Herbert G. Chumbley

Herbert & Myrtle Coffey Chumbley
(Thought to be their wedding photo*)
Herbert was the oldest child and son of William and Julia Catherine Lester Chumbley of Pulaski Co., KY.  He was born in Nancy, KY on Dec. 16, 1893 and died on Mar. 5, 1920 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY.

Herbert grew up in Pulaski Co., and on Jun. 5, 1917 registered there for the WW1 draft.  He subsequently served with Battery E., 124th Field Artillery of the US Army.

In Oct. 1919 he married Myrtle "Myrtie" Coffey, the second of four daughters born to Tolbert Nelson and Sarah Roberts Coffey.  She would be my sixth cousin.

Myrtie was born c1902 and perhaps in Whitley Co., KY.  Her sisters were Martha, born in 1899; Minnie J., born in 1904 and Lora, born 1907.  Tolbert died in 1907 and in 1914, Sarah married Andrew Cader Worley.

Herbert and Myrtie were married in Oct., 1919.  In Jan, 1920 they were "lodgers" in the Columbus Mining Camp at Hazard in Perry Co., KY.  The head of household was Fred Stephens and his wife, Shirley Ethel Chumbley Stephens, sister to Herbert.

Herbert and Myrtie relocated to Whitley Co. in Fed. 1920 where Herbert took a job in another coal mine.  Ten days later, on Mar. 5, 1920, he suffered second degree burns in a mine explosion.  His death certificate reports that he had been a resident of Whitley for 10 days; a resident of Kentucky for 21 years. He was rushed to the Louisville Jewish Hospital where he died.

Herbert Chumbley Death Certificate
Herbert was laid to rest at the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy on Mar. 6, 1920.

There were no known children born to Herbert and Myrtie.

She is reported* to have married John Calvin Williams in about 1923 but I have not yet found a marriage record.  She and John moved to Ohio where he worked in various machine shops.  They appeared there in the 1930 and 1940 census with a son, Herschel, born c1924 in KY.

John died in 1968 and Winfield in Scott Co., TN but Myrtle was not named as the wife in his obituary.  Myrtle is said to have died in Cincinnati, OH in 1961 but I have found no documentation or record of her burial.

Rev. Benjamin Dean & Ella Rue Coffey Lucas

Dr. Ben'j Dean Lucas
Rev. Lucas was a son of Dr. Thomas Ephraim Lucas, MD and his wife, Dorothy C. Hanna.  He was born Dec. 14, 1868 at Chesterfield Co., SC and died there on Mar. 12, 1956.  He and Ella, a daughter of Daniel Rufus and Mildred J. Lawman Coffey, born in Amherst Co., VA on Apr. 3, 1869 and died at Chesterfield on Apr. 12, 1936 were married on Jul. 8, 1903 at Lynchburg, VA.

Cert. of Reg. of American Citizen
Rev. Lucas went to China as a missionary, apparently arriving there in 1890, well before his marriage to Ella Rue in 1903.  Following the birth of their first son, Ben'j, Jr. on Sep. 9, 1906, Rev. Lucas completed a "Certificate of Registration of American Citizen" for the US Consul at Shanghai.  In that certificated he noted his birth date and place and cited Oct. 9, 1890 as the date of arrival in China "for the purpose of mission work."  It also named Ella R. Coffey as his wife and Ben'j as his son.  The form was not established until April, 1907 so, it is likely it was completed by Rev. Lucas that year to officially add the child to the family in accordance with any such requirements of the time.

Although their second child and son, Thomas Lawman Lucas was also born in China in 1910, no such form has been found for him.

Passport Application
In Apr., 1893 Rev. Lucas completed an application at the US Legation in Peking, now Beijing.  It was apparently required to replace an expired passport.

Wedding Announcement
We know from a report in the Lynchburg, VA Times-Dispatch of Jun. 23, 1903 that Ella had been teaching in China for the previous 8 years and that she intended to marry Rev. Lucas on Jul. 8 of that year.

--------------------------------

Mar 1910 Passenger List
The family arrived in Honolulu from Hong Kong on Mar. 25, 1910 aboard the ship Siberia.  We know too from the May 1910 Chesterfield Co., SC census that Ben'j, Ella and their two sons, Ben'j, Jr. and Thomas were living in that county with his parents.

I have not found them in 1920; perhaps the family had returned to China!?.  In 1930 they were back in Chesterfield where Ben'j was employed as a high school teacher and Ella, as a public school teacher.  Their two sons were still living at home with the parents.

In 1940, Benjamin was enumerated as married, wife absent; odd because Ella had died nearly four years earlier.  Ben'j Jr. and his wife, Zenith were renting space in Benjamin's home at the rate of $5 per month.  Jr. and wife did not yet have children.

When Benjamin died in 1956 his obituary, which appeared in The Florence Morning News at Florence, SC on March 13, page 7, revealed that he had been married again after Ella died.  His second wife was Irene Worley of Bennettsville, SC.
Bennettsville, March 12 - Dr. B. D. Lucas, 87, died at 2 p.m., at his home following an illness of two months.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hursey Funeral Home at Chesterfield.
Dr. Lucas was twice married.  His first wife Ella Coffey Lucas of Lynchburg, Va. died several years ago.  From this marriate three children survive; Mrs. J. Williams of Charleston, Dr. T. L. Lucas of Alexandria, Va. and Ben D. Lucas of San Antonio, Texas.
Other  survivors include his widow, Mrs. Irene Worley Lucas of Bennettsville; two brothers and a sister.
Dr. Lucas attended The Citadel and graduated in pharmacy from the College of Charleston.
Both Ella and Benjamin are buried at the Chesterfield City Cemetery.  Their graves can be found at Find a Grave, memorial no. 72025231 and 72025068.  Benjamin's parents are also buried at the Chesterfield cemetery.

Aaron & Susan Chrisman Barrier

Aaron and Susan of Wayne Co., KY had at least three children that eventually married into the Coffey family of that county.

The first was Richard, born Dec. 17, 1822, died Oct. 4, 1907 in Wayne Co.  Richard married Permelia Ann Loveall on Nov. 4, 1842.  Permelia was born May 7, 1826 in Wayne Co., and died there on Mar. 17, 1889.  Their daughter, Sarah Margaret Barrier was born Jan. 14, 1844 and died in Oil Valley, Wayne Co. on Dec. 2, 1932.

Sarah married James Nelson Coffey, a son of Nelson N. and Keziah "Kizzie" Watters Coffey.  James was born Mar. 23, 1835, perhaps in Eadsville, Wayne Co.  He died Feb. 20, 1915 in Oil Valley.  He and Sarah were married on May 9, 1861.  Both are buried at the Ingram Cemetery in Monticello, Wayne Co.

Sarah gave birth to at least 12 children:

The third of Aaron and Susan's children to figure into the Coffey families of Wayne Co. was Elizabeth, born c1830.  She married Josiah Dodson c1850 in Wayne Co.  Their daughter Susan Ann, born Apr., 1855, married Leander T. Denney c1880.  Leander was born to Cyrus and Betsey Littrell Denney on Jan. 2, 1857 in Wayne Co.  He and Susan had several children including Lottie Susan Denney who married Albert Coffey.

Albert was another son of Nelson and Sarah Emerine Worley Coffey.  He was born Apr. 7, 1891 in Wayne Co. and died on Nov. 13, 1966 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.  Lottie was born Nov. 11, 1893 and died in Cincinnati on May 7, 1969.  Their children were Earl Edison, Roy Lee, Clarence Nelson, James C., Ruby, James O'Dell, Wendell Albert, Susie O., Milus (?) I have some descendants of most of their children and, of course, their ancestors.  Drop me a note to add to or correct any of this information.

Note:  I have seen references to Ingram Cemetery as Ingram-Coffey and Ingram-Vickery-Goddard Cemetery.  It is located about 5 miles SE of Monticello on the Ingram Coffey Cemetery Road.  A map link is included below.

Burl & Camely Steele Coffey

Burl was a son of James Nelson and Sarah Margaret Barrier Coffey.  He was born on Jan. 14, 1884 in Kentucky - probably Wayne Co. - and died May 15, 1971 in that county.  He is buried at Elk Spring Cemetery at Monticello, KY.  Burl married Camely Steele, a daughter of John M. and Eliza Steele on Mar 7, 1903. Camely was born in Dec., 1884 in Wayne Co..  Her death date is unknown but, she is also buried at Elk Spring Cemetery.

Burl shares his headstone with his second wife, Emma Lee Gregory who he married c1941.  Emma was born Sep. 25, 1897 to George Washington and Gemima Elizabeth Worley Gregory.  She died Dec. 5, 1986.

Burl registered for the WW1 draft on Sep. 12, 1918 at the age of 34 years.  He and Camely lived in Barrier, Wayne Co. at the time where he was a farmer.  The record describes him as being of medium height and build with blue eyes and light brown hair. Twenty-four years later, on Apr. 27, 1942 and at age 58, he registered for the WW2 draft in Benton Co., IN.  He was described then as weighing 160 lbs and 5' 9" tall.  He eyes were still blue but his hair was gray.  Rather than Emma, he named Shoff Coffey of Oxford, IN as someone who would always know his address.  Perhaps he and Emma married later than 1941?

Burl and Camely were the parents of at least 10 children, all born in Wayne Co.:

Mabel, born c1905
Earnie, born c1907
Oscar, born c1909
Mayme, born Aug. 6, 1911
Mary Jane, born c1912
Leslie, born Aug. 24, 1913
Frederic, born c1915
Woodrow, born May 31, 1918
Dortha, born Feb. 13, 1921
Shoff G., born Jul. 29, 1925

Mayme married Addir R. Tuggle c1927 in KY.  He was born c1904 to James Wyatt and Rice Ellen Brown Tuggle.  Addie died Aug. 18, 1977 in Pulaski Co.  He was a resident of Lincoln Co. at the time of death and, is probably buried in that county.  There were at least two children born to this union:  Eugene (?) R., born c1927 and Lula Mae, born Nov. 14, 1929 in Wayne Co.

Cullem Leonard Coffey
Lula Mae married Cullem Leonard Coffey on Feb. 14, 1948, in KY and probably in Wayne Co.  Cullem died on Dec. 2, 2010 in Monticello, Wayne Co. and, was likely buried at Elk Spring.  Lula Mae died May 24, 2007 and, she is buried at Elk Spring.  Cullem was the son of Edward Cullem and Gertie Evana Taylor Coffey.

Shoff G. married Eva Mae Rainwater on Jan. 7, 1942 in Indiana.  She was born Feb. 12, 1923 in Liberty, Casey Co., KY to parents Louis F. and Grace "Gracie" Wilson Rainwater.

Death records for Shoff and Eva have not been found.  However, an obituary has been found for (second wife?) Adela L. Coffey, wife of Shoff G. Coffey.  She died in Fuquay-Varina, Wake Co., NC and, her obituary appeared in the The (Asheboro, N.C.) Courier-Tribune

FUQUAY-VARINA - Adela Laster Coffey, 59, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church, Angier.  Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Fuquay-Varina.

Sheridan L. "Sherd" Dobbs & Sarah "Sally" Coffey

Sherd Dobbs
Sarah Coffey Dobbs
Sherd Dobbs was born Sep. 4, 1844 in Wayne Co., KY and died in McCreary Co. on Dec. 17, 1941.  He and Sarah Coffey were married and were parents of at least four children.  Sarah was the daughter of Nelson N. and Keziah "Kizzie" Watters.  She was born c1846 in Wayne Co., and died Jan. 23, 1910 in McCreary Co.

Their children were:

Benjamin Franklin, born about Feb., 1870, married Luraney Coffey, born c1878 to Henry Baker and Sarah Elizabeth Dobbs Coffey.  Sarah Elizabeth was sister to Sherd and therefore, an aunt to Benjamin and, Benjamin a double first cousin to Luraney.

Ben and Luraney's children were:
Alice, born c1898; Katie (or Roxie?), born c1901; Florida, born Aug. 19, 1903 in Wayne Co., died Apr. 5, 1963 in Fayette Co., KY.  Florida kept it in the family and married Edgar Dobbs, Benjamin's triple first cousin, once removed and double sixth cousin, once removed.  Edgar's parents were Joseph Dobbs and Polly Ann Coffey, a daughter of Joseph and Louisa J. Jones Coffey.  I know of one child born to Edgar and Florida, a son Howard, born 1927, died Dec. 21, 1984 in Pulaski Co.  The last Ben-Luraney child that I am aware of was Ester Loraine, born Feb. 14, 1910, died Oct. 7, 1911.
Eli Dobbs
Eli, born c1872, married c1912 to Lettie (LNU), born c1894. Their children were Willer, born c1913; Austin, born c1918; Arthur, born c1920; Myrtle, born c1925 and Clifford, born c1929. Myrtle and Clifford may have been born in Florida.

Angelina, born Nov. 7, 1876 in Wayne Co., died Jan. 28, 1958 in McCreary Co. She married on Dec. 20, 1900 James C. "Jim" Coffey, born Jun. 6, 1879 in Wayne Co. Jim was the son of Richard Henderson and Catherine C. Jones Coffey. Jim and Angelina were first cousins; his father was her uncle.

Angelina and Jim were parents to at least eight children:

James Beecher Coffey
Ollie, born Oct. 16, 1901, Wayne Co., died Jan. 4, 1988 in McCreary Co.; India, born Dec. 7, 1902 in Wayne Co., died Jan. 1, 1987 in Kentucky; Saphronia Katherine "Frona" born Apr. 7, 1906 in Wayne Co., died Oct. 6, 1978 in McCreary Co.  She married George Washington Worley, born Mar. 11, 1901 in Wayne Co., died Jul. 24, 1974 in Scott Co., TN.  Their children known to me were Lona, Carrie and Lonzo.  Following Saphronia was Marie, born Aug. 31, 1910, died Apr. 11, 1976; James Beecher, born Mar. 8, 1911 in Wayne Co., died Aug. 6, 1971 in Kentucky.  He married Anna Young on Dec. 23, 1940 in McCreary Co.  Roberta, born May 7, 1913, died Mar. 22, 1914, McCreary Co.; Raymond R., born Jan. 29, 1915 in McCreary Co., died Oct. 15, 1937 in Danville, Boyle Co.; and finally, Lillie, born c1918 in Kentucky.

Thomas was the last child that I am aware of that was born to Sherd and Sally.  He was born Dec. 14, 1877 in TN and died Sep. 6, 1950 in Cooperative, McCreary Co., KY.  He married Julia Jones, a daughter of Charlie and Lizzie Jones, on Jan. 28, 1900.  Julia was born Feb. 19, 1879 in Slavans, McCreary Co., and died Feb. 21, 1940 in Cooperative.

Their children were:
Lillie, born Nov. 20, 1910 in Whitley Co., died Sep. 19, 2000 in Stearns, McCreary Co.  Lillie married  John Herbert Coffey, a son of Reuben and Mary Alice Vaughn Coffey on Nov. 23, 1933 in McCreary Co.  Lillie and Reuben were first cousins, once removed and second cousin to here husband, John Herbert.  I know of one child for Lillie, a son Dallas, born Nov. 1, 1944, died Oct. 4, 1947.
Following Lillie was Parker, born Jul. 10, 1913 in McCreary Co.  No further info.
Ester was next.  She was born Sep. 4, 1918 in McCreary Co., died Nov. 24, 2003 in KY.  She continued the family tradition by marrying Sterling E. Coffey, another son of Reuben and Mary Alive Vaughn Coffey.
The fourth child of Thomas and Julia was another daughter whose name I believe to also be Ester, or Dora Ester and have possibly confused the same child as two different people.  Whether or not they are the same, Dora Ester married Clyde Estill Coffey, still another son of Reuben and Mary Alice Vaughn Coffey.  Clyde was born Dec. 26, 1918 and died Dec. 22, 1968 in McCreary Co.  He and Dora were married on Jun. 11, 1941 in Stearns.
I plan to further check the "case of the two Esters."
