William R. & Julia Ann Coffey Stogsdill

The Stogsdill surname has been found spelled in various ways and, it takes a bit of time to search for them in the census record.

Julia was the daughter of Albert and Sarah Goodnight Coffey.  Laurence Coffey, in his work Thomas Coffey and His Descendants, tells us that they were married and, the Indiana State Library tells us they were married on Dec. 5, 1833 in Monroe Co., IN.

According to one biography that I have found for the family tells us that Wesley Coffey was the eldest of their only two children. The other child was Julia Ann, born in IN in Aug., 1836.  Actually, she was the elder of the two because Wesley was born not born until Dec. 13, 1837 in Clay Twp., Owen Co., IN.  Of course, the Bio could be accurate and Julia's birth month and year could be off by a couple of years.  I have no source for the 1836 date.

In any event, Julia Ann married William R. Stogsdill on Nov. 2, 1856 in Owen Co.*  They lived in Ellettsville and Spencer through at least 1880 when I lose them in the census.  As far as I can determine, she and William had only one child, a son named Mandeville E. Stogsdill, born in Jan., 1857.

Mandeville married Julia F. Edwards on Sep. 26, 1877 in Owen Co.**  They had at least four children:  Mable Olive "Olive," born Sep., 1880, died Jun. 6, 1957 in Los Angeles Co., CA and was buried at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, Los Angeles Co., CA.  Olive married Frank A. Ross on Oct. 29, 1900 in Marion Co., IN.*  Their next child was Rush, born May 1886, died Dec. 26, 1937 in Joplin, Jasper Co., MO.  I have one marriage record for him to Ada Babbs on Sep. 30, 1906.  His headstone in Spring Vale Cemetery, Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., IN tells us that he was married to Ruth Ann Hetrick at the time of death.  The third child born to Mandeville and Julia was Layton, born Oct., 1893 and who married Meta G. Bender on Aug. 29, 1916* in Tippecanoe Co.  Their fourth and last know child was Ralph, born c1896. I have found no additional information on him.

Albert's son Wesley W. Coffey was born Dec. 13, 1837 in Clay Twp., Owen Co. and died there before 1910.  His wife was Laura Joseph Howe, born in July 1843 to Amon Price and Harriet C. Thatcher Howe. I know of three children:  Byron Howe, born Jan. 28, 1866, died Jul. 4, 1945 in Los Angeles County.  He married Nellie Branam on Jan. 9, 1894 in Owen Co.  Nellie was born in Sep., 1873 to Larose and Susan Amanda Halbert Branham and died in Los Angeles Co. on Jul. 4, 1962.  Interesting that she died 17 years to the day after Byron.  Their children were:  Thatcher Howe, Naomi Josephine, Cecile Louise and Jule Hubert.

Wesley's other children were Hallie H., born 1874, died 1969 and, Albert Price, born 1876, died 1946, both in Los Angeles Co.  I have no other information on these two.

The following biography*** tells us a bit more about Wesley:

"Wesley Coffey, attorney at law, was born December 13, 1843 [sic] in Clay Township, Owen County.  His parents, Albert and Sarah (Gooderight) [sic] [Goodnight] Coffey - the former a native of North Carolina and the latter of Kentucky - emigrated to Indiana from North Carolina about 1828.  Four years later they came to Owen County, and located in Clay Township, on a farm where the mother now resides.  The father died in October of 1838.

Wesley is the elder of two children, and lived at home until 1861, when he enlisted in Company H, Fourteenth Indiana Volunteers, under Capt. J. H. Martin, and was in active service for two years.  Then, on account of ill-health, he was put on detached service, sent to Frederick, Md., and remained there until the close of the war.  He participated in the following battles:  Rich Mountain, Cheat Mountain and battle of Winchester.

At the close of the war, he returned home to Owen County, remained one year, after which he purchased a farm in Clay Township, where he remained two years.  He then sold and went into the grocery business at Spencer with W. R. Stogsdil.  About 1875, he sold his interest and went into the insurance business, and the study of the bar in Spencer.

He was married in April, 1865, to Laura J. Howe, daughter of Amon P. and Harriet Howe, old settlers in Owen County.  Mr. Coffey is a member of the A. F. & A. M., of the K. of P., of the Royal Arcanum, and the Grand Army of the Republic, and was for four years Justice of the Peace of Owen County.  He is a public spirited citizen, and highly estemed [sic] by those [who] know him."

In 1860 Wesley was found living with William and Julia Stogsdill in Elletsville.  In 1861 he enlisted in Co. H, 14th Indiana Volunteers in Clay Co.  He married Laura Josephine on Apr. 13, 1865 in Owen Co.* and, from 1870 to 1900 he and Laura appeared in the Owen Co. census.  He died before 1910 when Laura was found as head of household in Spencer.  In 1920 she had relocated to Indianapolis, Marion Co. and by 1930 was in San Gabriel, Los Angeles Co.  In 1939 and again in 1941 she was living with children Hallie and Albert at 709 E. Hellman Ave. in Wilmar City, Los Angeles Co.¹ I have not found a death date for her.

William Harrison & Hillead Oakley Caudille Coffee Update 3-9-2011

After posting the last blog about Arthur E. & Nora B. Vickery Coffee, I decided to take another look at the children of William and Hillead.  Turns out, I had more information than I expected.

In addition to Arthur, child number 7, William and Hillead had at least 12 other children, all born in McDonald Co., MO:

James Milo, born Jul. 8, 1869, died Mar. 23, 1936 in Fairview, Newton Co., MO and was buried there at the Dice Cemetery.  His first wife was Sarah Horner who gave him Hugh Edwin, born Sep. 12, 1895, died Mar. 14, 1926 in Fairview, Newton Co., MO.  His wife was Mellie E. Russell, born Mar. 25, 1899, a daughter of Steve and Maggie J. Russell.  Mellie died Dec. 27, 1976 in Fairview.  Hugh and Mellie are both buried at Fairview Cemetery.  Children:  Kenneth W., Shirley; Joan (or, Joanne) and Mellie Hugh, a daughter, born shortly after Hugh died.

James and Sarah's second and last child was Floyd, born Sep. 8, 1901 in McDonald Co., died Oct. 7, 1976 in Payne Co., OK.  He married Georgia E. Carpenter in Nov., 1932 at Newton Co., MO.  She was born in MO on Nov. 9, 1903 and died in OK on Jan. 4, 2001.  Both are buried at Fairlawn Cemetery in Cushing, Payne Co.  Their children were Jane, born MO and Robert, born OK.

James married second to Mariana Lewis c1909 in MO.  Mariana was the daughter of E. J. Lewis and was born in Wales in May, 1885.  They had one child, Helen Louise, born c1913 in Fairview.

William and Hillead's second child was Mary Eliza, born Jan. 8, 1873, died Apr. 20, 1933 in Pineville, McDonald Co.  She married James William Ross, a son of Samuel Lafayette and Mahala Prigmore Ross.  James was born Oct. 5, 1865 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE and died in Pineville on Feb. 12, 1937.  Both he and Mary are buried in Pineville.  I know of one child, Hillead Mahala, born Feb. 22, 1895 in Bethel, TX [several of those in TX, and no county was given] and died in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX on Jul. 12, 1954.  She is buried at Miami, Ottawa Co., OK under the surname Jeffers.

Coffee-Booth Marriage

Edward Enoch was the third child.  He was born Apr. 27, 1874 and died May 27, 1961 at Pineville.  His wife was Pearl C. Whiteside, born in Arkansas to James N. & Henrietta Whiteside on Jan. 7, 1887.  She and Edward were married in Pineville on Sep. 6, 1903.  Pearl died Jan. 24, 1977 in Pineville and both she and Edward are buried there.  Children were Gladys, born c1907 and Glesnor James, a son, born Feb. 27, 1909. He married Ruby L. Booth, daughter of John E. and Hattie M. Booth on Jan. 5, 1931 in Kansas City, Jackson Co., MO, and died there on Mar. 7, 1968. Ruby L. was born c1911 in Baxter Springs, Cherokee Co., KS.

Minnie Zeronia [sic] followed Edward.  She was born Oct. 16, 1875 and died May 29, 1943 at White Rock Twp., in McDonald Co.  Minnie first Married Samuel H. Largent on Mar. 26, 1893.  He was born in West Virginia in Nov. 1865 and died on Jan. 26, 1908 in McDonald Co.  Their children were:  Frank W., Christel [sic] P., Leslie Verne; Archie E., and Samuel H., Jr.  Minnie married second to George Washington Mulkey on Nov. 12, 1912.  She became the mother of two of his children, Leva, a daughter born c1915 and Fred, born c1919.  George died on May 21, 1939.  Both he, Minnie and Samuel, as well as Archie and Samuel, Jr. are buried at Jane Cemetery in McDonald Co.

Child five was Albie Ravendale, a daughter, born Jan. 27, 1877.  She married twice: first to William H. Carnes and second to E. E. Parsons.  She died on Mar. 11, 1923 in Jane.  Child six was Alex M., who was born Jun. 8, 1878  and died in Aug., 1879 in Jane. He is buried at Jane cemetery.  Albie is probably there as well but I have found no record.

Arthur was number 7.  See earlier blog.

John Finis followed Arthur.  He was born Jun. 23, 1881, died Jan. 2, 1957 in Rogers, Benton Co., AR.  His wife was Cora L. Anglin, daughter of Jim and Ida Anglin.  She was born Nov. 21, 1890 in McDonald Co. and died Jul., 1976 in Rogers.  They were married on Apr. 11, 1909 in McDonald Co., and were parents of at least four children:  One unnamed infant was born c Dec. 1912 and died on Dec. 22 of that year and was buried at Jane.  Pansy Ollie Dean was born Aug. 30, 1914 and died on Oct. 15 of that year.  See is also buried at Jane.  Two other daughters, Oretta [sic] was born c1916 and Loretta [sic] was born c1917.

The next two children of William and Hillead died in infancy.  Meredith, a son, was born Feb. 26, 1884 and died in May, 1885 and was buried at Jane.  Albert was born May 26, 1885 and died in 1887 and is also probably buried at Jane.

Pearl came next, born Jun. 12, 1888 in McDonald Co., died in South Dakota, year unknown. She married Noah T. Landers c1903 in McDonald Co. where they lived until sometime after the 1910 census. They had four children in McDonald Co.: Ruel E., Earl M., Orval C., and Jewel B. By 1920 they were in Union Co., SD where they farmed and lived out the remainder of their lives. Noah died in 1963 at Elk Point in Union Co., and both are believed buried at the Elk Point cemetery.

Grace followed on Mar. 20, 1890 and died Aug. 5, 1921 at Jane.  She apparently also never married.

The last child of William and Hillead was Oma, born Jun. 13, 1893, died Sep. 7, 1958 at Pineville.  Oma married Luther A. Winters, a son of Reuben and Rhoda Lucinda Pendergraft Winters.  Luther was born in MO on Jul. 12, 1890 and died there on Mar. 10, 1967.  He and Oma were married in McDonald Co. on May 29, 1910.  They were parents of one child, a son Chester A. born c1912 in Pineville.  She and Luther, as well as Luther's parents are buried at Brush Creek cemetery in Pineville.

Meredith and Elizabeth "Betsy" Hopper Coffey

I've previously written a small bit about Meredith as a son of John W. & Rebecca Ragsdale Coffey.  The original blog written in Sept., 2007 can be viewed by clicking on the title link.

This is a little of what I wrote:

Meredith, born Jan. 6, 1822, died Feb. 10, 1892 [unsourced]. In the 1860 McDonald Co., MO census he was 33 yrs old indicating that he was born closer to 1827. This would be a more reasonable date compared to birth years of other children. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Hopper c1841 in McDonald Co. They appeared there in the 1860 census, 1861 McDonald Co. tax rolls, and the 1870 and 1880 census. Meredith is thought to have died there on Feb. 10, 1892.

Beginning with Meredith the family spelled their name Coffee.  All of the photos of family headstones that I have seen now standing in the Jane, McDonald Co., MO cemetery are inscribed with that spelling.  Additionally, all census records that I have inspected spell the family name that way.  The few death certificates so far located also show this spelling.  Living descendants might also continue this practice.

Meredith and Elizabeth's children as I know them were:

Eliza, born c1842 in TN, died c1880, place unknown - is said to have married a Mr. Pitts.  No other information.

William Harrison, born Feb. 24, 1843 in TN, died Jul. 6, 1921 in Pineville Twp., McDonald Co., MO and was buried at Jane cemetery.  He married Hilead* Oakley Caudille on Jan. 22, 1868 in McDonald Co.  She was born Jan. 26, 1850 in Robinson Co., KY and died in Jane on Feb. 6, 1912.  She too is buried at Jane.

William and Hilead had at least 13 children, all thought to have been born in McDonald Co.:

1 - James "Milo", born Jul. 8, 1869, died Mar, 23, 1936 in Fairview, Newton Co., MO.  He is buried at Davey Cemetery in Fairview.

2 - Mary Eliza, born Jan. 8, 1873, died Apr. 20, 1933 in Pineville Twp.  She married James William Ross, born Oct. 5 1865 in Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE, died Feb. 12, 1937 in Pineville Twp.  According to their death certificates, both are buried in Pineville.  James was a son of Samuel Lafayette and Mahala Prigmore Ross.

3 - Edward Enoch, born Apr. 27, 1874, died May 27, 1961 in Pineville.  He married Pearl C. [LNU], born C1888 in MO.  They had at least two children; Gladys, born c1907 and Glesnor [sic] (male), born c1910.  Both are buried at Pineville.

4 - Minnie Zeronia, born Oct. 16, 1875 and died May 29, 1943 in Jane.  She is said to have married a Mr. Mulkey.

6 - Alex M., born Jun. 8, 1878, died Aug., 1879, buried at Jane.

7 - Arthur E., born Oct. 8, 1879, died Feb. 4, 1938 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA.  He married Nora [LNU], born c1883 in MO.  They had children: Violet, Martin, Winfred, Jesse, Aaron, Earl and Viva, all born in MO between 1904 and 1918.

8 - John Finis, born Jun. 23, 1881, died Jan. 3, 1957 in Rogers, Benton Co., AR.  He married Coral L. [LNU] c1909 and had children: unnamed infant, born before Dec. 22, 1912, died on that date and buried at Jane; Pansy, born Aug. 30, 1914, died Oct. 15, 1904, also buried at Jane and shares a headstone with the unnamed infant; Orreta, born c1916 and Loretta, born c1917.

I have not yet found spouses for the remaining children, some of whom are also likely buried at Jane or Pineville:

9 - Meredith, born Feb. 26, 1884, died May, 1885 in Jane. 

10 - Albert, born May 26, 1885, died 1887 in Jane.

11 - Pearl, born Jan. 7, 1887, died Jan. 24, 1977.

12 - Grace, born Mar. 20, 1890, died Aug. 5, 1921.

13 - Oma, born Jan. 13, 1893, died Sep. 7, 1958.  She is said to have been buried at Brush Creek cemetery in Pineville.

Lawson H. Coffey - Update 5/24/2010

[Although the Warde1 report indicates that Lawson was born in Indiana, all census records indicate that he was born in Iowa. The census records could be in error or, the enumerator using the accepted abbreviation of Iowa (IA) for Indiana.]

He died on Aug 7, 1904 in Alanthus Grove, Gentry Co., MO and buried at Jennings Cemetery.

Lawson Coffey, Sr., was born in Owen county, Indiana, August 15, 1820, and grew up to be a quiet, orderly young man. He was highly esteemed by all, spent much of his time in the employ of his brother-in-law, David Allen, in buying and selling stock. In his business transactions he was regarded as trustworthy, honest, and reliable. He was baptized and united with the Baptist church at Bethel, Owen County, Indiany [sic], about 60 years ago, and always took delight in the old songs that were sung by many sweet, famillar [sic] voices now hushed in death.

In 1850 he was united in marriage with Polly Adoline [sic] Litton. Two boys were the result of this union, one of whom is still living. His first wife died in 1857 and he was united in marriage with Eliza Ann Campbell, on the 15th day of August, 1858. Eight children were the result of this union, 5 boys and 3 girls, 6 of whom are now living - 4 boys and 2 girls.

He moved from Indiana to the village of Alanthus, Mo., in Gentry county, one of the most beautiful garden spots in the world. In 1856, he united with the Christian church in Alanthus, Mo, about 30 years ago and lived a quiet and peaceable life of faith and hope, and was regarded by all as a faithful brother and friend whose voice was always heard on the side of right. No one loved quiet and order better than he. In his home he struggled to rule in love, and was always happy in the joy and happiness of loved ones there.

His faithful companion will miss him most of all, for she has stood by him and he has been her constant care during the long years he has been a patient sufferer.

He came to the end of life's journey on Sunday at 12:30 a.m., August 7, 1904. The funeral took place at the Baptist church, conducted by Elder J. H. Coffey, August 9, at 10:00 a.m., after which all that was mortal of Lawson Coffey, Sr., was laid to rest in the Jennings cemetery to await the resurrection morning.

Elder J. H. Coffey

He was buried in Aug 1904 in Jennings Cemetery, Alanthus Grove, Gentry Co., MO.3

[His obituary says that he was born in Owen Co., IN, but that is probably too early for this family to have moved there.]

[It also relates that his first wife Polly, died in 1857 after giving birth to two sons. It also provides the date for his marriage to Eliza. They later moved to Gentry Co., MO.]

Lawson H. COFFEY and Mary Adeline (Polly) LITTON were married on Feb 1, 1850 in Indiana.4 Mary Adeline (Polly) LITTON (daughter of Joel LITTON and Sarah BRIDGES) was born in Monroe Co., IN on Oct 25, 1827. She died in 1857 in Alanthus Grove, Gentry Co., MO. Lawson H. COFFEY and Mary Adeline (Polly) LITTON had the following children:

2 i. Columbus COFFEY was born in Iowa about 1851. He died on May 1, 1895 in Gentry Co., MO.5 He was buried in May 1895 in Jennings Cemetery, Alanthus Grove, Gentry Co., MO.3

From the Warde1 report:

"1860 Gentry Co., Wilson Twp., District 63 (part 2) Hugginsville post office census under "Coffee" lists Lawson, Eliza, Columbus age 9 and Noah age 7. Someone else transcribed the same census in 1956 naming children as Columbine age 9 and Noah age 7. According to the Coffey family bible, Columbus and Noah were the children of Lawson Howard Coffey and 1st wife Matilda Adeline Litten b. 25 Oct. 1827 and Columbus was born in 1845. If this is so, then the Grave in Jennings Cem. Gentry Co., MO. next to Lawson Howard is his son. Marker says Columbus Coffey, died 5/1/1895 at age 50. This would match the family bible death records."

3 ii. Noah COFFEY was born in Iowa about 1853.

Lawson H. COFFEY and Eliza Ann CAMPBELL were married on Aug 15, 1858 in Monroe Co., IN. They appeared in the census on Jul 19, 1860 in Gentry Co., MO.6

The children in the 1860 census may be those by Lawson's first wife, Mary "Polly" Litton.

They appeared in the census on Aug 23, 1870 in Gentry Co., MO.7 They appeared in the census on Jun 19, 1880 in Gentry Co., MO.8

[His obituary indicates that he and Eliza Ann were the parents of 5 boys and 3 girls. One boy is missing from this genealogy and needs to be identified.]

Eliza Ann CAMPBELL (daughter of William CAMPBELL and Artie ROUNDTREE) was born in Monroe Co., Moreau Twp., IN on Jun 18, 1836.9 She appeared in the census on Apr 18, 1910 in Gentry Co., MO.10 She died of gangrene and organic heart disease on Mar 6, 1915 in Stanberry, Gentry Co., MO.11

Obituary from The Herald newspaper:

Eliza A. Coffey was born in Monroe county, Mo., June 18th, 1836, and died in Stanberry [sic], Mo., March 6th, 1915, aged 78 years, 7 months and 12 days. [recalculation shows that she was aged 78 years, 8 months and 18 days of age at time of death] She was the wife of Lawson Coffey, who preceded her in death Aug. 4, 1901. They moved to Gentry county in their early married life and this has been her home for nearly 50 years.

To this union were born eight children - five boys and three girls. Wm. A. died when about two weeks old; Amanda E., wife of Charley Rainey, who died Oct. 29, 1899; Richard B., and Geo. S. Coffey, of Stanberry, Mo.; Mrs. M. F. Barton, of St. Joseph, Mo.; Chas. T. of Deadwood, S.D.; Lawson, Jr.; [sic] of Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. S. L. Rodecker of Topeka, Kans.

(Grandma Coffey confessed her faith in Christ when 18 years of age and for 60 years she has been true to her convictions. She had a wonderful memory and a great vitality, always cheerful, even when suffering great pain.)

The funeral services were held at her Stanberry residence, conducted by Eld. Lee. H. Barnum, and assisted by Bros. Wilkins and Tandy. A farther [sic] service was held in Alanthus by Eld. Henry Smith at the church. Interment in Jennings cemetery Tuesday afternoon.

'Tis sweet to breath thy name;
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.

More and more each day we miss you,
Friends may think the wound is healed,
But they little know the sorrow
That lies within our hearts concealed.

A handwritten note attached to the obituary reads:

"Statement by Mrs. Dora (Coffey) Miller Granddaughter of Reuben Coffey the 2nd of Owen Co., Ind. and his wife Exea Sophronia Stepp

Mrs. Miller lives in Stanberry Mo.

Many of his grandchildren live there.

This is the obituary of Eliza Ann Campbell Coffey wife of Lawson Coffey.

They were married at Sweet Home Mo. on horseback but I have not been able to find marriage record as they tell me the court house was not there in Maryville Mo. at that time

The Mrs. Barton mentioned is Mrs. Mary Francis [sic] Boatwright. In later years she married Rev. H. C. Barton, a Baptist Minister. She died in St. Joseph, MO."


She was buried in Mar 1915 in Jennings Cemetery, Alanthus Grove, Gentry Co., MO. Lawson H. COFFEY and Eliza Ann CAMPBELL had the following children:

A resident of Stanberry and Alanthus for many years, died last Friday at St. Joseph. Services were held Sunday from the Phillips Mortuary by Lawrence H. Cox, pastor of the Stanberry Baptist Church, interment in High Ridge Cemetery. The son of Lawson & Eliza Ann Coffey, born 26 May 1863 at Alanthus Grove, was 82 years of age. United with the Christian Church early, married Miss Gertrude Dorr 24 May 1894 and had one son, Earl. Married Miss Elsie Randleman 12 Aug. 1907 & parents of two sons, William Lawson Coffey & Otto Marion Coffey; a brother Lawson L. Coffey of Los Angeles.

George L. Coffey Died Last Friday

Well known resident of Stanberry and Alanthus succumbed last Friday. Funeral here Sunday.

Geo. L. Coffey, for many years a well-known resident of Stanberry and Alanthus, died last Friday at St. Joseph. He had been in ill health for several years.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Phillips Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence H. Cox, pastor of the Stanberry Baptist church. Interment was in the High Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Coffey, the son of Lawson and Eliza Ann Coffey, was born on May 26, 1863, at Alanthus Grove, MO. He was 82 years old at the time of his death. He was a member of one of the pioneer families of Gentry County and, with the exception of a few years spent in Oklahoma, the greater part of his life was spent in the county.

In early life, Mr. Coffey united with the Christian church and remained loyal in that faith throughout his life. For many years he was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and he had many friends and acquaintances in this and the Alanthus vicinity.

He was married on Aug. 12, 1894, to Miss Gertrude Dorr. They were the parents of one son, Earl, who lives in Oklahoma.

He was married on Aug. 12, 1907, to Miss Elsie Randleman. They are the parents of two sons, William Lawson and Otto Marion. Both are in service in the Navy, the former being stationed at a California camp and the latter serving in the South Pacific.

In addition to the three sons, Mr. Coffey is survived by one brother, Lawson L. Coffey, of Los Angeles, and by several nephews and nieces. There are numerous other relatives and friends left to mourn his death.

He was buried on Jul 29, 1945 in High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry, Gentry Co., MO.13
