on the Edward Coffey Project website. Click on the title link to view them.
The update represents all information that I have added since the March 2006 update, and is current as of Feb. 1, 2007.
Corrections and additions can be submitted to me from the website by using the e-mail link, or from here using this link.
Remember that the information is what I believe is accurate, and have found in various sources. I do not guarantee it to be 100% accurate. Sources cited should be personally checked by everyone before adding my date to their files. Some information is not sourced but is widely believed to be accurate. Researchers should use the information only as a guide.
The time and effort that I - not to mention all of the other researchers who have submitted information - is costly and time consuming. I am proud of the amount of information that I have added to this project and would appreciate credit in any form that someone might use it.
The information is available on CD via USPS for $5.00 plus $2.00 shipping and handling. It will also be available on CD at the 2007 Coffey Cousins' Convention in Iowa. Use the address on the website to order a CD.

Announcements!
I have just updated the index to the Coffey Cousins' newsletter. This indexes all issues of the newsletter from issue 1 through 102.
Subscribers to the Coffey Cousins' newsletter are no doubt wondering where their June issue is. My wife and I keep in close contact with editor Bonnie Culley and her husband, Jim. Jim is still recovering from a fall and subsequent hip replacement this past winter. Additionally, he is scheduled to have knee replacement within the next week or so.
On top of all of that, they are in the process of preparing to sell their home of around 50 years. They will soon close on a new home without so many stairways for them to navigate.
So, please be patient. Bonnie assures me that she is working on the newsletter as time permits, but will likely be late July, or early August before it is mailed.

Edward Coffey Books and Photos Available
Update Sep. 11, 2008: This offer no longer valid. See blog side bar for offer of CD.
Jack
I have created an Adobe PDF book on CD from my Edward Coffey files. The book is 827 pages, includes all sources and is fully indexed. Also included on this CD are all of the photographs that appear in the book, except that they are larger and can be saved to your hard drive. Users of this CD will have to have the free Adobe reader . Just insert the disk into the CD-ROM drive and access it through the file explorer. Double click on the file name to open it.
Also, I have created a Roots Magic book on CD that looks exactly like the pages that users view when they click on the Edward Coffey link on the Coffey Cousins' website. This file is up to date as of yesterday, June 22, 2006. This is a self-starting CD so users will have to have their CD-ROM drive set to "autoplay."
With this CD users can copy the files to their hard drive and, if using Roots Magic, access them with that program. The files are "read only" when moved from CD to HD, but that can be easily changed and the files can be edited.
If a GEDCOM is preferred over the Roots Magic files, I can do that as well. However, users should be aware that some data stored in a GEDCOM created by Roots Magic may not be properly moved over into a program such as Family Tree Maker. There's nothing wrong with either program; it's just that most genealogy programs do not place the same information in the same places in each of their programs. A Roots Magic or Family Tree Maker GEDCOM might have a field or two that the other does not have, so information in those fields may not move over to the new program.
Caveat Emptor!
I will ship postage paid any of these CDs to US addresses only for $15 each, or two for $25. I will have to check postage for orders from outside the US.
There's a lot of work in these two resources, and well worth the cost.
Questions and/or orders can be sent to me here:
Note: Price per CD is now $7.50 for materials and postage.
