James Madison & Lydia Ann Wolfe Coffey

James was a son of Ausburn (var.) and Matilda "Tildy" Dalton Coffey.  Lydia "Liddy" was the daughter of Adam and Jemima McCoy Wolfe.  James, born in 1834, Tennessee, married Liddy in Grainger Co., TN in 1857.[1]  She was born in Grainger Co. in 1836.[2]

By 1860 the couple was residing in Rockcastle Co., KY where they remained for the rest of their lives.[3]

Between 1858 and 1882 James and Liddy had at least 12 children; three sons, the remainder were daughters.  There was one unnamed child that was born and died in Feb., 1882, sex also unknown.

First child born was Thomas Jefferson in 1858, Grainger Co., died 1934 in Jessamine Co., KY.  Thomas married Mary Alice McGuire in 1883, Rockcastle Co.   She was born in KY in 1865 and died in Madison Co., KY in 1940.  Their children were: Beulah, Martha, Lydia, Minnie and Willie, all daughters.  Thomas' burial place is not known to me.  Mary Alice is buried at the Richmond Cemetery in Richmond, Madison Co.

John Henry, born in May, 1861 at Rockcastle Co., married Eliza Margaret Langford in 1891, Rockcastle Co.  She was born in that county i 1856 and died in Mercer Co., KY in 1931.  John Henry died at Mt. Vernon, KY in 1951.  Their children were Minnie L., James Madison and Jessie.  Both John and Eliza are buried at the Maret Cemetery in Wildie, Rockcastle Co., KY.

The first daughter born to James and Liddy was Margaret Angeline on Aug. 16, 1863 in Rockcastle Co.  She died there in Oct., 1863 and was buried at Maret.

Glathia Jane, born Oct., 1865, married Joseph Love Ramsey in 1898, Rockcastle Co.  Joseph was born in KY in 1842 and died in Rockcastle Co. in 1901.  Glathia Jane died in Madison Co. in 1939.  Joseph's first wife was Martha Jane Bryant, born 1843, died 1895.  They had at least two children; Ella, c1866 and Gatie, 1881 in Renfro Valley, Rockcastle Co.  Gatie married Arthur A. Coffey in 1897, Rockcastle Co.  He was the son of Lee and Isabelle "Belle" Hiatt Coffey.  Lee and Glathia Jane were first cousins.  Glathia is buried at the Berea Cemetery while Joseph was buried at the Hiatt Cemetery in Renfro Valley.

Gemima "Mimmia" follower Glathia in Dec., 1866 at Rockcastle Co.  She never married and died at Rockcastle Co. in 1967.  She is also buried at Maret.

Matilda was next, born in 1868 at Wildie.  She married John R. Dotson on Oct. 5, 1893 at Rockcastle Co.  He was born in TN in Jun., 1872 and died in Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH in 1965.  Matilda, whose middle name was either Addison or Aderson - nicknamed Addie - died in Preble Co., OH in 1953.  They had Orla, Ila, Dewey, Margaret, Earnest, Honest John [sic] and Argie.  Orla married Walker Blanton, born c1884, died 1962.  Orla died in 1981.  Both are buried at Berea.  Honest John was born in 1903 and died in 1914 at Wildie.  He was buried at Rockcastle Co., but cenetery is not given on his death certificate.

Hulda was one of two daughters of James and Liddy that married a Ketron.  Her husband was George Nelson, born 1867 in KY to Allen and Bettie Hatfield Ketron.  He and Hulda married in 1897, Rockcastle Co and had children William Allen; James B.; John C.; Freeman D.; Lydia Loretta; and George Conley.  George was their only child not born in KY.  He was born in Indiana, and probably in Randolph Co.  Hulda died in Eaton, OH in 1951; George in Winchester, Randolph Co., IN in 1945.  Hulda is buried at Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester.  George's resting place in unknown to me but likely also at Fountain Park.

William Ausbon was the last known son born to James and Liddy.  He was born in Rockcastle Co. in 1873 and died there in 1964.  He married Cordelia T. Reynolds in 1895.  She was born to Tandy and Sarah Parsons Reynolds in KY in 1871 and died in Rockcastle Co. in 1913.  The name given on her death certificate as well as her headstone is Cordelia Tea Coffey.  Both she and William are buried at Maret.  Their children were Casper; Della J.; Grace; Vesta; John Clay; Unnamed male; William R.; and James Jefferson "Jepp."

Eliza Brannaman, born 1875 in Rockcastle Co., died in 1971 and was buried at Maret.  She never married.

MarionVictoria Ketron Reese
Cordelia "Delia" was the other daughter of James and Liddy to marry a Ketron.  He husband was Freeman, brother to Hulda's husband, George Ketron.  They were married in Rockcastle Co. in 1897.  Freeman was born in KY in 1875; Delia in 1878, Rockcastle Co.  He died there in 1928; she in Berea in 1952.  Both are buried at Scaffold Cane Cemetery in Round Stone, Rockcastle Co.  Their children were:  Johnny Love; Benton, Allen A; Daisy B.; Hagie  (?) M.; Thurman H.; Floy T.; and Marion Victoria.  Floy married Brandley Powell in 1937.  Marion Victoria married Leonard Reese.

The last named child of James and Liddy was Sallie, born c1879.  No other information.  An unnamed child was born Feb. 1, 1882,  It died that same month in Wildie and was buried at Maret.

More details are available in the Edward Coffey Project.  Corrections and additions are welcomed.

Elijah & Martha Coffey Coffey

Elijah Coffey Family
This Elijah was a son of Samuel "Sam" and Martha Wolfe Coffey, born April, 1881 in Grainger Co., TN.  Martha was the daughter of Jasper Newton and Lucy Jane Shell Coffey.  Jasper and Sam were second cousins with their common ancestor being Revolutionary War veteran Benjamin and Mary "Polly" Hayes Coffey.  Benjamin was a son of John and Jane Graves Coffey.  Martha was born in Hancock Co., TN in May of 1883.

I have not yet found a marriage record for Elijah and Martha.  The birth years of their 12 - at least - children, all born in Grainger Co., change from census to census making it difficult to document their birth order.

Their first child is thought to have been Martha, born c1899.  No further info

George Washington "Washie", born Dec. 29 1902, died Jan. 1, 1978 in Grainger Co.  Washie was twice married, first to Mandy or Manda Atkins (1903-1924) who likely died at or shortly after the birth of their only child, George Washington "Jessie" Coffey, born Jan. 1, 1924, died Mar, 1969 in Grainger Co.  His second wife was Gelina Atkins, a cousin to Manda.  I haven't found this couple in 1930 but, in 1940 they had a son, James, age 14.

Dexter Coffey Hedrick
Dexter, a daughter, is said to have been born in 1907 and married on May 5, 1928, Robert William Hedrick.  Robert appears to have died before the 1930 census because Dexter was a widow, living with her parents in Grainger Co.  They had one son, Robert William Hedrick, Jr.

Vara, fourth born, May 19, 1909, married Oscar Wallace on Oct. 3, 1926 in Hamblen Co., TN.  Oscar was born Jul. 21, 1901 in Grainger Co.  He died on Mar. 22, 1983 at Bean Station, Grainger Co.; she on Jan. 20, 1995 at Bean Station.  Their children were Minnie Ruth; Henry P. (Paul Earl?), Ruby Lee; twins Jerry and Perry, Charles Elmer and Oscar Lee.  Oscar and Vara as well as sons Jerry and Perry are buried at Bean Station Cemetery which I believe is also known as the Bean Station Baptist Church Cemetery.[1]

Samuel, born c1911.  No other information.

Walter Preston, born c1913.  No other information

Newton, Jul. 19, 1914, died Jun. 22, 1915 at Tate Springs in Grainger Co.

Thomas, born c1917.  No other information.

Ophia Coffey Coffey

Ophia "Ophie", born c1918, married Enos Garfield Coffey on Apr. 12, 1937 in Grainger Co.  She and Enos were related at least seven different ways as 3d, 4th, and 5th cousins.  Enos was the son of Charles Edward and Susan McDaniel Coffey.  Charles and Elijah were 4th cousins, once removed.  Enos and Ophie had at least two children, daughter Dussie (?) and son Charles W.

Irene, born c1920.  No other information.

Clint, born c1926.  No other information.

Henry, born Aug. 28, 1928, died Mar. 10, 2006 at Bean Station.

Washie, Newton, and Henry [perhaps other siblings as well] are said to be buried at the Atkins Cemetery in Thorn Hill.  In particular, they are said to be buried at the Atkins Cemetery in "Poor Valley" or, along "Poor Valley" Ridge.  There are several Atkins cemeteries in Grainger Co., found on Find-A-Grave including one with the name "Poor Valley" attached.  An internet search for this particular cemetery shows it in a densely wooded area.  At Find-A-Grave, this hidden cemetery is referred to as "Atkins Cemetery (Dixie Highway)" but, does not show any Coffey Graves.

Please contact me if you know exactly which Atkins Cemetery at which these Coffey families are buried.

Additions and corrections welcomed.

Lula Eloise Coffey

Lula was born c1866 in Caldwell Co., NC to William Elbert and Margaret Anne Kincaid Coffey and, was the third of at least seven children born into that family.  She married Corey [1] Thomas Cain c1885 in NC.  Corey was born Jul. 17, 1860 in Wake Co., NC and died Oct. 27, 1921 in Statesville, Iredell Co., NC.

Corey and Lula had at least three children, two of which survived to adulthood.  Their first child, William Elbert was born Nov. 10, 1886 in Burke Co., NC and died there on Apr. 5, 1887.  Their other two children, both girls, were born years apart, leading me to believe that more children were born that did not survive.

The second child was Mary Margaret, born Dec. 6, 1890 in Burke Co., died May 3, 1955.  I do not know where she died but, her grave site can be found at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Morganton, Burke Co.

Earle Thaddeus McGillicuddy
"Earle Mack"
Mary Margaret married Earle Thaddeus McGillicuddy in Philadelphia, PA on Sep. 28,1915.  The only census record found so far is the 1930 when they were still residing in that city.  They had one child then, a son also named  Earle.

Earle Thaddeus McGillicuddy was born to Cornelius and Margaret Hogan McGillicuddy on Feb. 1, 1890 in Spencer, Worcester Co., MA.  Cornelius was known professionally as Connie Mack.  Earle was also known professionally as Earle Mack.  He played for the Philadelphia Athletics baseball team from 1900-1914.  His father, Connie managed the Athletics for 50 years, from 1901 until his retirement at age 88.

Ivetta was the third child born to Corey Thomas and Lula Eloise Coffey Cain.  She was born in Burke Co. on Mar. 4 1899 and died on Mar. 6, 1982 in Statesville.  He spouse was Elbert Miller Shelton, born in NC on Oct. 22, 1897, died in Statesville on Aug. 10, 1972.  Elbert was a 1919 graduate of Princeton University.  Ivetta was also a college graduate but I have not yet found her Alma Mater.

After graduation, Elbert worked for his father, Joseph who was president of the Statesville Plywood and Veneer Co. in Iredell Co.  In the Statesville city directory for 1946-47, Elbert was listed as Vice-President and Sales Manager of the Statesville Plywood and Veneer Co.

"Eb" Shelton died of a heart attack at his home in Statesville, N.C. on Aug. 10.  He was born in Statesville and had lived there all his life coming to Princeton from Erskine College.  During World War I he joined the Naval Reserve, returning to graduate with the Class in 1919.  During junior and senior years he roomed with Bill Baker in 44 Blair.
After graduation Eb was association with his father in the Statesville Furniture Co and then served as president of the Statesville Plywood and Veneer Co. until retirement.  A community leader he served 11 years on the City Council, was active in his church, the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce.
"Eb" became one of 1919's most faithful participants at our June reunions together with his love wife Ivetta whom he married in 1927.  He was a loyal and generous supporter of the University even though at times perplexed by some of the reports from the campus.
The Class has lost a loyal member and a genial host to those classmates fortunate enough to have visited the Sheltons in Statesville.  He had missed recent reunions because of family illnesses but will always be remembered with deep affection by those who were privileged to know him well.  The Class extends our sincerest sympathy to his beloved wive, Ivetta.
The Class of 1919[2]

I do not believe any children were born to this union.  Both Elbert and Ivetta are buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.

Updates and corrections welcomed.

James Bert "Jim" Blunt, Jr.

This photo is from my personal family collection.[1]  He is James Bert "Jim" Blunt, Jr., son of Jim, Sr. and his wife Alpha Anne Delafield.  Jim, Jr. was born Oct. 18, 1882 in Sarepta, Webster Parish, LA and died on Aug. 24,1933 in Rush Springs, Grady Co., OK.

He married Miss Isabelle Allison in Rush Springs on Mar. 12, 1911.  She was born Nov. 14, 1892 in Chockie, Atoka Co. OK to Charles Edward and Irene E. Glossup Allison.  She died in Jacksonville, Cherokee Co., TX on May 12, 1967.  Both are buried at Rush Springs Cemetery.

Jim, Jr. was to me both a first cousin, twice removed and, a second cousin, twice removed.  On the Blunt side, he descended from Hugh R. Blunt (1822-1877) and his wife Mary Ann Bishop.  Hugh was also married to Mary Ann's younger sister, Bonita Bishop from whom I descend.  And, we both descend from James R. and Peninah Walker Bishop of Lawrence Co., MS.

My descent from Hugh and Beneta is through their daughter, Amanda (1859-1936).  She married James Monroe Braley and their daughter, Ora (1884-1984) married A. L. Coffee and were my paternal grandparents.

I like this photo for a several reasons.  First, it is large, in focus and without defect (spots, folds, etc.).  Another reason is his clothing.  He is wearing a conventional necktie, white shirt and suit.  His hat sits back on his head, giving full exposure to his face.  It was probably taken in the mid-to-late 1920's.

He is wearing leather wrist cuffs and gloves.  The flashlight, along with his watch and fob must have been prized possessions. I have seen portrait-like period photos in which the men were displaying pistols or rifles but, I have never seen one with the subject holding a flashlight.  The mustache was de rigueur.

Jim, Jr and Isabelle had four children:

Myrtle (1912-1999) who married Verdie Hiram Morris and had children James Vernor and Joyce.

Hazel Relura (1913-1994) who married Clarence David Roberts and had children James Bert and Clarence David.

Clifford Edward "Cliff," (1916-1997) who married Mary Louise Fausett.  No known children.

DeAlva (1928-living) who married Robert Eugene Eitelman (1926-1986).  Four chidlren, three still living.  Their first, James Robert was born Oct. 19, 1947 and died the next day.

Poll

The Edward Coffey Project is nearing the 4.7GB limit of a DVD.  I'm considering moving the data to a Blue Ray burner and was wondering just how popular they are today in personal computers.

So, please give me a bit of help and tell me if your computer does or does not have one or, if you're considering a purchase.

The poll is private and there is no way I can identify who responds.

It is at top right in the side bar.

Thanks!

Thomas Coffey & Elizabeth Smith

Back in 2006 I wrote a short blog about Smith Coffey, thought by me to be the youngest child born to Thomas and Elizabeth Smith Coffey.

Thomas was a son of John and Jane Graves Coffey and, a grandson of Edward and Ann Powell Coffey.  He was born on Mar. 7, 1742[1] in Essex Co., VA and married first Elizabeth Smith c1762 in Albemarle Co., VA.  Thomas died in Apr., 1825[2] in Wilkes Co., NC; Elizabeth is thought to have died between 1775 and 1780, probably in VA.  Thomas' second wife was Sarah "Sally" Fields, married 1778/9, probably in Wilkes Co., NC.

Thomas and Sally had at least 10 children, many of which I have written about in earlier blogs.  If anyone want more info, leave a note or send an e-mail.

There were about six children born to Thomas and Elizabeth.  Two that I want to write about today are Elizabeth, the eldest and, John Franklin, next eldest.

Elizabeth was born on Oct. 25, 1765 and died in Oct., 1852[3] in Monroe Co., IN.  She is buried there at the Coffey Cemetery in Ellettsville.  She married David Allen, born in VA in May, 1765 and died in Apr., 1848.[3]  He too is buried at the Coffey Cemetery.

Their children were:

Thomas, born 1792 in NC, died and is buried at Ellettsville.  A death date is not shown on his headstone.

Polly, born 1794, probably in NC, died and is buried at Ellettsville.  She does not have a death date on the stone.

John, born 1797, probably in NC, died Aug. 31, 1844 in Elletsville.  John married Eliza Coffey, the daughter of John Franklin Coffey and his wife, Hannah Wilson.  Of course, this John Franklin is the brother of Elizabeth, making John Allen and Eliza Coffey first cousins. Eliza was born Nov., 1798 in NC and died Aug., 1844 in Elletsville.  They were married in Sep., 1818 in Wilkes Co., NC

Following John was Jesse, born 1800 in NC, died Feb., 1881 in Monroe Co..  I do not know his wife's name but, there were at least seven children born to her.  They were James, born c1828 in KY.  The rest, all born in IN, were William, c1830; David, c1832; Nancy, c1836; Joseph, c1838; Louisa, c1840 and John Allen, c1842.  Jesse is also buried at the Coffey Cemetery in Ellettsville.

Hanna, born Jul., 1802 in Wilkes Co., married Abner Wilson, born 1804 in Burke Co.  He died in Monroe Co. in 1844, she in 1877.  They too are buried at the Coffey Cemetery.

Martha "Patsy," born in NC in 1804 married John Candler Corder of VA, probably about 1824 or a tad earlier and, probably in IN.  John was born in Jul., 1800 and died in 1852.[3]  Martha died in Dec., 1887 [3] and both are buried at the Coffey Cemetery.

They were parents of at least seven:

Mary A., married Jonathan L. Allen, a son of John and Eliza Coffey Allen.   Mary and Jonathan were first cousins as well and second cousins.  They too are buried at the Coffey Cemetery.  I haven't yet searched for children.

Eliza Jane, born 1829 in IN, died there in 1899.  She married Lorenzo [Dow?] Coffey, first cousin once removed, a son of Larkin and Catherine H. Wilson Coffey.  Larkin was a son of Thomas and his second wife, Sarah Fields Coffey.  Lorenzo and Eliza had at least two children:  Wayland Everett, born 1854, died 1919 and, Nora E., born c1878, died 1947.  Wayland is buried at the Coffey Cemetery; Nora at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Ellettsville.

Rachel, born 1832, died 1912, married Jason Coffey, another son of Larkin and Catherine H. Wilson Coffey.  Jason was born in 1829, NC, died 1871 in IN.  Both are buried at the Coffey Cemetery.  They were parents of Merritt V., Ira E., Cyrus V., and Esther Martha.

Elizabeth was next.  She was born in 1835 and died in 1841.  She is also buried at the Coffey Cemetery.

Stephen, born 1838, died 1909, married Rachel Wilson in IN c1865.  She was born in 1843 KY, died in Ellettsville in 1929.  Chidlren were John; Frank; William S.; Clara; Emma H.; and Martha.  Stephen and Rachel.  All of the children and their spouses are buried at the Coffey Cemetery.

Sarah, born 1842, died 1860, buried at Coffey Cemetery.

Martha, 1845, buried at Coffey Cemetery, death date not given on headstone.  She married Asbury Coffey, her double second cousin, born c1838 in IN to James Wilson and Malena Coffey Coffey.  James Wilson was a son of first cousins, John Franklin and Hannah Wilson Coffey; Malena was a daughter of Rev. Reuben and Martha "Polly" Dowell Coffey.  Asbury and Martha had children Mary; Charlie; Willie; Freddie and Ethel Malena.  Asbury and Martha, as well and their children and spouses are all buried at the Coffey Cemetery.

The last child of David and Elizabeth Coffey Allen was David, born 1808, died 1881.  He married Eliza McCowan, born c1799 in VA.  Their children, all born in IN, were Elijah; Nancy; Mary; William; James; Sarah and Margaret.

John Franklin Coffey married Hannah Wilson in Oct., 1796, Wilkes Co.  Hannah was born there in 1769 and died in IN on Sep. 12, 1862.

I know of five children born to them:  Rebecca who married John Wilson;  Cassandra; Eliza, mentioned above as spouse of John Allen; John Wilson, mentioned above as spouse of Malena Coffey; and Jane Graves[4], born Mar., 1811, died in 1855, Monroe Co., IN.  Jane married Alfred Martin "Martin" Coffey, another son of Rev. Reuben and Martha Dowell.  Alfred was born in 1807, Wilkes Co., died in1836, Owen Co., IN.  They had at least two children:  James Martin, 1837-1861 and Christopher Columbus, birth unknown, died during the Civil War in 1862 at Corinth, Perry Co., MS.  He is buried at the National Cemetery in Corinth, Alcorn Co., MS.  James is buried at the Stouts-Houston Cemetery in Ellettsville.

I have more information about many of these families.

Updates and corrections are appreciated.

[1] Unproven
[2] According to Laurence Coffey, Thomas "...was buried in Hull Hill graveyard..", and after Sarah died, she was buried next to him.  "Years later the cemetery became neglected, and almost lost..."  Laurence and cousin Newell Sanders "...had their remains removed to Harper's Chapel burying ground, where a suitable monument was placed above them."  Harpers Chapel is located in Patterson, Caldwell Co., NC.
[3] Headstone - birth and/or death dates for everyone buried at the Coffey Cemetery in Ellettsville are taken from their headstones.
[4] John, in naming this child after his grandmother seems to have had a concept of where his roots lay.

Cora Lee Coffey

Who was Cora Lee Coffey who married John McCoy Gragg?

There are two genealogies on Ancestry.com that tell us she was a daughter of Luther Coffey and Mary Crump.  They each report that she was born in NC in 1895 and that she died in May, 1973 at Lenoir in Caldwell Co., NC.

That sounded to me more like Cora E. Gragg, a daughter of Luther Gragg and Mary Crump, born Feb. 7, 1895 in NC, died May 14, 1973 in Lenoir.[1]

Cora married Grover Cleveland Coffey, a son David Columbus and Julia N. Baird Coffey.  He was born in 1893 at Caldwell Co., and died in Avery Co. in 1933.  They were married on Dec. 27, 1910 in Caldwell Co.[2]  The couple settled in the Wilson Creek community of Avery Co. and that is where Grover died in 1933.  He was buried at the New Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery[3] in Gragg, Avery. Co.  Cora was buried at East Hudson Baptist Church Cemetery, located in Hudson, NC just about a half-mile east of Hickory Blvd. on Herman Road.

It is implausible that after Grover died Cora married John McCoy Gragg,  John's wife gave birth to at least four additional children, perhaps five between 1951 and 1959.  In 1951. Cora, Grover's widow would have been 51 years old and likely beyond her child bearing days.

Grover and Cora's children were: Two unnamed infant sons, one born 1912, another in 1913; both died at birth or shortly thereafter; Myrtle Viola, born 1914, died 2003, married Avery Jerome Lyda; Esslene, 1918-1917, married Shelby Delon Gragg and was the informant on her mother's death certificate; Lora A., born 1921, died 1992, married Fred Lewis Mclean; Florence, 1926-1988, married Clyde W. Echard; and Grover, Jr., born 1929.

So, as I opened so shall I close:  Who was Cora Lee Coffey who married John McCoy Gragg?

Maj. James B. & Mary Jane Coffey Mulky

I've seen this family name spelled Mulky as well as Mulkey.  The latter is the spelling used by Kim Mulkey-Robertson, native of Louisiana and woman's basketball coach at Baylor University.

James B. Mulky was born in Indiana in Oct., 1826[1] and married Mary Jane Coffey in May of 1853 in Monroe Co., IN.  Mary Jane was a daughter of Lewis and Harriet Powell Coffey.  Lewis was seventh of ten born to Thomas and Sarah "Sally" Fields Coffey.

Although James and Mary Jane had a number of children - six that I know of and all born in Monroe Co., IN - only a couple lived to adulthood:

Alice, 1854-1855; Ethel, 1856-1856; Horace, 1858.  Death date unknown but not found after 1870 census.  Adelaide was born in 1861, died in 1862.

Two sons survived to marry and have families of their own.  The first was James Osmon, born in Sep., 1859.  I have not yet found his death date or, burial place.
"James Osman Mulky is a native of Indiana, born September 15, 1859 in Bloomington, Monroe County.  His parents are Maj. James B. and Mary J. (Coffey) Mulky.  He is the second son and fourth child in a family of six children, and was reared in Bloomington.
"He attended school until September, 1877, when he entered the State University, whence he graduated June 4,1881.  He afterward entered the emply of different dry goods merchants in the city, as clerk, with Wicks & Co., and L. Fields & Co.
"On September 10, 1883, he was appointed Assistant Postmaster, and is at present so engaged.  He has been for some time a member of the K. of P. and inpolitics he is a Republican.  He is a rising young man, and is quite efficient as a public officer."[2]
James married Margaret, an Irish lass in about 1887.  In 1900 they lived in Indianapolis, IN and, in 1910 they were in Chicago, Cook Co., IL.  Margaret died before 1930 because that year James was a widower living with his son Alfred J. in DePage Co., IL.  In addition to Alfred, they also had a son named Albert, born in Oct., 1889.  I have found nothing for him after 1910 when he was still living with his parents.

Frank Lewis, born Jun., 1863, died Jul., 1936 was the other son to reach adulthood.  He married Catherine Emily Parks on Jun. 8, 1893 in Monroe Co., IN and later moved to Oklahoma where he sold real estate.  They had but one child, Francis, born c1898 in IN.  Catherine was born in 1868 in IN and died in OK City on Mar. 27,1922.  Both are buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in that city.

[1] James was commissioned Major in Co. S, Indiana's 55th Infantry Regiment, USA on Jun. 11, 1862.  He was mustered out on Sep. 1, 1862 in Indianapolis.  Although a reason was not given in his Civil War record, it was likely because Mary Jane had lost another child.  Adelaide, who was born in 1861, died in 1862.

William Nathan & Ruth Allagura Coffey Livingston

William and Ruth were born born in Indiana in the year 1860;  he in August, she in December.  They were married in Owen Co., IN on Oct. 16, 1883 and two children were born to them in that county.  The first was Harry Clyde, born Apr., 1885; second was Glen Earl, born Jan. 9, 1887.  Both were born in Spencer.

By at least 1893 the family was in Oregon where third son, Frank W. was born in Aug. of that year.  The fourth and apparently last child, a son named Wallace Neil, was born in Oregon on Apr. 4, 1896.

William was a musician - which instrument is not known to me - and seems to have most often played in theaters.  During the silent film era pianists often accompanied the film being shown, adding drama, suspense and the like to films as they played to the audience.  This might be the type of musician that William was or, he could have been a classical musician and played with orchestras for actors on stage.  Later in life (1940) he gave his occupation as "manager" of the "musicians union hall" in Portland.

William died in about 1946 but I have not found his exact death date or place of burial.

Ruth, the 6th of 11 children was born to Wiley H. and Harriet Newell McDonald Coffey in Spencer in Dec., 1860.  Wiley, a son of Elijah and Mary Abby "Polly" Dyer Coffey, was born in Indiana in 1823 and died there in 1879.  Harriet was born in Indiana in 1830 and died there in 1912.  Both are buried at the Wylie [sic] Coffey Family Cemetery in Clay Twp., Owen Co., IN.  Her middle name, Ruth's middle name, Allagura is a mystery to me.

The first of Ruth and William's sons was Harry Clyde, born in Spencer, IN in 1885, was married in Oregon c1909 to a lady named Bertha.  Harry died in 1961 in Portland and I have no other information about him or his family.

Second son was Glen Earl, born 1887 in Spencer, died in Portland in 1952.  Glen worked quite a bit in garment houses, cutting cloth and sometimes worked as a tailor.  Sometime after 1930 and before 1940, he married a lady, recently divorced, by the name of Goldie Smith Winter.  Goldie said that she was born in Minnesota in 1904 and married a Mr. Winter with whom she had a daughter, Jean Winter, born c1929 in Oregon.  In 1930 Jean and her mother lived in Portland with her grandfather, William Smith.  Goldie's mother was deceased but, we know from the census record that she was born in Norway.

In 1940 only the child Jean was in the household with Glen and Goldie.  Goldie died in May, 2000 in Multnomah Co.  Glen had died some years previous, in 1952.  Glen apparently enjoyed traveling.  His name appears on a 1927 ship manifest arriving from Cherbourg in France at a port in Quebec, Canada.  He was traveling alone and, returning to his home at 828 Division St. in Portland.

Frank W. was the third son, born in 1893.  He was apparently married twice.  The first wife was a lady named Rosa and they were married c1920.  There is an Oregon death record for a Rosa Livingston who died in Coos Co., OR on Sep. 24, 1928.  When Frank died in 1963, his death record reported wife as Margery.  There is a grave marker for a Margery Livingston, born 1907, died 1979, at the Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.

Wallace Neil was the last known child born to William and Ruth.  He came along in 1896 and died in 1964. His wife was named Harriett.  Wallace served with the US Navy during WW1 and is buried at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

As can be seen, I haven't a lot of information on any of the sons and their families.  I would like to hear from anyone who can add to or correct any of this information.  I am particularly interested in locating their burial sites.

Update June 7, 2013

William Nathan and Ruth consistently appeared in the Portland, Multnomah Co. OR census record from 1900 through 1940.

According to Oregon Death Records at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VZW3-M3F, Ruth's other given name was Altazara.

Harry Clyde Livingston married Bertha F. Seely in Oregon in c1909.  They apparently had only one child, a son named Paul Vane, born in 1914, died in 1998, Multnomah Co.

Glenn Earl Livingston married Goldie Smith who had previously been married to a Mr. Winter.  She had only one child, a daughter named Jean Winter, born c1929 in OR.

Frank W. married perhaps three times.  First wife was Rose, born c1896 in OR. They appear in 1930 census for Portland.  He is also thought to have married a lady by the name of Margery and another by the name of Alberta May.  He and Alberta appear in the 1940 Multnomah Co. census.  Frank died in 1963.

Wallace Neil married a lady by the name of Harriet. When he registered for the draft in Apr., 1942, he named "Mrs. W. N. Livingston" as someone who would always know his address.  She could have been either mother or wife.  Wallace died on Mar. 14, 1964 and is buried at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.  I have found no other information about Harriet.

Wallace is the only member of this Livingston family for whom a burial place has been found.  See Find A Grave memorial 3909438.

John Clinton & Nancy Elizabeth Coffey Jacobs

What began as an attempt to correct a previous blog about a member of this family resulted in deleting that blog and starting over.  For some unknown reason I could not remove a link that connected that blog to a now deleted website.

Nancy Elizabeth Coffey was born on May 23, 1861 in Rash, Jackson Co., AL and died there on May 16, 1918.  She was born to the union of Rice Abner Coffey and his first wife, Mary Ann Coffey.  She and Rice were first cousins as well as double-fourth cousins.  She was the daughter of Benjamin B. & Mary Elizabeth Roach Coffey while Rice was the son of Alexander Hamilton and Nancy E. Weatherly Coffey.  Benjamin and Alexander were brothers as well as double-third cousins.  These families go back to Edward through Rice and Sarah Bradford Coffey, Rev. James Coffey and wife Elizabeth Cleveland to Edward's son John and his wife, Jane Graves.

Nancy Elizabeth married John Clinton Jacobs in Stevenson, Jackson Co., AL on Nov. 1, 1883. [1]  He was born on Apr. 22, 1855 in Beech Grove, Maury Co., TN and died in Scottsboro, Jackson Co., AL on Jun. 30, 1938.[2]

Their first child, a daughter, was Bennie Coffey Jacobs, born in TN in 1884, died in Scottsboro on Oct. 17, 1899 at the age of 15 years.  She is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro.

Elmer Pruitt was born in Coffey Co., TN in 1887 and died in Bridgeport, Jackson Co. in 1970.  He was involved with the Gunter Stove Works in Bridgeport for many years.  His wife was Lena Geneva Givan or Givens, born c1890 in Missouri.  They were parents of nine children:  Geneva, Bettie, Elmer, Jr., Sallie Belle, Rice Abner, Henry Grady, Lethia Ring, Nathan Bedford Forrest and Mary Jane.  Elmer, Sr. died in Bridgeport in 1970, Lena in Marion Co., TN in 1977.  Both are buried at Cumberland View Cemetery in Marion Co.  Lena appears in the 1910 Finley Twp., Christian Co., MO census with her parents and a large number of siblings.  The handwriting is small and blurred making it difficult to determine what exactly the surname is: Givan, Givans, Given or Givens.

Annie Theodosia "Dosia" was born in 1890, Coffee Co., TN, and married Mitchell Luther Harris of Cumberland Co., NC in Scottsboro on Mar. 14, 1910.  He died in Scottsboro in 1960, she in 1974.  She is buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro and he is probably there as well.  Their children were John Clinton, Roderick Edward, Dr. Elmer Jacobs; Dr. Ruth; Mitchell Luther, Jr.; and an unnamed son who was born and died in Feb. 1928 at Autauga Co., AL.

Henry Woodfin Grady was born in 1892, Maury Co., TN.  He married Sarah Louise Wilson in 1913, McMinn Co., TN.  Sarah was born there in 1893 and died in Scottsboro in 1988.  They too are probably buried at Cedar Hill but I have not found them there.  I know of a couple of children:  Nancy Elizabeth, born 1915 and John Clinton, born 1918, both in Scottsboro.

Rice Abner was born in TN in 1894 and died in Scottsboro in 1980.  He married Jewell Riggs, born 1898 in GA, died 1952 in Scottsboro.  Jewell was living with her paternal grandparents in Haralson Co., GA in 1900.  I have not located her parents.  I have not found the marriage record for Rice and Jewell and do not know of any children.

Veda Pearl was born in AL in 1896 and married Claude Evans Spivey of Rhea Co., TN in Dec., 1917 at Scottsboro.  They had at least two children, Carolyn, born 1918 and Lunita Jacobs, born 1925, both in Scottsboro.  Carolyn married William Bethel Wilson on Jun. 26, 1941 in Tuscaloosa Co., AL.  Their engagement was announced in the Tuscaloosa News on Jun. 15, 1941.[3]
Miss Spivey Is Engaged to Wed Mr. William Wilson
Mr. and Mrs. Philo Dayton Benham announce the engagement of their niece, Carolyn Spivey of Scottsboro, Alabama to William Bethel Wilson of this city.
The wedding will take place on the evening of June 26 at 7 o'clock in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Benham and Tuscaloosa relatives will attend the nuptial vows.
The bride-elect is the grand-daughter of the late John Clinton Jacobs, widely-known banker of North Alabama, and of Mrs. George Wesley Spivey of Dayton, Tenn. [sic].  She was graduated from Penn Hall Preparatory School in Chambersbury, Penn., and attended Sweet Briar College in Virginia where she was affiliated with the Kappa Delta sorority.
The bridegroom-to-be, known and admired in this city as Bill Wilson, is the son of Dr. and Mrs. John W. Wilson of Audubon Place and a nephew of Owen Meredith and of Commander J. E. Meredith (U.S. Navy) of Mobile.
Mrs. Wilson was graduated from the Tuscaloosa High School where he was a member of the S.E.A. fraternity.  At the University of Alabama he was affiliated with the Kappa Alpha fraternity and other social organizations.
Philo Dayton Benham was the husband of Veda's sister, Fletcher Pitts Jacobs.  Fletcher was born in Jackson Co. in 1899 and died in Scottsboro in 1962.  Philo was born - according to the marriage record - in Delaware in 1895.  He and Fletcher married in Jackson Co. in 1929 and, he died in 1960.  Both are buried at Cedar Hill.  I know of no children for them.[*]

The last known child of John and Nancy was Lunita, born in 1902.  She married Robert Martin Lane in Scottsboro in 1927 and had at lest two children; Robert Martin and Frances Fletcher.  Nothing more is known of this family.

[*] Jerry Dickinson wrote in a Jan. 18, 2013 e-mail that "Fletcher Jacobs and Philo Dayton Benham did have at least one child - Nancy Benham b. 29 Jan 1933 in Alabama d. 9 Mar 1967 - Fulton, Georgia.  Married a Steenhuis.  Found her SSN/1940 census/some ship passenger list.  She is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery."

Langston and Mervina Coffey Coffey

Langston Coffey was the son of James Coffey and his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Coffey.  James and Elizabeth were first cousins, children of brothers Joel and Nathan Coffey, themselves sons of the mythical Chesley Coffey.

Mervina Coffey, wife of Langston, was a daughter of Absolom Coffey and his wife Mary Lusk or Mary Beard.  My research notes tell the that the Absolom that married Mary Lusk might not be the same Absolom that married Mary "Polly" Beard.

I received an e-mail a couple of days ago reminding me there was a reply to a note which I posted on the Genealogy.com message board back in 2008.  The person (Linda) who wrote the reply invited me to view her Beard Family Wiki History page in which she attempts to make the case that Absolom married Polly Beard, daughter of one Hugh Beard and his wife Esther.  The Wiki author tells us that Absolom Coffey is "said to be the son of Nathan/Nathaniel Coffey and Mary Saunders" but, offers no evidence to support that claim.[1]

Mervina, born Mar. 22, 1814[2] and Langston, born Aug. 11, 1807[2], both in KY, were first and second cousins.  They married, probably in Alabama and before 1832.  In 1845 Langston was appointed first Postmaster of Coffey Town [3], Jackson Co., AL.  The first four of their (at least) six children were born in AL; the last two in TX.

Those born in AL were:

Orita Elizabeth, born Jul. 5, 1836, died in Morris Co., TX on Jun. 25, 1905.  She apparently never married.

Benjamin Benton, born Nov. 15, 1839 - Benjamin was in Titus Co. in 1860 and on census day, Aug. 22, was living with the John M. Cook family.

Julia Ann, born Aug. 6, 1843 - Julia made it to Titus Co. and in 1850 was there with her family.

James Wylie, born Jun. 28, 1846, died Apr. 18, 1880 in Morris Co., TX.  James married Mary Elnora Glass (no date).  They had three children:  Madora J., born 1867, died 1870; William Benjamin, born 1874, died 1938 and James W., born 1878, died 1929.  James W. married Martha C. c1870 in TX.  She was born c1850 in MS.  After at least 5 children, all born in Morris Co. between 1871 and 1879, she and James W. apparently split the blanket, so to speak.  James died in 1929 at Sanatorium[4], in Tom Green Co., TX. In 1900, Martha had been married to James Travis Cherry for 17 years and had two children, Jimmie and Myrtle.  The census record reports both of them as daughters.  Martha's son Richard Coffey was also in the 1900 household.  Cherry died in Titus Co. in 1905.  I have not yet found a death date for Martha.

Those born in Texas were:

Selina Perminter [sic], was born in 1849, in TX and probably Morris Co., and died there in 1904.  She married James Polk Hayes in 1870 and had at least two children; John B., 1872-1875 and William Z., 1876-?.  James was born in TN in 1845 and died in Morris Co. in 1922.  Selina died in Morris Co. in 1904.  Both are buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Naples, Morris Co., TX.
Obituary, Omaha Breeze, Omaha, Morris Co., TX, Aug. 3, 1922
James Polk Hayes was born in Tennessee, a son of William Hayes, and came to Texas in an early day settling at Old Snow Hill and spent his life in this section of the country; moving to Omaha, where he accumulated considerable property interests.
He was married to Miss Salione Coffey, daughter of Langston Coffey, another pioneer family of North East Texas, August 3, 1870 from which union two sons were born, the oldest dying at 3 years of age, and the second, William Z. Hayes, a prominent banker of Dallas, and who was with his father in his last hours on earth, survives: the wife and mother having preceded them both several years since.
Mr. Hayes had been a very strong man in his early life, served faithfully in the Confederate Army for a term of years, and went through many experiences which many of us will never know.
He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church at Old Spring Hill and was for the past many years considered and known as one of the leading members.
His body was followed to Spring Hill by many friends and relatives on the 28th and interred by the side of his wife after impressive funeral services.
The last child of Langston and Mervina was Louisa Victoria, born 1854.  She was with her family in 1860 but nothing else is know of her.

[1]The only evidence that I have comes from Tim Peterman, long time Coffey researcher and descendant of Chesley.  He wrote in Wilkes County Heritage some years ago that "Absolem Coffey was supposedly born in 1788. He married first to Mary Lusk and second to Nancy Chadwick. He probably settled in Jackson Co., Ala.  Joel Coffey was supposedly born on Aug. 3, 1790. He married Mary Knox in 1817. He died in 1850."  Tim cited DAR records, census records and the James Coffey [Langston's father] family Bible.

[4]Sanatorium is in Tom Green County sixteen miles northwest of San Angelo on U.S. Highway 87. It was never an incorporated town, instead, it was a relatively self-sufficient tuberculosis sanatorium. The postmark "Sanatorium, Texas" began with the opening of a post office on the campus in 1919 and disappeared on October 7, 1965, when the post office closed. [John C. Source for some Langston info received from Glendon T. Johnson of Abilele, TX (1995-96),   Langston, Brinton and Hugh were brothers, and in Titus Co. about 1850.  They and their wives are buried in Morris Co., TX, which in 1850's was part of Titus Co.

Ernest Arnold & Lucy Jasper Coffey Reichenbach

Ernest Arnold Reichenbach was born to Johan Samuel and Elizabeth Kubli Reichenbach on Jan. 19, 1879 in  Switzerland.  I have not yet found where he entered the US.  Lucy Jasper Coffey was a daughter of Moses and Margaret Catherine "Kate" Goode Coffey, born Oct. 11, 1881 in Lincoln Co., KY.

Lucy first married Walter Terry Mobley in Lincoln Co. on Jun. 15, 1899 [1].  They were the parents of two sons, Coy Brooks, born c1901 and, Walter Terry, Jr., born c1903.  Walter, Sr. apparently died because on Aug. 30, 1904 she married Ernest in Lincoln Co.

The family left KY sometime between 1907 and 1909.  Ernest, Jr. was born c1906 and Margaret Katherine was born in 1907, both in KY.  Their next child was Bessie, born c1909 in IN.  Louise, was also born in IN c1911.  By Jan of 1924 the family was in Sumatra, Rosebud Co., MT where they remained at least through 1930.  In 1940  Lucy and Ernest were living in Benton Co., WA.

Ernest died in 1965 in Medford.  Lucy died in San Diego, CA on Dec. 31, 1967 [2].  I have not yet found either of their burial sites.

Their children, including those named above were:

Ernest Arnold, Jr., born c1906; Margaret Katherine, born Apr. 24, 1907 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY; Bessie, born c1909 in Indiana; Louise, born c1911 in IN, Robert, born Jan. 27, 1914 in Sumatra, died May 31, 1932 in Sumatra, Julia, born 1917, married twice.  First was to Eldon Callaway, born c1911 in MT, died before 1940.  At least one child born to that union, a daughter named Roberta Adele Calaway on Sep. 23, 1936 in Los Angeles Co., CA.  Julia's second husband is said to have been Robert Mason Buslach, but I have no further information on him.  Following Julia was Millie, born Jan. 1919 in Sumatra and, Joseph W., born Oct. 19, 1921 in Sumatra, died Sep. 19, 1995[2] in San Diego Co., CA.  He is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

Lewis Russell and Bidant "Biddy" Moore Coffey

Lewis' will has been transcribed and can be found here.  In his will, he named his children Betsy, Rachel, Polly, James, Henderson, Shelby, Benjamin F.,Thomas, and Edward.  He mentioned his deceased son Jesse and named Jesse's daughter Sophronia as a legatee.  Son Cleveland may have been deceased without descendants as he is not mentioned.

Lewis Russell Coffey was a grandson of John and Jane Graves Coffey through his father, the Rev. James Coffey and his wife, Elizabeth Cleveland.  James and Elizabeth, through their 11 children are responsible for many of the Wayne and Pulaski Co., KY Coffey families.

Lewis was number 11, born Nov. 18, 1772 in Amherst Co., VA, died Sep. 29, 1850 in Wayne Co., KY.[1]    He married Bidant "Biddy" Moore on Dec. 10, 1795 [2] in Wilkes Co. NC, a daughter of Jesse Moore and Alley Johnson.  Biddy was born on May 3, 1775 in Albemarle Co., VA and died in Wayne Co. on Jan. 13, 1857.[1]

Eleven children were born to Lewis and Biddy.  They were:

Elizabeth G.
