Herbert G. Chumbley

Herbert & Myrtle Coffey Chumbley
(Thought to be their wedding photo*)
Herbert was the oldest child and son of William and Julia Catherine Lester Chumbley of Pulaski Co., KY.  He was born in Nancy, KY on Dec. 16, 1893 and died on Mar. 5, 1920 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY.

Herbert grew up in Pulaski Co., and on Jun. 5, 1917 registered there for the WW1 draft.  He subsequently served with Battery E., 124th Field Artillery of the US Army.

In Oct. 1919 he married Myrtle "Myrtie" Coffey, the second of four daughters born to Tolbert Nelson and Sarah Roberts Coffey.  She would be my sixth cousin.

Myrtie was born c1902 and perhaps in Whitley Co., KY.  Her sisters were Martha, born in 1899; Minnie J., born in 1904 and Lora, born 1907.  Tolbert died in 1907 and in 1914, Sarah married Andrew Cader Worley.

Herbert and Myrtie were married in Oct., 1919.  In Jan, 1920 they were "lodgers" in the Columbus Mining Camp at Hazard in Perry Co., KY.  The head of household was Fred Stephens and his wife, Shirley Ethel Chumbley Stephens, sister to Herbert.

Herbert and Myrtie relocated to Whitley Co. in Fed. 1920 where Herbert took a job in another coal mine.  Ten days later, on Mar. 5, 1920, he suffered second degree burns in a mine explosion.  His death certificate reports that he had been a resident of Whitley for 10 days; a resident of Kentucky for 21 years. He was rushed to the Louisville Jewish Hospital where he died.

Herbert Chumbley Death Certificate
Herbert was laid to rest at the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy on Mar. 6, 1920.

There were no known children born to Herbert and Myrtie.

She is reported* to have married John Calvin Williams in about 1923 but I have not yet found a marriage record.  She and John moved to Ohio where he worked in various machine shops.  They appeared there in the 1930 and 1940 census with a son, Herschel, born c1924 in KY.

John died in 1968 and Winfield in Scott Co., TN but Myrtle was not named as the wife in his obituary.  Myrtle is said to have died in Cincinnati, OH in 1961 but I have found no documentation or record of her burial.

Titian J. Coffey Death Notice

"The marriage of Miss Evelyn Chew, granddaughter of Mrs. Titian J. Coffey, to Mr. Thomas Roberts, jr., of Philadelphia, took place yesterday [Dec. 6, 1911] afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the home of her grandmother, in K Street.  Only a small family party was present at the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. Roland Cotton Smith, of St. John's Episcopal Church, assisted by Rev. Dewees Roberts, of Boston, brother of the bridegroom.

"The house was a mass of Bride roses, palms, and ferns, placed so thickly about the house they seemed to be growing out of the walls.  A string orchestra played the wedding music.  The bride was escorted and given in marriage by her father, Mr. John Chew.  She wore a handsome gown of ivory satin, made with a Dutch neck and trimmed with rare old family lace, and a little passementerie of pearls.  The skirt had a long square court train.  The bridal veil was of tulle edged with lace and held in place with a cap effect and bunches of orange blossoms.  A shower bouquet of lillies of the valley completed the costume.

"Mrs. J. Upshur Moorhead, sister of the bride, was matron of honor.  She wore a dainty gown of pale pink satin with tunic drapery of pale blue chiffon, the drapery bordered with a wide band of opalescent beadwork.  In her hair she wore a bandeau of gold and she carried a cluster of pink roses and lillies of the valley.  Mr. George Roberts, of Philadelphia, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.

"A number of intimate friends were asked for the reception which followed the ceremony.  Mrs. Coffey, grandmother of the bride, was gowned in a handsome toilette of black lace over black satin, trimmed with the most exquisite old point lace.  Mrs. Thomas W. Symons, niece of Mrs. Coffey; Mrs. A. Gordon-Cumming, and Miss Fanny Whelan assisted Mrs. Coffey in the drawing-room and dining-room.  Mrs. Coffey received the guests seated in a large armchair.

"Mrs. Marguerite Barbour was hostess at a dinner last evening in honor of her house guests, Miss Samuels, of Philadelphia, and Miss Theresa Kohn, of New Orleans, who arrived in Washington yesterday for the marriage of Miss Evelyn Chew.  They will visit Miss Barbour for several days.

"Miss Alive Vandergrift entertained at a luncheon yesterday in compliment to several out-of-town guests who attended the wedding of Miss Chew and Mrs. Roberts yesterday.

"Among the out-of-town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Roberts, the bridegroom's parents; Mr. and Mrs. George Roberts and their family, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Reath and their family, all of  Philadelphia, and the Rev. Dewess Roberts and Mrs. Roberts, of Boston.  Mr. and Mrs. Roberts left after the reception for a wedding trip in the South, the bride traveling in a tailored suit of rough blue cloth made with a Russian blouse and collar and cuffs of black corded silk, and a smart black velvet hat trimmed with pink and green French roses.  After an extended stay in the South they will make their future home in Philadelphia.

"The bride is identified with the most exclusive resident circles of Washington, known as the 'cave dwellers.'  She was presented to society at the home of Mrs. John R. McLean at a large reception several years ago.  Mrs. Coffey, with whom her granddaughter has always made her home, has been prevented from taking any active part in society in the Capital on account of ill health.  Mrs. Moorhead, the bride's sister, who attended her at the wedding, was a contemporary of Miss Ethel Roosevelt*, the debutante of the last administration, her marriage taking place at the close of her first season.

"The engagement of Miss Chew and Mr. Roberts waas announced early this fall, before the return of Mrs. Coffey and her granddaughter from the Virginia Hot Springs, where they spent the greater part of the summer."

Colby & Sarah Roberts Rucker

In 1927 Edyth Johns Rucker Whitley put together a rather comprehensive account of the Ruckers in American. By her own admission, Edyth did not set out to provide "a complete history of the family" before they began to arrive on the shores of this country.*

She emphatically states that the origin of the Ruckers was "no doubt a very historical family" and was German. She descended into a short description of when the family originated when a "Sir Knight crusader, John Von Rucker, was granted in 1096 AD¹ a coat-of-arms, dating from the first Crusade."
This book is available to read and download at Ancestry.com.  I will borrow only slightly from it in this outline of the family and their intermarriage with the Coffey and Dalton families of Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. I have not relied on it entirely for Colby's descendants; instead I have relied on several contemporaries who have assisted me over the years while I researched my own Coffee/y ancestry.

Edyth tells us that Colby Rucker was a son of Peter and Sarah Rucker of Culpepper Co., VA. She found no exact date of marriage for Peter and Sarah but speculated that it "must have been about 1759." In 1775 Peter sold his land in Virginia and relocated with Sarah and his children to Mississippi. Through an investigative process Edyth speculates that although no official record has been found that provides Sarah's maiden name, she pretty much convinces researchers that her name was Sarah Cowherd, a daughter of Colby Cowherd whose property adjoined the Ruckers in Culpepper Co.

Colby Rucker was born Oct. 10, 1760 and died on Jan. 20, 1852 in Thorn Hill, Grainger Co., TN and was buried there at the Rucker Cemetery. He married Sarah Roberts** c1784 and she died c1844, but we do not know where or, the location of her burial.
They had at least eight children; seven of which are believed born in Wilkes Co., and the last in Grainger Co., TN.

The first was Elizabeth. An un-sourced contribution to Coffey Cousins' tells us that she was born  born Jan. 6, 1787 and died Mar. 22, 1855.  She married John Coffey, a son of Benjamin and Polly Hayes Coffey on Mar. 1, 1804 in Wilkes Co.  It is said that 12 children were born to the union but likely there were only ten.  We have no data on two of them:  Jesse T. and George.

The others were Ausburn (var.) who was born on Jan. 11, 1805 and died on Dec. 30, 1876 in Grainger Co. He was married c1830 to Matilda "Tildy" Dalton, a daughter of Enos and Rebecca Williams Dalton. Tildy was born Jan. 30, 1799 in Grayson Co., VA and died in Rockcastle Co., KY on Jan. 30, 1899. Ausburn is buried at the Rucker Cemetery in Thorn Hill, Grainger Co., while Tilda died in Rockcastle Co. and was buried in Roundstone, KY at the Scaffold Cane Cemetery. Thirteen children.

Colby, born Aug. 23, 1806 in Wilkes Co., died in Estill Co., KY on Jun. 17, 1888. He was married to Mary Ann "Polly" Adams on May 22, 1830 in Grainger Co., TN. She was born Oct. 6, 1807 in VA, died Sep. 26, 1887 in Estill Co. Both buried at Garrett Cemetery in Jinks, Estill Co. Ten children.

Benjamin, born Feb. 8, 1808 in Wilkes Co., died May 8, 1867 in Rockcastle Co. He married Nancy Hayes c1872 in Hawkins Co., TN.  Nancy was born Jul. 23, 1802 in NC and died in Rockcastle Co. on Feb. 14, 1874.  Both are buried at the Maret Cemetery in Wildie, Rockcastle Co. Ten children

Elizabeth was born Oct. 14, 1810 in TN and died in Cass Co., MO on Aug. 30, 1883. Her first husband was Nathan P. Whitsett to whom she was married on Dec. 1, 1839. He died in Jan., 1842 in Grainger Co. and she then married her first cousin, George W. Hayes, a son of Thomas and Sarah "Sally" Rucker Hayes. Sally was the daughter of Colby and Sarah Roberts. The marriage occurred on Feb. 23, 1845 in Grainger Co. Both George and Elizabeth are buried at Pleasant Hill in Cass County's Union Baptist Church Cemetery. At least five children.

Nancy, born Jan. 12, 1811 in Grainger Co., died Nov. 20, 1896 in Rockcastle Co.  She never married and in the 1860 census she was enumerated as "insane."  She is buried at the Thomas Jefferson Coffey cemetery near Lake Linville in Rockcastle Co.

John Jackson, born Jan. 12, 1812 in Hancock Co., TN, died Oct. 15, 1877 in Rockcastle Co. His spouse was Elsie Nash, born 1810 in TN and died in Grainger Co. on Jan. 7, 1867. They were married Jul. 7, 1839 in Grainger Co. He is buried at Maret Cemetery in Wildie; she at the Condry Cemetery in Thorn Hill. Elsie was a daughter of Thomas and Dicy Mallicoat Nash. They also had a son named Marvel Nash who married Louisa Wells. Their daughter, Sarah Nash later married Wiley Coffey, son of Ausburn and Tildy Dalton Coffey. A son, Parrot Leon Nash also married Martha Matilda Coffey, a daughter of Wiley and Sarah Nash Coffey. John Jackson and Elsie had seven children.

The Coffey's loved their cousins!

John and Elizabeth Rucker Coffey's daughter, Sarah Lucinda, born c1822 in Grainger Co., married William E. (or H.) Coffey on Mar. 21, 1840.  William was the son of George and Margaret Rucker Coffey.  Margaret Rucker and Sarah's mother, Elizabeth Rucker were sisters and, John and George Coffey were brothers.  So, Sarah and William were double first cousins!  Sarah and William had seven children.

Margaret Elizabeth Coffey, born Feb. 28, 1823, probably in Grainger Co., married Isaac Bullen on May 9, 1844 in that county.  He was born Apr. 23, 1802 in TN and died in Rockcastle Co. on Nov. 28, 1896.  Margaret also died in Rockcastle Co.  Margaret was Isaac's second wife.  His first wife was Mary Dotson to whom he was married on Nov. 3, 1829 in Grainger Co.  They had five children, one of which (Hannah) married Elias Henry "Eli" Coffey in 1851 Grainger Co.  He was another son of Ausburn and Tildy Dalton Coffey.  Both Margaret and Isaac are buried at the Thomas Jefferson Coffey Cemetery.  Mary Dotson is buried at the Dotson Cemetery in Grainger Co.

Catherine Coffey, born Apr. 29, 1827 in TN, died Sep. 27, 1914 in Howell Co., MO.  She married a Mr. Sweet in Cass Co., MO.  We know that Catherine is buried at the Langston Cemetery in West Plains, Howell Co. MO, but no clues yet on Mr. Sweet.

William M. Coffey, born Oct. 31, 1828 in TN is the last known child of John and Elizabeth Rucker Coffey.  He married Ellen Nash on Jun. 10, 1849 in Rutledge, Grainger Co.  He died on Aug. 9, 1893 in that county; she on Jan. 19,1884.  Unfortunately, I have not yet found where they are buried.

2/16/2015 Update:

The following is from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application made for the Colby's children.  His pension was denied as no proof existed that he actually served:

United States Department of Interior***
Bureau of Pensions
Rev. and 1812 Wars.         Washington, Nov. 6, 1925
Section R-9061

In response to your letter [presumed to be Whitley] of the second instant, I have the honor to advise you, that from the records of this Bureau it appears that Colby, or Colley Rucker was born October 10, 1760, place not stated.  During the Revolution he lived with his parents, whose names are not on record, on the Mississippi River, near Natchez.  He married soon after the Revolution in Wilkes County, North Carolina, date not given, Sarah Roberts.  He died in Grainger County, Tennessee, January 20, 1852.  His wife died about eight years before he died.  In 1852, their surviving children were:

Mrs. Margaret Coffee, aged sixty-five years.
Mrs. Elizabeth Coffee, aged sixty-seven years.
William Rucker, aged sixty-three years.
Mrs. Sarah Hayes, aged sixty-one years.
Mrs. Nancy Pain or Payne, aged fifty-eight years.
Mrs. Delphia Dalton, aged fifty-six years.
John Rucker, aged fifty-four years.
Mrs. Jane Hayes, aged fifty-one years.

On December 27, 1852, William Hays, or Hayes, soldier's administrator, a resident of Rockcastle County, Kentucky, applied for pension in behalf of the surviving children.  He was also soldier's son-in-law, but it is not stated which daughter was his wife.

It is stated that Colby, or Colley Rucker, enlisted in 1778, or 1770 and served under Captain Alston and Colonel Blunt, ranging up and down the Mississippi River near Natchez, for eighteen months.  After this, while going to North Carolina, he was captured by the British and confined in Savannah between four and six months, before he escaped.

He then went to Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he enlisted and served for three months under Captain John Keyes and Colonel Benjamin Harrald and Colonel Charles McDowell against the Cherokees.  Dates of service not given.

The claim was not allowed as soldier did not render six months service, in an embodied military corps as required by the pension laws.

Very truly yours,

Winfield Scott, Commissioner

William Perry Coffey (1857-1926)

Part IV

William's first wife, Jane Helen Wemple passed away sometime between Jun 15, 1880 and Jul. 7, 1882.  She was present in the household at the 1880 census and on that date in 1882 [date unproven], William married her sister, Mary Ellen.

Mary Ellen had been previously married to John J. Roark on Oct. 8, 1876 in Howell Co., MOIn 1880 she was living with her father but Mr. Roark was not in the household and, there were no Roark children in the family. William and wife Jane were enumerated in an adjacent household.

The children born to William and Mary Ellen were as follows:

Vital Record Amendment to Birth
Record for Allene Margruette Coffey (Hart)
Samuel Wemple, born Mar. 25,1883 in Howell Co., died Dec. 28, 1951 in Santa Cruz Co., CA.  His spouse was Etta M. Fritz. [marriage date unknown]  One child was born to this union.  She was Allene Marguerette Coffey, born Nov. 10, 1912 in Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ.  Her name is obscured on the face of the document.  However, an Amendment to Vital Record was found in which personal affidavits by her aunt, Rosa L. Daugherty and cousin, Donald E. Doris in March, 1959, and a Baptism and Confirmation certificate by the Latter Day Saints Church, James W. Challis, Mission President, dated May, 1954 confirms her name and birth date.2  This same document shows the Registrant's name as "Allene Margruette Coffey (Hart)"

Etta may have died at the birth of Allene because in 1930 Sam appeared in the census for Pittsburg, Contra Costa, CA with wife Audrey B., a stepson named Howard Minkler, age 16, born in Oregon and Allene, daughter, age 17, born in Arizona.3  A bit of luck caused me to stumble upon the grave of Martha Jane "Mattie" Millerat Find A Grave.  An obituary and bio on that site told me that she had been previously married to Frank Ransome Minkler.  I believe there is an error in the bio however.  She was likely Frank's first wife, and not his first.  I also discovered that in addition to Howard, Audrey and Frank had a daughter named Audrey, born c1916. She does not appear in the 1930 census with Samuel and Audrey.

Frank Ransome Minkler and Audrey last appeared together as a family in the 1920 census for Eureka, Humboldt Co., CA.

Samuel Coffey died on Dec. 28, 1951 in Santa Cruz Co., CA.  Neither Etta, Audrey nor his burial site is known.

Lula, second child born to William and Mary Ellen, arrived in West Plains on Oct. 16, 1884.  She married George Washington Roberts there on May 22, 1905.  George was born in Caney, Montgomery Co., KS on Dec. 22, 1884 and died in Eureka Humboldt Co., CA on Oct. 20, 1948.  Lula died there on Feb. 11,1955.  Both she and George are thought to have been buried at Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka.  They likely had more children but I know of only three:  Georgia Ellen; Frank Andrew and Gladys Louise.

Minnie followed Lula on Dec. 5, 1887 in West Plains but died there the following August and was buried there, site not known.

The family moved south from Missouri into Arkansas for awhile.  It was there in Newport, Jackson Co. that the fourth child, Rose Etta was born on Jan. 14, 1889.  The family moved on from there into OK where Rose is said to have married Clarence Elwood Woods on Aug. 6, 1911 in Nowata Co. [no marriage record found]  In 1920 she and Clarence were found in Drumright, Creek Co., OK and 1930 in Tulsa, Tulsa Co., OK.  Some genealogies report that Rose was first married to James Cook but, I have found no evidence of that.  She and Woods were divorced and, in the 1940 census, Rose was enumerated as a divorced woman with seven children residing in Eureka, Humboldt Co., CA.  That record shows that she was living in Sand Springs, OK in 1935 and in 1940 worked as a sales lady.  Mr. Woods has not been located in that census and is said to have died in Los Angeles in Mar., 1948.

Their children were:

Elmer Clarence, born Jun 3, 1912 in Coffeyville, Montgomery Co., KS, died there in Apr., 1915. [no locations or confirmed sources]

Glen Walter, work Aug. 9, 1914 in Coffeyville, married Jun. 8, 1940 to Obabel Ingerbretsen.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Grace Margaret, born Aug. 27, 1916 in Drumright, Creek Co., OK.; married Ethridge Strickland on Sep. 1, 2939 and died on Feb. 20, 1987.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Bruce Howard, born Sep. 30, 1919 in Bristow, Creek Co., OK; married Twila Schadawitz in 1943.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Lula Ellen "Bunny," born Jul. 7, 1922 in Bristow; married Howard Divinie on Sep. 12, 1946. [no locations or confirmed sources]

Donald Woodrow, born Jun. 9, 1924 in Bristow, married Margaret Hansen in 1947.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Elizabeth Ruth, born Sep 1, 1926 in Bristow, married Thurman Lanning on Dec. 20, 1952.  I am unsure of the marriage date.  Thurman had been previously married to Irene Alice Kasza in 1942.  She died in Los Angeles, CA on Aug. 19, 1952 and was buried at Glendale, Los Angeles Co. in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in that city.  Thurman died on Jul. 18, 2007 in Springfield, Lane Co., OR; Ruth died earlier on Jul. 27, 2002.  Both are buried at Springfield Memorial Gardens, in Springfield, Lane Co., OR.  Both Thurman and Ruth were Coffey Cousins.

There were two other children born to Clarence and Rose Etta; a son Bernard Vernon, born Jul. 18, 1929 in Bristow and a daughter, Barbara, born c1933 in OK.  [no locations or confirmed sources]

Questions, additions, corrections welcomed!

Tragedy in the life of Hiram Dalton

Hiram Dalton, born Mar. 4, 1843 at Idol in Grainger Co., TN, was a son of Timothy Dalton and Delphia Coffey.  Delphia was the daughter of George and Margaret Rucker Coffey, natives of North Carolina, and Timothy was a son of Reuben and Elizabeth Shockley Dalton, Virginia natives.

In order of birth, Hiram was the seventh of at least 11 children born to Timothy and Delphia. Others were, in order of birth, George Washington, David, Thomas, Ollie or Ally, William Nelson, Green C., [Hiram], Colby Timothy, Manerva, Emeline and Harriet.  A couple of these children were married at least twice but, Hiram seems to have had an abundance of misfortune with his spouses.  He was married at least four times.

His first wife was Catherine Howerton, born c1843, died c1870.  They were married on Nov. 11, 1861[1] in Grainger Co.  Catherine was the mother of at least two children which survived to adulthood: Pleasant "Pleas" Dalton, born Aug. 5, 1865, died Aug. 14, 1942, and Mary Elizabeth Dalton, born c1866, died 1947.

Hiram's second wife was his first cousin, Mahala Jane Dalton, a daughter of Carter J. and Mary A. Coffey Dalton.  Mary was a sister to Delphia, wife of Timothy.  Timothy and Carter J. were likely very close kin but I haven't determined that yet.  This marriage occurred on Jul. 6, 1871 in Grainger Co.[1]

Mahala and Hiram had at least four children:  George, born c1874; Abner B., born 1875, died 1949; Rev. Carter J., born 1876, died 1939 and, Mary Margaret, born 1882, died 1968.

Mahala apparently died at the birth of Mary in 1882 because Hiram took his third wife, the widow Myra Mallicoat on Dec. 24, 1882[1] in Grainger Co.  Myra was about 37 years old when she married Hiram.  I do not know if she bore any children for Hiram but, in 1900 Hancock Co., a son by the name of Farnee or Tarnee, born in Apr., 1888 and then 12 years old, was in the household with Hiram.  In this census Hiram reported that he had been married for six years but a wife was not enumerated.

The excluded wife Hiram claimed to have in the 1900 census was likely C. J. Roberts [given names not found].  They were married on May 14, 1894[1] in Grainger Co.  I have not been able to locate Hiram in the 1910 census.  He died of unknown causes in Hancock Co. on Jun. 14, 1915 and was buried at the Wolfenbarger Cemetery in that county.

Perhaps some of Hiram's poor record with wives was passed along to Pleasant, his son with Catherine Howerton.  Pleas, as he was called, was born on Aug. 5, 1865 in KY and died on Aug. 14, 1942 in Hamblen Co., TN.  He is buried in that county at the Emma Jarnagin Cemetery in Morristown.

Pleas' first wife was Elizabeth "Bettie" Shockley.  They were married in Grainger Co. on Feb. 24, 1888.  She was the mother of at least three children:  Effie, born c880, James Carter, born 1896, died 1958 and, Neil, born c1902.  Bettie died on May 11, 1911 and was laid to rest at Emma Jarnagin.

A little more than a year later, Pleas married Viola Coffey on Aug. 10, 1912 in Grainger Co.  Viola was the daughter of Thomas and Martha Jane Shockley.  Martha Jane was the sister to Elizabeth Shockley, Pleas' first wife.  Their common ancestors were George and Margaret Rucker Coffey, Reuben Dalton and Elizabeth Shockley and Colby and Sarah Roberts Rucker.

Viola was the mother of at least six children: Claude Wilson, Lee Boyd, Lloyd Oliver, Paul Edam, Clifford and P. Henderson, all born between 1913 and 1926 in Hamblen Co.

The life that would eventually turn to tragedy for Pleas and Viola began with the birth of their first child, Claude Wilson.  He married Virgie Newman on Jan. 20, 1940[1] in Hamblen Co.  He was 26 then and perhaps had been previously married, but I find no record.  Neither do I know who their children were, if any.  Claude ended his life by gunshot on Jun.1, 1953[2] and was buried at Emma Jarnagin.

Their next son was Lee Boyd, born Nov. 17, 1917.  Lee died of "infantile paralysis" [known as poliomyelitis or, polio today] at the age of 10.[2]  He was buried at Emma Jarnagin.

Lloyd Oliver was next, born Aug. 30, 1919.  He died on Dec. 11, 1921[2] of burns when his clothing was ignited by the fireplace.

Paul Edam came next, born Feb. 1, 1922.  Paul died at age 12 on Mar. 23, 1934[2] of bronchial pneumonia.

Clifford survived to married Mary Lois Hall on Aug. 16, 1953 in Hamblen Co.  I have not found a death record for him or Mary.

Their last child was P. Henderson (Henderson), born Sep. 30, 1926.  Henderson died of pneumonia on Mar. 28 1939 at age 12.

It appears then that all of their children, with the possible exception of Clifford died before Viola passed on in 1969.  And, most died before Pleas' death in 1942.  All but Clifford are to be found buried at the Emma Jarnagin Cemetery in Morristown.

The Tennessee Daltons and Coffeys have a history of intermarriage.  Other of Hiram's children married into the Coffey family and I have information on those.  Additions and corrections welcomed.  Contact me via e-mail for more info.

James Bert "Jim" Blunt, Jr.

This photo is from my personal family collection.[1]  He is James Bert "Jim" Blunt, Jr., son of Jim, Sr. and his wife Alpha Anne Delafield.  Jim, Jr. was born Oct. 18, 1882 in Sarepta, Webster Parish, LA and died on Aug. 24,1933 in Rush Springs, Grady Co., OK.

He married Miss Isabelle Allison in Rush Springs on Mar. 12, 1911.  She was born Nov. 14, 1892 in Chockie, Atoka Co. OK to Charles Edward and Irene E. Glossup Allison.  She died in Jacksonville, Cherokee Co., TX on May 12, 1967.  Both are buried at Rush Springs Cemetery.

Jim, Jr. was to me both a first cousin, twice removed and, a second cousin, twice removed.  On the Blunt side, he descended from Hugh R. Blunt (1822-1877) and his wife Mary Ann Bishop.  Hugh was also married to Mary Ann's younger sister, Bonita Bishop from whom I descend.  And, we both descend from James R. and Peninah Walker Bishop of Lawrence Co., MS.

My descent from Hugh and Beneta is through their daughter, Amanda (1859-1936).  She married James Monroe Braley and their daughter, Ora (1884-1984) married A. L. Coffee and were my paternal grandparents.

I like this photo for a several reasons.  First, it is large, in focus and without defect (spots, folds, etc.).  Another reason is his clothing.  He is wearing a conventional necktie, white shirt and suit.  His hat sits back on his head, giving full exposure to his face.  It was probably taken in the mid-to-late 1920's.

He is wearing leather wrist cuffs and gloves.  The flashlight, along with his watch and fob must have been prized possessions. I have seen portrait-like period photos in which the men were displaying pistols or rifles but, I have never seen one with the subject holding a flashlight.  The mustache was de rigueur.

Jim, Jr and Isabelle had four children:

Myrtle (1912-1999) who married Verdie Hiram Morris and had children James Vernor and Joyce.

Hazel Relura (1913-1994) who married Clarence David Roberts and had children James Bert and Clarence David.

Clifford Edward "Cliff," (1916-1997) who married Mary Louise Fausett.  No known children.

DeAlva (1928-living) who married Robert Eugene Eitelman (1926-1986).  Four chidlren, three still living.  Their first, James Robert was born Oct. 19, 1947 and died the next day.

Joseph, Jr. & Louvada Martin Coffey

Merry Christmas
Joseph and Louvada were married in Wayne Co., KY in 1902.  He was born there in 1886 to Joseph, Sr. and Louisa J. Jones Coffey.  She was a daughter of James and Sarah Jane Roberts Martin, born Wayne Co. in 1884.  Jr. died c1924 and she in Nov., 1945 and both are buried at the Dobbs Cemetery[1] in Coopersville, Wayne Co.

Louvada and Joseph had at least 9 children but I have only been able to locate a few of them that grew to adulthood.

Roscoe, born 1907, died 1988 at Coopersville.  Married to a lady named Ruby c1933 and had at least two children:  Geraldine, c1834 and, Velta, born c1938.  They are in the 1940 Wayne Co. census.[2]

Frank O., born Jan., 1909, married Sarah Jane Gregory, born c1911, in about 1930.  They had children Anderson, Othal, Stanley Estel and Audrey.  Frank died in 1973 and is buried at Elk Spring Cemetery in Montecello.

Joseph, born Apr., 1911, likely died young as did Elmer, born Feb., 1912 who died on Jun. 1913.  He is buried at Kidd Cemetery in McCreary Co.  Another son, Maynard, born Feb., 1914 also may have died young.  I have found no records for him.

Everett, born 1916, died in Pulaski Co. in 2007.

Inman, born c1919, died in Oct., 1965.

There appears to have been another son named Joseph, born in 1923 but I have not been able to conform that.  The last child I know of was Adina, born in 1925 for whom I have found no info.

Martin-Maher Marriage Record
Louvade had an older brother, Joseph Gilson Martin, born Jul. 2, 1875 in Wayne Co., died in Hampshie Co., MA in 1965.  Joseph left KY when he was a young man, probably in his mid-20's and joined the military.  In 1903 he was a soldier at Fort Ethan Allen in Chittenden Co., VT where he was married on June 6 of that year to Mary Agnes Maher.  They were both 27 years old.

Mary Agnes was fairly consistent in census records, telling us where he father was born.  In 1920 she reported his birth in French Canada.  In 1930 he was said to have been born in English Canada.  She was not as consistent with her mother's birth place.  In 1920 she said her mother was born in NY state and, in 1930 she told us her mother was born in VT.  We can be fairly certain that the father was Canadian and her mother was an American.  After leaving VT, the couple migrated to Northampton in Hampshire Co., MA where they lived for the remainder of their lives.  I have not however, found them in the 1910 census.

Gilson WW1 Draft (front)
Gilson WW1 Draft (rear)
They were in Northampton in Sep. 12, 1918 when Gilson Martin registered for the draft.  He made no mention of his prior service.  He was described as being tall and stout with blue eyes and "bouzs"[3] colored hair.  That year he was a cabinet maker for the Florence Furniture Co. in Florence, MA.  He and Mary lived at 18 Plymouth Ave. in Florence.

In 1920 they lived at 16 Plymouth Ave., and Joseph was a casket maker.  Mary was a spooler in a local silk mill.  In 1930 they lived at 258 West St. in Northampton and Joseph was a painting contractor while Mary was still spooling.  By 1940 they were residing at 58 Front St. in Northampton.  Mary was retired and Joseph was a laborer working on park improvements in Northampton.

Mary died in 1960 and Joseph in 1965.  Both are buried at Saint Mary Assumption Church cemetery in Haydenville, Hampshire Co., MA.  They had no children.

I feel a touch of sadness for both, but especially for Joseph.  He likely never returned to KY and probably never saw his parents or any of his siblings again.

Additions and/or corrections welcomed!

Joe & Dora Ellen Colley Swint

Some time ago I wrote about the Salathiel & Eva Phylena Conner Coffey family of Collin Co., TX.  One of their children mentioned was Laura Ella, born Oct. 23, 1908 in Silverton, Briscoe Co., TX who married Arlie Colley Swint.

That marriage took place c1926 in TX.  An exact date has not been found.  Arlie was born on Jun. 25, 1907 in TX to Joe and Dora Ellen Colley Swint.  There were two children born to that union:  J. "Jay" Ronald & Irma Glyn; Jay on Oct. 30, 1928 and Irma on Apr. 8, 1931.

Arlie died on Aug. 3, 1980 in Wichita Falls Co., TX and is buried at Rosemont Cemetery in Wichita Falls.  Neither a death date nor a burial site has been found thus far for Laura.

This morning I received an "obituary alert" for Jay who died on Sep. 19, 2011 at Sandy, Salt Lake Co., UT.  Jay was married to Lois Mae Roberts on Jun. 17, 1950 in Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., NM.

Obituary, The Salt Lake Tribune, Sep. 22, 2011

J Ronald Swint, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Sandy, Utah on Monday, September 19, 2011.

He was preceded in death by his sister and only sibling, Irma Glyn Beck.

Born to Arlie Collie Swint and Laura Ella (Coffey) Swint on October 30, 1928, in Lubbock, Texas, Jay spent his youth in Texas and Louisiana before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he met his lifelong companion Lois Mae Roberts. They were married June 17, 1950 and spent the next 61 years together, raising a family of four children, Mark (Peggy Jo), Mary Colovich (Brad), Carol Bay (Jamie) and Paul (Jayme). He left a large posterity with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Early in his life Jay began a career with Capitol Records. The job took the family around the country before ending up in Southern California where Jay worked in Hollywood as an executive in charge of artist relations and promotions. He later worked as an agent and manager for a number of successful entertainers. He knew and was friends with many famous and talented artists and musicians.

In later years he worked in the health spa business and explored his entrepreneurial skills with a number of interesting endeavors.

After retirement, Jay and Lois spent many hours pursuing their passions for travel and rock hounding, a favorite pastime. He also spent many enjoyable hours fly fishing and playing golf with his sons. He loved his family dearly and found great joy visiting with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

As active and ardent members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since their conversion in 1966, Jay and Lois solemnized their marriage in the Salt Lake Temple. They served an LDS mission to the Central America Area and were based in Guatemala in the mid 1990s. Jay also served in a Bishopric, on a High Council and in a Stake Presidency, as well as numerous other callings throughout his life. He was an inspiration to his family and will be deeply missed.

A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, September 22, 2011 and again from 10:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. the next morning at the Dimple Dell Park Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 9880 South 3100 East, Sandy, Utah. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 12:00 noon followed by interment at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery, located at 1950 E. 10600 South.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.jlswint@aol.com.

Jay's sister Irma died tragically from carbon monoxide poisoning on Dec. 22, 1973 in Pampa, Gray Co., TX.  She is buried at the Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, Potter Co., TX.

William Perry Coffey (1857-1926)

Update, May 1, 2012

Victor Lee Coffey and his wife Margaret were in the restaurant business for a number of years in Denver, CO.  In 1947 they sold the restaurant and retired.  They continued to dabble in buying and selling property and water stock through the early to mid-1950's.

On their income tax returns for those years, Victor and Margaret claimed the profits from those sales as Capital Gain income.  The IRS ruled that the property had been held for sale as a matter of "ordinary course of trade" and required the couple to pay taxes on the profit at Ordinary Income rates.

The couple filed a refund claim, which was refused and they followed up with a suit against the U.S. Government, which they also lost.*

In paragraph 9 of the document found at Justia we find the maiden name of Victor's wife when we learn that her brother, Thomas Nevin, a Denver attorney, had originated the suit as party to sale of the property in question.

*333 F.2d 945: Victor Lee Coffey, Sr., and Margaret H. Coffey, Appellants, v. United States of America, Appellee United States Court of Appears Tenth Circuit.

I have previously written about William Perry here, and later, his daughter, Rose Etta.

He continues to puzzle me however.  There is a headstone for him and his wife, Mary Ellen Wemple Coffey at Ocean View Cemetery, Eureka, Humboldt Co., CA.  On it, William's birth year is 1857 and his death year is 1926.

William has not been found in any census after 1900 when he and Mary Ellen were found in Coffeyville, Montgomery Co., KS.  In 1910, while still in Montgomery Co., Mary Ellen reported that she was a widow and the head of the household.  By the 1920 census she was in Eureka and again reported on the record that she was a widow and the head of household.

So, what happened to William?  Did he die in Kansas or Missouri and later reburied in CA?  Perhaps the stone is a memorial!?  It does appear to be a relatively new stone with only very slight weathering appearing in the photo.

Somewhat of another mystery in this family - at least to me - is the son Victor Lee "Dick" Coffey.  He was born in Indian Territory, Rogers Co., OK in 1893 and, is said to have married a lady by the name of Jessie Mable Roberts sometime before 1917.  On June 5 of that year he registered for the draft in Humboldt Co. and reported that he was married with two children.

In Jan., 1920 he was still in Eureka but living with his mother.  His son, Gail*, born Aug. 3, 1915 in Humboldt Co., was living with his grandmother Martha Robertson in Humboldt Co.  The child's father was born in KS and the mother in CA.

In 1930, Victor was in Denver, CO with his wife Margaret.  The couple had been married for nine years.  This wife was born in CO and her parents in "Free Ireland."  In fact, Victor's father was reported as having been born in "Free Ireland."  Correct Victor Coffey or, census error?  There was a child in the family, Victor Lee, Jr., born in 1922, Saline Co., KS.

*Others have reported this child as female, but it was enumerated as "male" and "grandson" in the census.  He is also thought to have died in Humboldt Co. in 1927.

Eligah Columbus & Vina Jane Keith Coffey

Updated Nov. 28, 2010

Eligah Columbus Coffey was a son of Lewis and Elizabeth "Betty" Watters Coffey.  These are Kentuckians who came out of North Carolina sometime in the early-to-mid 1800s.  Lewis was born in NC c1813 and was married in KY to Betty c1831.  Elijah was born in Wayne Co. (probably Eadsville) on Dec. 12, 1843.  My records show that he was the seventh of ten children; the first born in 1832, the last in 1850.  Photo, L-R Front: Roxie Amanda, Eligah Henry, Eligah Columbus & Sally Kate; L-R Rear: Nannie Sophie and Mary Lucy.

The first wife of Elijah was Mirah Emarine Freeman, born in KY on Jan. 9, 1852, died Oct. 15, 1877 in Wayne Co.  She gave him at least three children:

Elizabeth Jane, born Jun. 8, 1870 in Pulaski Co., died Jan. 8, 1941 in Wayne Co.  She married Rolly Stewart Lair c1895.  Elizabeth was the mother of at least three children.

John Lewis, born Dec. 12, 1872 in Wayne Co.  He died there on Apr. 10, 1948.  His wife was Geneva E. Lair - probably some relation to Rolly - on Apr. 23, 1898.  She gave him at least nine children.

The last child that I have for Elijah and Mirah is Hiram Tolbert Coffey, born Jul. 27, 1876, died 1941.  He married Cordie Thomas, born Apr. 27, 1878, died Sep. 2, 1919.  She was the mother of at least six children.

Elijah took a second wife on Apr. 29, 1881 in Wayne Co.  She was Vina Jane Keith, a daughter of Joshua, and was born Dec. 8, 1863 in that county.  Before she died Vina had produced at least eight more children for Elijah.  She gave birth to her last child in Nov., 1897 and died at age 33 on Dec. 6, of that year.

These are the children of Elijah and Vina:
Edward Cullem, born 1881, died 1966; married Gertie Evana Taylor in 1903.  She was born in 1884 and died in 1955.  They were the parents of at least eight children.

James Hardin, born 1882, died 1942.  He married Lillie Abbie Mounce, born in 1889.  They were parents of at least nine children.

Joseph Joel "Joe", born 1885, died 1953.  He married Rutha Mae Lair in 1907.  She was the daughter of George and Jemima Dodson Lair.  Before she died in 1976, she had given Joseph at least eight children.

Nannie Sophie, born 1887, married William Zackary Lair, born 1908, died 1970.  The age difference is suspect.  I have no children for them.

Mary Lucy, born 1889, died 1972.  She married George Roberts in 1920 and was the mother of at least two children.

Roxie Amanda, born 1893, died 1920.  She married Joseph McClain in 1914.  I have no children for them.

Sally Kate, born 1895, died 1966.  I don't believe she ever married.

Elijah Henry "Lige", born 1897, married Mary J., maiden name unknown.  I have no children for them.
I haven't connected all of the Lairs and do not know if they were all from the same family.  I do have some additional information on the children and grandchildren of Elijah and Vina Jane that I will share.
