The Fitzgerald and the Coffey families of Nelson Co., VA are forever tied to one another. Sometimes, it's very difficult to figure out which James, Elizabeth, Martha, Mary Coffey married which John, James, Mary or Elizabeth Fitzgerald. As I go back and forth between the Virginia Coffey families and those elsewhere, I invariably find some family error that I have created or a link that I didn't understand the first time around.
A friend, Wayne Coffey of Georgia, formerly of Virginia, has been a great help to me in figuring out who is who.
Working with these families is much like attempting to unravel a thousand yards of twine that has become tangled and re-tangled over a century or two and, each tangle a Gordian knot. Working on them from the disadvantage of being 800 miles from valuable sources - not otherwise available on the web - probably makes the tangled twine maybe twice as long.
This blog is about Spotswood B. and Nancy Carr Fitzgerald. They had three children, two of which married into the Coffey families of Nelson Co. Spotswood was a few years younger than Nancy; in fact by about 10 years. He was born in Virginia c1811 and she c1801.
The marriage record for him and Nancy reports Aug. 8, 1838 in Nelson Co. and, it gives Nancy's surname as Fitzgerald. I'm lost as to whether she was originally a Carr who married a Fitzgerald and then sometime later married Spotswood. I do not have a source for the Carr surname which means somewhere back in the dawn of this project I found it "somewhere" but did not record the source.
I find them in the 1850 and 1860 census only, both times in Nelson Co. It appears they had only the three children: Joshua, born c1840; Mary Jane, born c1843 and Lewis Perkins, born Jan., 1845, each in Nelson Co. I have not found a death record for them and do not know where they are buried.
Joshua enlisted in the Nelson Light Artillery Battery, Rives Company, on Aug. 31, 1861. The record reports that he was "mustered out" on Feb. 18, 1862, but did not survive the war.
Mary Jane married David Alfred Coffey, a son of Holloway Stewart* and Catherine Fitzgerald Coffey. I suspect that Catherine, born c1814, and Spotswood, born c1811, were brother and sister, making Mary Jane and David first cousins. But, I have no proof of that yet.
David was born in Nelson Co. in 1832 and married Mary Jane on Nov. 16, 1858 in that county. He died there in 1894 and was buried at White Rock Cemetery in Montebello, Nelson Co. Mary Jane survived until 1923 and was also buried at White Rock.
The children that I have so far located for them are: 1) Dilly Jane, born c1860; 2) Vanessa or Vernice "Nicey", born Jan., 1866, married Andrew J. Bryant on Nov. 21, 1883 in Nelson Co. One of their daughters married Wesley Robert Coffey, son of Edmund and Martha Snead Coffey. Wesley was Mary Etta's first cousin, twice removed. 3) Nancy, born c1864; 4) Eli Davis, born 1871, died 1942, married first cousin Frances Catherine Coffey, daughter of Alexander S. and Sarah Ann Fitzgerald Coffey. 5) Mary J., born c1872; 6) Malinda F., born c1874; 7) Fletcher Floyd, born May 1879, died 1934; married Mary Wyatt "Mollie" Fitzgerald on Dec. 29, 1925. Both had been previously married; Fletcher to Viola Bertha Fitzgerald with whom he had at least six children and, "Mollie" to Ernest Hope Fitzgerald in 1898, with whom she had at least five children. 8) M. Belle, born c1884, married Gilbert Thompson in Nelson Co. on Jun. 19, 1922. Belle was 38 yrs. old; Gilbert was 26. They had at least one child, Ester, born c1824.
Lewis Perkins was the third and perhaps last child born to Spotswood and Nancy. He came along in Jan., 1845. I haven't found an enlistment record for him as he was apparently too young to serve when the war began. He lived until 1926 and was buried at White Rock. He and Mary Ann Coffey were married Mar. 5, 1867 in Nelson Co. She was born in 1845 and died in 1925 and was also buried at White Rock. Mary Ann was a daughter of Edmund and Martha Snead Coffey.
There were at least eight children born to them:
1) Nettie, born Feb. 1868, died Apr. 1965, married John Emmett Taylor in Sep, 1892. Parents of at least five children born between 1894 and 1912. 2) Jasper N. (Newton?), born 1871, died Oct., 1896. He married Elvira F. Coffey, a half-sister to David Alfred Coffey. Elvira later married Elliot Walker Fitzgerald (1902) and died in 1960. 3) Eliza Jane, born 1873, died 1900, apparently never married; 4) Martha Elizabeth, 1876-1909, married John Cyrus Fitzgerald; 5) Mary Alice, born 1878, died 1968, married Holloway Stewart Coffey, Jr.; 6) Sally Jane (Henry?), married Mayo Cabell Fitzgerald in 1899. He died in 1955, she in 1925. He is buried at White Rock; I am unsure where Sally is buried. They had at least seven children: Arthur, Savannah, Isaac Harrison; Ezra; Carrie, Waverly Ann; and Chester Martin. 7) Teressie, born 1887, died 1989 in Waynesboro, VA. Married Charles Austin Coffey, another son of Holloway Stewart Coffey and Virginia Bryant. Charles was born in 1878 and died in 1953. Both are buried at White Rock. Their children were at least four: Eula Beatrice; Gladys Green; Woody Austin and Myrtle Virginia.

*Holloway Stewart Coffey was married at least four times. He had at least six children by Catherine Campbell; one by third wife Delilah Sneed and at least four by fourth wife, Virginia Bryant.

Woodson Robert & Frances C. Coffey Fitzgerald
Sorting out the Fitzgeralds, Campbells and Coffeys of Nelson Co., VA is like trying to put 1000 decks of playing cards back together after tossing them into the air during a hurricane! Hopefully, I have correctly put together the following!
[Update: 11-11-11: Thanks to Brad Fitzgerald of Roanoke, VA I have been able to clarify and update some of the information about this family. First and probably most important is the correction of the name Robert Woodson to Woodson Robert. Other chances are noted below.]
Woodson Robert Fitzgerald was born in Nelson Co. on Oct. 31, 1807 and died there on Jul. 7, 1886. He was married on Aug. 23, 1830 to Frances C. Coffey, a daughter of Reuben G. & Nancy Giles Coffey. Reuben P.* [sic] Coffey was security. Readers may know that Reuben was a brother to William who married Elizabeth "Betsy" Giles, both daughters of William and Margaret Giles. (anyone know Margaret's maiden name?) Frances died Nov. 27, 1886 at Massies Mill in Nelson Co. Both are said to be buried at a Fitzgerald Family Cemetery** in Nelson Co.
Their children were at least six. Approximately 4 years passed after their 1830 marriage before the first known child was born so, perhaps at least one other was born before 1834.
The first child was Mary Jane, born Mar. 17, 1834, died Feb. 14, 1922. She married Hezekiah Coffey on Dec. 19, 1855 in Nelson Co. Hezekiah was a son of Edmund Coffey and Martha Snead. He died in July, 1863 at Gettysburg in Adams Co., PA.
They had two children: Martin Marcellus, born Dec. 27, 1854, died Sep. 24, 1932 in Augusta Co., VA. His wife was Teressa Catherine Fitzgerald, daughter of James Milton and Ardenia Coffey Fitzgerald. He and Teressa were married on Dec. 26, 1878 in Nelson Co. Second child was Sarah Frances, born May 10, 1860 in Nelson Co. and, died Nov. 19, 1906. Her husband was David Edward Painter, born to John Painter and Nancy Ellen Fitzgerald on Aug. 22, 1856. He died Jul., 1945 in Nelson Co.
Woodson & Frances' second child was Edward Addison Fitzgerald, born c1838 in Nelson Co., died 1915 in VA. He married Nancy E. Coffey on Jun. 2, 1865 in Nelson Co. Her parents were Holloway Stewart Coffey and his wife, Catherine "Kate" Fitzgerald. Holloway and Frances were first cousins, he a son of William Coffey and Elizabeth Giles. Children of Edward and Nancy - as I know them - were Blanchetta, born c1866, John Silas, born c1868, Edward Alexander, born about May, 1870 and Raleigh Woodson, born Nov. 4, 1880. All were born in Nelson Co.
[Update 11-11-11: Another son, John C. has been found. He was born c1842 in Nelson Co. and died during the Civil War. He was a member of the Nelson Light Artillery, Rives Battery. He is believed to have died in a (field?) hospital rather than killed in action. He appears in the Virginia Regimental History book as a member of the Rives Battery and that he was a brother to Philander Hersey Fitzgerald (Brad Fitzgerald of Roanoke provided info on this son)]
Following Edward Addison was Philander Hersey, born Feb., 1844, died Oct. 6, 1925 in Albemarle Co. He married Amanda Jane Coffey, born c1849. She was a daughter of Reuben G. and Margaret Snead Coffey. This Reuben G. was a son of Edmond S. & Nancy Barnett Coffey. Philander and Amanda were parents to12 14 children: Ruth J., James Irvin, Linda J., Anna Parker, Perry Dickerson, Eudora, Richard, Gilbert Walker, Quintus, June C., Myrtle Lee, Mittie Jackson, Lloyd Washington, and Dulcie C.
Woodson and Fannie's next child was Sarah Ann, born Sep. 12, 1846, died Apr. 15, 1926. She married Alexander S. Coffey, a son of the above Holloway Stewart and Catherine Fitzgerald Coffey. Alexander was born Mar. 2, 1844 and died Jul. 20, 1929 in Nelson Co. They were married in that county on Jan. 16, 1873. Their children were: Frances "Fannie" Catherine, Adolphus Franklin, Mary Docia, Robert Alexander, and Charlie Cleveland.
Napoleon Dewey followed Sarah Ann. He was born Apr. 20, 1847 and diedbefore 1930 Nov. 18, 1922 in Nelson Co. His wife was Lucinda C. Blackwell, born c1850 in VA. They had at least 10 children: William, Cornelia, Robert, Charles Napoleon, Lilly M., Serena, Ella G., Eliza J., Coral L., and Mary Lula. Charles Napoleon was born Feb. 7, 1875 and died Dec. 26, 1949. His wife was Melissa Stevens Truslow, daughter of Joseph Walker and Minerva Ann Thompson Truslow. They were parents of at least nine children but I have not found any that married into the Coffey family. Names and particulars are available if needed.
One last child of Woodson and Fannie is said to be Josephine, born c1852.However, I have no other information about her. She married in Nelson Co. on Dec. 30, 1869 to William H. Blackwell, born c1849 in Rockbridge Co., VA.
I could use some help sorting out the various Fitzgerald Cemeteries from someone with intimate knowledge of the area!

A third is said to be at Crabtree Falls and referred to as the Achilles Fitzgerald Family Cemetery. I do not yet know which is the correct cemetery for Woodson Robert and Frances.

And I do swear that I am the widow of Hezekiah Coffey who was a member of Co. F 49th Infantry Regiment and who, while in the discharge of his duty in military service during the late war between the States, lost his life.
And I do further swear that I am not receiving aid from or a pension from any State or from The United States, and that I do not hold any national, State or county office which pays me in fees or salary over three hundred dollars; that my income from no source amounts to three hundred dollars; and that I do not own in my own right property of the assessed value of one thousand dollars; ___ that I am now entitled to receive annually the sum of thirty dollars under the terms of the aforesaid act of the General Assembly.

Taylor and Coffey of Massies Mill, Nelson Co., VA
John H. [probably Henry] Taylor, was born c1834 in Nelson Co. and died there on May 12, 1896. He was married c1853 to Sarah E. Wood, a daughter of Arthur and Sarah A. Wood. Sarah Wood Taylor was born c1836, death date unknown. Both are buried in the Pleasant [Pleas] Taylor cemetery in Nelson Co.
They were the parents of at least 10 children:
1 - William Henry "Billy" Taylor was born Apr. 10, 1954 at Massies Mill and died in Nelson Co. on Apr. 8, 1928. Billie married Martha Jane Coffey on Jan. 20, 1873 in Nelson Co. Martha Jane was born in Jan., 1856 at Massies Mill and died in Nelson Co. on Feb. 5, 1935. They too are buried in the Pleas Taylor cemetery. Martha Jane was the daughter and ninth child of Edmund and Martha Snead Coffey.
3 - James Lucien, born c1860 in Nelson Co., married Rose Ella Coffey on Jan. 2, 1896 in Nelson Co. Rose Ella was the daughter of Floyd Lee and Mary Jane Weaver [previously married to a Mr. Weaver]. I know of no children.
4 - John Emmet, born c1863. No further information.
5 - McPleasant "Pleas", born Mar., 1865, buried in the family cemetery. He married Elizabeth G. "Lizzie" Sorrels, a daughter of George D. and Bethanie Fitzgerald Sorrels, Lizzie was born in Apr., 1872, Nelson Co., and is buried near Pleas. I know of two children: Bernice W., born c1915 and Matthew G., born c Mar., 1917.
6, 7 & 8 - Martha A., born c1869, Etta F., born c1872, and Emma L., born Jun., 1873. No further information.
9 - Nancy B. "Nannie", born Jun., 1873, married James E. Coffey, born May 1871, a son of Robert Wesley and Elizabeth A. Coffey Coffey. In 1900 they had been married for 10 years and had no children.
10 - Howard M., born c1878. No further information.
The title of this blog could also include Giles and Fitzgerald. All of these families intermarried and many of their children followed suit.
If I have calculated correctly:
Martha Jane and Robert Lee were first cousins, once removed and double second cousins, once removed.
Rose Ella and Robert Lee were second cousins and 2x third cousins.
Rose Ella was Martha Jane's niece; James E. was Martha Jane's nephew.
James E. and Rose Ella were first cousins.
James E. and Robert Lee were first cousins, second cousins and 4x third cousins
They* all go back to Edward and Ann Powell Coffey through brothers William Coffey who married Elizabeth Giles and Reuben who married her sister, Nancy. Reuben and William were sons of Edmond Steward and Nancy Barnett Coffey. Edmond was a son of John Coffey and Jane Graves. John was the eldest and best researched son of Edward and Ann.

*Including Earnest Drummond Coffey whose father was J. H. Vanvert Coffey and mother was Mary Ann Coffey. Vanvert was a son of Wayett [sic] Wesley Coffey and Nancy Coffey. Wyaett was a son of William Coffey and Betsy Giles. Nancy's parents are not known to me. Vanvert's wife Mary Ann was a daughter of George Washington Coffey and Mary Catherine Demastus [sic]. George was a son of Edmund and Martha Snead Coffey while Mary Catherine was a daughter of John Demastus and Mary Ann Coffey. Edmund, of course, was a son of William and Betsy Giles Coffey. Mary Ann was a daughter of Edmund F. and Elizabeth Burger Coffey who goes back to Edward and Ann through William and Elizabeth Osborne Coffey. Readers may remember that Jane Coffey, a daughter of William and Elizabeth is believed to be the mother of Jordan Coffey who has been shown by DNA testing to be a Taliaferro and not a Coffey.
They were the parents of at least 10 children:

The children of Billy and Martha Jane were:2 - Mary Jane married Robert Lee Coffey, born c1870 to William and Mary C. Ramsey Coffey. The marriage took place on Jan. 9, 1902 in Nelson Co. Mary Jane was born c1859 in Nelson Co., and was buried in the Rob Coffey family cemetery in Nelson Co. Robert apparently died before 1920 (He was 43 when they married) because Mary Jane lived with her brother Pleas when the 1920 and 1930 census was enumerated. Mary was 43 when they married and I know of no children.
Emma Jane, born Jan. 1, 1874 at Montebello in Nelson Co., died Apr. 7, 1960 in Waynesboro, VA and was buried at White Rock cemetery near Montebello. Emma Jane married Robert Alexander Coffey, born May 25, 1883 at Montebello, died Mar. 13, 1959 at Waynesboro. He too is buried at White Rock. I do not believe they had any children. Because of their ages at marriage, (Robert was 45 and Emma was 54) they may have been previously married to others.
Lafayette G. was born Mar., 1875 and married Rose Painter. Rose is buried at Pleas Taylor. No other information.
The next three children were Ida or Ada Bell, born Mar., 1879; Estella, born Sep., 1881, died 1934, buried Pleas Taylor; and Dandridge, born Feb., 1884.
Rosa Y. "Rosie" was child number six, born Oct. 11, 1885, died Aug., 1982 in Augusta Co. Rosie married Earnest Drummond Coffey on Jul. 26, 1904 in Nelson Co. He was a son of J. H. Vanvert and Mary Ann "Polly" Coffey Coffey, born Sep. 16, 1882 at Massies Mill, died 1968 in Augusta Co. Both are buried at the Springdale Mennonite Church cemetery in Waynesboro. Their childen were Herbert Less, Gilbert; William Van; Nellie; Perry Dodge; Davis Lee; Wilson Monroe; Earl Drummond; Mary A. and an unlikely Polly. She may be the same child as Mary A.
The seventh and last child was Henry M., born Mar., 1891. No further information.

The title of this blog could also include Giles and Fitzgerald. All of these families intermarried and many of their children followed suit.

Rose Ella and Robert Lee were second cousins and 2x third cousins.
Rose Ella was Martha Jane's niece; James E. was Martha Jane's nephew.
James E. and Rose Ella were first cousins.

They* all go back to Edward and Ann Powell Coffey through brothers William Coffey who married Elizabeth Giles and Reuben who married her sister, Nancy. Reuben and William were sons of Edmond Steward and Nancy Barnett Coffey. Edmond was a son of John Coffey and Jane Graves. John was the eldest and best researched son of Edward and Ann.

George was a son of Edmund and Martha Snead Coffey while Mary Catherine was a daughter of John Demastus and Mary Ann Coffey. Edmund, of course, was a son of William and Betsy Giles Coffey. Mary Ann was a daughter of Edmund F. and Elizabeth Burger Coffey who goes back to Edward and Ann through William and Elizabeth Osborne Coffey. Readers may remember that Jane Coffey, a daughter of William and Elizabeth is believed to be the mother of Jordan Coffey who has been shown by DNA testing to be a Taliaferro and not a Coffey.

James Solomon & Elizabeth Hatter Coffey
James, a son of Reuben G. and Margaret Snead Coffey, was born in Nelson Co., VA in Sep., 1835. He was still in Nelson Co. in 1920, a widower living in the household with his son Tildon.
In the 1900 census a grandson by the name of Reuben Coffey, age 16, was living in the household with James and Elizabeth. I have been unable to identify who Reuben's parents were.

Wyatt Coffey
A recent query in the Coffey Ancestry forum wondered about Wyatt Coffey, found in the 1860 Plumas Co., CA census. After checking my files I found that there was a Wyatt Coffey, born c1835 in TN to Thomas and Mary S. (Polly) Hipshire Coffey for whom I had little information. I also found a note from a researcher who reported this Wyatt had moved to CA before 1860. Except for that, she had not provided any additional information.
Other researchers had reported the marriage of Wyatt to Julia A. Hipsher on Oct. 4, 1854 in Grainger Co., TN. She was the daughter of Colbert and Jane Hayes Hipsher. Wyatt appears to have abandoned or divorced Julia to head west. Some years later (Aug. 30, 1883) Julia married Joel Mallicoat in Grainger Co.
A quick search of the census records found Wyatt Coffee, age 25, in the 1860 record for Indian Valley, Quincy PO, Plumas Co., CA. He was unmarried, living alone, and employed as a "packer."
By 1870 he was married and had two children. His wife was enumerated as Polly, age 30, an "Indian" born in CA. Their children were Thomas, age 9, and Martha, age 4, both born in CA and enumerated as "Indian."
The family was still in Plumas Co. in 1880. Children were Jeff, age 17; Martha, age 15; Ira, age 12; Harry, age 9; Rosa, age 4; and Eda [sic], age 1. Polly and the children were enumerated as "Indian."
Polly apparently died before 1885 when Wyatt was enumerated in the Clark Co., WA Terr. census. W. Coffey, age 45 (or, 49?), born in TN, was a saloon keeper. In the household was Ira, age 18; Harry, age 14; and Rosa, age 10.
I have not found any further information about Wyatt or any of the children except Rosa. The 1900 census for Salmon Creek, Clark Co., WA enumerated Rosie E. Coffee [sic], born July 1876 in CA, as a servant in the Andrew Belongia household. Rosie reported that her father was born in TN and her mother in CA.
A check of the WW1 draft registration cards found an Ira Coffey, age 24, in Vancouver, WA. He was born Jun. 26, 1892 in Vancouver, and was probably not the son of Wyatt and Polly.
Note that in The Edward Coffey Project I have mis-identified this Wyatt as having enlisted in the CSA on Sep. 15, 1862 at Richmond, VA. The Wyatt that enlisted was the son of Edmund and Martha Snead of Nelson Co., VA. The correction will be made in the next update of that project.

James Madison Coffey (VA, 1836-1923)
James Madison Coffey was born in Nelson Co, VA on Sep 15, 1836* to Charles B. and Theodora Everette Coffey. He was the eldest of nine children born to Charles and Theodora. [The obituary for his brother Peter Virgil names their mother as Ophelia]
On Feb 3, 1920 he was found as a widower in Massies Mill, Nelson Co, VA in the household with his son Robert. He died in Virginia on Aug 15, 1923, and was buried in the James M. Coffey/ Cox's Creek Cemetery, Nelson Co., VA.
James and Esther Jane Smith were married on Nov 2, 1865** in Nelson Co, VA. They appeared in the census on Jun 14, 1880, the census on Jun 23, 1900, and the census on May 2, 1910, in Massies Mill, Nelson Co, VA. Esther Jane, a daughter of John Smith, was born in Virginia on Feb 9, 1843, and died in Nelson Co, VA on May 11, 1917.
A source*** for Esther's death indicates that her birth date was in Oct., 1884. This is unlikely, since she appears in the 1880 census as James' wife in Nelson Co., VA.
She was buried in May 1917 in Cox's Creek Cemetery in Nelson Co., VA.
Her headstone indicates that she was the mother of 11 children.
Her name is spelled Easter in most census records, but spelled Ester in 1910.

Mrs. J. A. Coffey MASSIES MILL-Mrs. Selina Fitzgerald Coffey, 95, of Massies Mill died Friday morning at Liberty House Nursing Home in Lynchburg. Born in Nelson County, she was a daughter of Rueben P. Fitzgerald and Emelia Campbell Fitzgerald. She was a member of Jonesboro Baptist church and the widow of James Alexander Coffey. Surviving are two sons, J. K. Coffey of Lynchburg, and Robert B. Coffey of Detroit; four daughters, Mrs. Frank Williams and Mrs. Frances Kemp, of Roanoke Rapids, N. C., Mrs. H. H. Good of Richmond, Mrs. Leo C. Frank of Laurel, Md.; a brother, Conrad D. Fitzgerald of Staunton; six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Preston-Parr Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Hugh Boyd. Burial will be in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Flossie (Flo) Coffey RomanFlossie A. (Flo) and Byron Roman were married in 1928.
Flossie (Flo) Coffey Roman, 95, of Lynchburg, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005.
Born in Woodson, she was the eldest of four children born to O.V. and Ester Coffey.
She was a resident of Nelson County, and was the oldest surviving member of the Fleetwood School System. In 1928 she married Byron Roman of Sidney, Ohio. He was supervisor of the Southern Minerals Plant in Piney River. From 1943 until 1998 she and her family resided in Lewiston, N.Y. She moved to Virginia in 1998 and since October 2004 had lived at the Summit in Lynchburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron and brother, Ody William Coffey of Massies Mill.
She is survived by a son, Donald Coffey Roman and his wife, Jill, of Indianapolis, Ind.; and six grandchildren, Kimberly Krakower of Centerville, Blair Roman of Sausalito, Calif., Wendy Conner of Quincy, Mass., John Roman of Quincy, Mass., Michael Roman of Plymouth, England, Scott Roman of Newport, R.I.; and one great-granddaughter, Chelsea Walsh of Sausalito, Calif. Also surviving are her two sisters, Bernice Taylor of Monroe and Kathleen Taylor of Springfield; and five wonderful nieces she adored.
Flossie loved fishing, camping, gardening and was a proud member of the NRA. She was fearless in her approach to life’s challenges. She was well known for her culinary skills and loved to entertain with dinner parties. Mrs. Roman was a lifelong antique collector, dealer and appraiser. She and her husband were active members of the Lasalle Yacht Club in Niagara Falls, N.Y. They were competitive bridge players and active in several historical societies. Flossie reached out with energy for every life experience within her power; if you ever met her you would never forget her.
Mrs. Roman elected to be cremated with a memorial service to be held at a later date. Her remains will be interred at the Jonesboro Cemetery in Nelson County.

Reuben G. Coffey
Reuben G. Coffey married Nancy Giles, sister of William's wife, Elizabeth. I have not researched the Giles family, and do not know of anyone currently researching that family. Some that I have exchanged info with tell me that the Giles sisters were daughters of William and Margaret Giles, but I have no independent supporting data. Reuben and Nancy were married Sep. 5, 1801 in Amherst Co., VA. Reuben died Nov. 24, 1845 in Nelson Co.
Nancy must have died sometime shortly after the birth of her 11th child in 1824, because Reuben married for a second time, this time to Margaret Snead. Their first known child was born c1832. But, because Reuben had so many young children to care for by himself, he and Margaret may have married much earlier than it appears by the birth date of that first child.

I Reuben G. Coffey, of the County of Nelson & State of Virginia being of sound mind and disposing memory, but weak in body, do make and constitute this to be my last will and testament revoking all will or wills made by me.
1st. My desire is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid in the most convenient way that my executors may think proper, whom I shall hereafter name
2nd. I give to my daughters Betsey and Lucy and my son Reuben C. Coffey my tract of land on the Fork Mountain where Forbesh formerly lived, to be equally divided between them, share and share alike.
3rd. I give to my Reuben C. Coffey, my Cupboard and Bureau extra for past favors he had done for me which he shall not be accountable to my estate for in any future division. I also deem it unnecessary to say anything about the disposition of the negro girl Daskus which I formerly owned as I have heretofore sold and she is now the property of my son Reuben C. Coffey for which he has the bill of sale.
4th. I heretofore sold a tract of land lying on the Fork Mountain known by Clarks place to William W. Coffey for the payment of Six Thousand pounds of Toba which is hereafter to be paid and my desire is that the said sale shall stand good by one third of the payment or bond for said payment to be given to my wife, Margaret on the condition that she joins my executor or legal representative in making right of said to the said William W. Coffey.
5th. I give to my beloved wife, Margaret during her natural life or second marriage the one third part of all my estate of every description, which is not before disposed of to be enjoyed by her and her three children Meredith, Soloman and ____ and at the death of my wife Margaret, or second Marriage, she is at liberty to dispose of ?? childrens part between all my children in any that she may think proper, of the third part left to her.
6th. The other two thirds of my estate, at my death, my desire is that it shall be equally divided between all my children Milly, Polly, Nancy, Susan, Jane, Betsey, Fanny, Reuben, Winny, Lucy, Emily, Meredith, Solomon and ____ share and share alike taking into consideration what I have heretofore advanced to them which advancement I have made in writing.
