Thomas Jefferson and Robert Lee Coffey

Among the 11 children of Stanton P. and Mary C. Saufley Coffey, were sons, Robert Lee and Thomas Jefferson "Stonewall" Coffey.

Both sons appear to have been born on 20 Sep 1866 in Denmark, Russell Co., KY.  Thomas died on 28 Dec 1945 in Kansas while Robert died 14 Apr 1948 in Clarksdale, DeKalb Co., MO. Thomas is buried at Belle Plaine Cemetery in Sumner Co., KS. Robert was buried at Thornton Cemetery in Clarksdale.

Thomas married Mattie Payne on 28 Apr 1897 in Jamestown, Russell Co., KY.

Robert married Mary Jane Stone Dec 25, 1890.  Thomas is referred to as "his twin" in the obituary. An obituary for him has not yet been found.

My question for researchers of this family line is: Were Thomas and Robert actually twins?

The oldest son of Stanton and Mary was Harry or Harvey Crittendon Coffey who married Martha Jane Bledsoe on 10 Feb 1870 in Russell Co.  I have one child, William Stanton Coffey, born 25 Feb 1872, died 23 Dec 1951 in Green Co., KY.  I am still searching for both Harry (Harvey) and Martha Jane's death dates and burial sites and Harry's real given name.

The third child and second daughter, sister to Thomas, Robert and Harry was A. Jane Coffey, born 1 Dec 1855 in Russell Co.  Did she die young or live to marry and raise a family of her own?  I am still searching for her death date and burial site.

Any help or suggestions appreciated!

In response to this Blog, Kevin Coffey has forwarded several photos and other documents. He agrees and the photo below seems to confirm that Robert Lee and Thomas Jackson were indeed twins.  After some time to review other information provided by Kevin I will post additional updates as needed.

Thanks to Kevin!!

Elias "Eli" Coffey (1775-1833)

Elias Coffey
Will & Probate
This Elias "Eli" Coffey is said to be a son of Salathiel and Elizabeth Gore Coffey,  Salathiel is said to be a son of the thus far mythical Chesley and Jane Cleveland Coffey.

According to one researcher, Eli was born on May 8, 1775 in Wilkes Co., NC.  We know from Green Co., KY marriage records he married Mary "Polly" Coffey, a first cousin and daughter of his uncle Nathan Coffey and wife Mary Saunders, the marriage having occurred on Mar. 22, 1801 in that county.

Eli and Mary had at least 12 children, all born in KY, some in Logan Co. and, some in Adair and Russell Counties.  There are a few we do not yet have an exact place of birth but suspect some of their older children were born in Greene Co.[1]

Eli died in Russell Co., KY in Jul., 1833, leaving a will dated Nov. 10, 1832.[2]

"In the name of God amen.  I Eli Coffey of Russell county and State of Kentucky, calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and knowing that all men have got to die to [sic] make this my last will and Testament in the following manner and form

"My will and desire is that all of my property such as are land and stock of all description and house furniture and farming interests to belong to my wife Poly Coffey during her natural life and at her death an equal distribution to be made of all my property of any kind among my children  My will and desire is that as my sons come of age for my wife to give them one horse briale [sic] [bridle] and saddle apiece and I appoint Acillis [sic] Coffey my sole execution of this my last will and testament  In witness where of I herewite [sic] set my hand and seal this 10th day of November 1832"

Eli signed with his mark.

Nebuzaradan Coffey and William Payne were witnesses.

By the time the will was probated on Dec. 9, 1833 at Jamestown, the witness Nebuzaradan was deceased.  A person who appears to be Will F. Patterson made his testimony that the signature of the deceased Nebuzaradan was genuine.

I do not know who this Nebuzaradan was.  Salathiel and Elizabeth are not known to have had a son by that name.  But, then we do not know with any certainty how many children they did have and all of their names.  The same researcher mentioned in paragraph 2, above, tells me Salathiel died intestate and his wife was named administratrix of his estate.  No children were named in the paperwork that followed.  Later, the wife and children moved to Adair Co., to what was then Green Co., KY, about 1799-1801.  Some of the children later migrated into the Illinois territory.

I am aware of at least three men named Nebuzaradan Coffey.  The first is said to be a son of Joel Coffey and Martha Stepp, Joel being another son of Chesley and brother to Salathial.  This is the Nebuzaradan, said to have been born in 1789, died in 1867 at Marion Co., OR.  His wife was Elizabeth Easley.[3]

The next I know of was born in Jun., 1831 to Willis and Violetta "Lotty" Haynes Coffey of Russell Co., KY.  This Nebuzaradan married Anna Leach "Annie" Baxter on Apr. 8, 1868 in Buchanan Co., MO.  Annie was born to Joseph and Frances George Baxter in MO in Sep., 1844.  She died in Denver Co., CO in 1934.  Her spouse preceded her in death in 1901.  Both are buried in the Fairmont Cemetery in Denver.  They were parents of at least seven children, all but one born in MO.  The last, Hattie, was born in CO.

And finally, the third Nebuzaradan was born c1757[4] in Albemarle Co., VA to Chesley and Jane Cleveland Coffey.  I believe earlier researchers more or less assigned some children to Chesley based on time and place.  I have not seen any documentation which confirms Chesley existed, much less had certain named children.

In any event, by tradition, Nebuzaradan moved to Madison Co., KY c1794[5].  He made his will in Madison Co. on Oct. 1, 1796 and was probated on Mar. 7, 1797.[6]  Again by tradition, his wife was Elizabeth Hayes, born c1760, died c1830.  A marriage record has not been found.

So, who was the Nebuzaradan Coffey who witnessed the will of Elias "Eli" Coffey?

He removed to Illinois in 1831, and came to Oregon in 1847. He died at his home in Marion County on the 20th of January, 1867, leaving his wife, who with him, had borne the vicissitudes of 57 years on the frontier." The Works of Hubert Howe Bancroft, Vox. [4] Birth year could have been earlier.  If his son was the Joel who married Jane Coffey in Wilkes Co., NC on Aug. 22, 1793, then Nebuzaradon was born earlier than 1780.  First name could be Isaac as suggested in the Coffey Cousins' Clearinghouse newsletter of March 1997 by Donna McDonald of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  She also suggested he was born in Wilkes Co., NC.  Birth year must have been earlier.  If 1757 is close to accurate, he was 13 yrs. old when he married Elizabeth, who if born in 1760 would have been ten years old at her marriage!  It's rather obvious their birth and/or marriage dates of way off.

John Lloyd & Pauline Hoffa Coffey

John Lloyd Coffey was a son of James Daniel and Lou Anna "Annie" Payne Coffey. He was born Oct. 15, 1906 in Indiana, probably Owen Co. He married Pauline Hoffa on May 25, 1929 in that county. She was born Apr. 23, 1911 in Cunot, Owen Co., and died 2001 in Owensburg, Daviess Co., KY. Lloyd died in Indiana in 1954 and both are buried at the Cloverdale Cemetery, Putnam Co., IN.

Obituary, Banner Graphic, Greencastle, Putnam Co., IN

Pauline Coffey, 89, Owensboro, Ky. and Stuart, Fla., died Thursday at Wellington Parc, Owensboro.

Born in Cloverdale, she was the daughter of Henry Hoffa and Nellie Zenor Hoffa.

She had retired as an administrative assistant at IBM Corp. in Greencastle, and was a member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Barnard, Owensboro; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lloyd Coffey.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at James H. Davis Funeral Home Chapel, Owensboro.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Cloverdale Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home.

Given the recent insulting remarks about conservative Americans by James Hoffa, current "president" of the Teamsters unions, and son of the convicted union thug James Riddle Hoffa, I thought it might be interesting to find out how Pauline Hoffa Coffey might be related to that family.

Pauline was a daughter of Henry and Nellie L. Zenor Hoffa.  Henry was a son of Isaac R. & Nancy Parthenia Turner Hoffa.  Isaac was a son of John and Ann Hoffa.  Jacob Hoffa was an older brother to Isaac and married a lady by the name of Nancy J. c1871 in IN.  One of their children was John Cleveland Hoffa who married Viola Riddle.  Their son was James "Jimmy" Riddle Hoffa. Pauline and Jimmy were therefore second cousins.

Except for John Hoffa who was born c1818 in PA, all the others were natives of Indiana.

Forgot to mention that Lloyd Coffey is in the Chesley Coffey line.

William Jackson & Pauline Myrtle Logan Coffey

William Jackson Coffey
Pauline Myrtle Logan Coffey
William is the son of Thomas Jackson "Stonewall" and Mattie Payne Coffey. They are all part of the Coffey/Saufley/Payne/Tartar/Logan families that I've been writing about in the last few blogs.

Thomas was the son of Stanton P. and Mary C. Saufley Coffey.  Stanton descends from Eli and Mary "Polly" Coffey Coffey.  They all descend from the so-far unproven Chesley and Jane Cleveland Coffey through Salathiel and Elizabeth Gore Coffey.  These families migrated out of NC to KY in the late 1700 to early 1800 time frame.  Some settled in Green Co. before moving on to Russell Co., and then to KS.  Mattie Payne was born in Russell Co. in 1866 to William Pigg and Mary Jane Tarter Payne.

William married Pauline c1925 in KS.  Information on some of her family can be found in the last few blogs.  Kevin Coffey of Franklin, TN tells me that his grandmother was quite tall for her era - something close to 5' 10" - and played basketball for her high school in Mulvane, Sumner Co., KS.  She once set a state record for consecutive free throws without a miss.

Kevin also included this photo of Pauline with the rest of her team from 1921.

Please drop me a note if you recognize any of the other ladies.

Thomas Coffey and Sarah Stokes

Marvin Coffey included Thomas and Sarah in his work on James Bluefield Coffey as a possible child of Reuben and Sarah "Sally" Scott Coffey.  He recognized that there was not complete agreement among Edward Coffey researchers that the children of Reuben and Sallly as listed in his work was accurate.

Recently, Sue Ikerd wrote to me that Thomas who married Sarah Stokes was actually Thomas Caffey, a descendant of Michael and Margaret Flowers Caffey.  Her contention was backed up with the following reasoning:

  • Thomas's parents were born father Maryland, mother North Carolina, name usually spelled Caffey; named son Michael.
  • Michael was born in Maryland; name usually spelled Caffey.
  • Thomas's wife's mother was a Chilcuitt from Maryland.
  • Hooper Caffey, grandson of Michael, married a Chilcuitt.
  • John Stokes who married Jane Guerrin, was a brother of Sarah Stokes, wife of Thomas Caffey.
  • Hooper Caffey was Bondsman for John Stokes and Jane Gerrin 1814.
  • Thomas incurred debt to James Walker 1817 in Rockingham Co. NC (I have an original paper with this info and dates). Old family letter states family came to
  • Tennessee in 1824 from North Carolina.
  • Thomas lived in Guildford Co. North Carolina in 1821; appointed Brother-in-law James to recover the inheritance from deceased mother of Rockingham Co. NC.
  • Stokes, Caffey's, McElroy's, Flacks, Patricks, Averetts, all lived in the same general area in Guilford Co. NC and are all connected by marriage. The June 23, 1804 will of Michael Caffey, probated Nov. 1810 in Rockingham Co.
  • NC, lists wife Margaret, sons Michael, Robert, Thomas, John, and daughters Sophia, Mary, and Margaret.
  • Executors were Wife Margaret and son John Witnesses were W. Payne, Waiter Good, and Charity Payne.

This information will not be updated in the on-line version of the Edward Coffey Project for reasons cited in previous blogs.  However, I will include this information in my master file and will be available on the Edward Coffey Project CD.  It has also been forwarded to Bonnie Culley for inclusion in her quarterly Coffey Cousins' Newsletter.

Coffey-Portwood Family

This is another Coffey family photograph provided by Kevin Coffey of Franklin, TN.

Prior to her marriage to Thomas Jackson (Stonewall) Coffey, Mattie Payne had been married to and had a number of children by William Bruce Portwood.

William was born in Mississippi on Oct. 9, 1865 and died in Texas on Sep. 3, 1893. They were married in Texas on Oct. 15, 1890

After William died, Mattie returned to Russell Co., KY where she met and married Thomas c1897.

This photo shows Thomas on the left of the steps and Mattie on the right. Others in the photo are unidentified children and grandchildren from both of Mattie's marriages.
