Cabaius and Pauline Orr Coffey

Cabius (Cabaius?) was a son of Ananias "Nias" and Jane Hindman Coffey.  He was born Nov. 6, 1811 in Kentucky and died on Dec. 17, 1878 in Ashland, Cass Co., IL.  He and Pauline were married Dec. 6, 1834 in Morgan Co., IL.

Pauline was born to unknown parents on Aug. 1, 1817 in Green Co., KY.  She died Jan. 1888 at Ashland.  Both she and Cabius are buried at the Page William Cemetery in Ashland.

Obituary from Cass Co., IL Historical Society newsletter of Jun. 1992:

Ashland Sentinel, Jan, 29, 1888.  Died at the residence of Lewellyin Davy of Oregon Precinct, Jan. 18, of dropsey of the heart, Mrs. Pauline Coffee, age 70.  She was born in Green Co., KY, Aug. 1, 1817. Her father died when she was six and she and her mother later removed to Morgan Co., IL in 1832.  She married Cabinis Coffee Nov. 17, 1834. He died Dec. 17, 1878.  They had seven children.  Two survived Pauline: Mrs. Frank Davy and Mrs. L. Davis.  Buried next to husband at Page-William Cemetery.

The obituary reports they were parents of seven children.  According to the Cabius Coffey family Bible, published by the American Bible Society in 1847, there were 12 children born to this family and only two lived to marry: first born Margaret J. Coffey, Nov. 11, 1845, died Mar 1, 1910 in Ashland and sixth born Elizabeth Ann Coffey, Mar 7, 1844, died Jul. 29, 1893 in Cass Co.

Marshall L. Coffey (1819-1904)

Marshall was a son of Ananias and Jane Hindman Coffey, born in Russell Co., KY on Apr. 28, 1819.

The first census in which I can identify Marshall is the Aug. 16, 1850 enumeration of Adair Co. Identified then as Martial L. Coffey, age 31,  head of a household and included his widowed mother, Jane, age 69, and sisters, Eliza, age 33; E. J. [Emily Jane], age 26 and L. C. [Louisa Caroline], age 23.

Coffey-Silky Marriage Record
Later the same year, Marshall married Jemima Silky, daughter of John.  The marriage occurred on Dec. 16, 1850 in Adair Co.¹

He and Jemima pursued the typical life of that era in rural America; farming and hoping for babies. The latter apparently never came because there were none recorded in the 1860 or 1870 households.

Coffey-Blaydes Marriage Record
Jemima died sometime between June of 1870 and November of 1881.  Neither a death nor burial record has been found.  On. Nov. 13, 1881, Marshall married the widow Mary Blaydes in Metcalfe Co., KY.² The marriage certificate is blank indicating a marriage did not occur.  Be that as it may, they lived together as man and wife at least through the 1900 Adair Co. census when he was 81 years old and she seventy-one.

A year before his death, a local newspaper reported "Uncle Marshall Coffey, one of our oldest citizens, went into a trance a few nights ago; says he heard music and saw some of his relatives."³

Marshall died on Jan. 3, 1904 in Columbia, Adair Co., KY:
"On Jan 3rd, 1904, the death angle [sic] came and claimed for its victim Mr. Marshal Coffey, who would have been 85 years old had he lived until April 28th next. He professed the Christian faith when 16 and joined the M. E. church South and has ever since been true to the faith which he claimed. He often remarked in his last days that he had not become worried in striving for that happy abode which awaits all who are true to the faith he claimed; [sic] He leaves an aged wife and many friends to mourn his departure. His remains are interred in the family cemetery."§
Marshall's middle name is said by some to have been Lock, but I have been unable to independently  confirm that.

The article reads "Mr. T. R. Price and wife, of Bliss, visited relatives here and attended the funeral services of Mr. Marshall Coffey and Thomas G. Keltner Saturday and Sunday." At the same time, another newspaper, The Interior Journal of Jan. 26, 1904 in Stafford, KY reported in an article entitled "In Neighboring Counties" that Marshall Coffey, age 85, had died "near Burnside." Burnside, KY is some 50 miles to the east and south east of Columbia. It seems unlikely the ground would remain so frozen through Spring and early Summer of 1904 that his grave could not be dug and his body moved to the burial ground until July. The closest "Coffey family cemetery" I could locate is one at Coburg in Adair Co.  There are very likely others nearby to Columbia.

Cabaius and Pauline Orr Coffey

Cabaius was a son of Ananias and Jane Hindman¹ Coffey, born Nov. 6, 1811 in KY, died Dec. 17, 1878 in IL, probably in Cass Co.  His burial site has not been located by anyone that I know.  Pauline was born Aug. 1, 1817 in Green Co., KY and died in Ashland, Cass Co., IL on Jan. 18, 1888.  She and Cabaius were married in Morgan Co., IL on Dec. 6, 1834.

Mr. J. Heath Vogel recently contacted me with information that his parents were in possession of the Cabaius Coffey family Bible and wished to dispose of it through auction.  In the meantime however, he generously took time to copy the following pages and send them to me for use as I saw fit.

Information about their death and burial sites would be welcomed.

¹ Jane was the daughter of Alexander Hindman of Green Co., KY.  There is some discrepancy about the marriage as well as the birth of Nancy, their first child.  See Coffey Cousins' newsletter of Dec. 91, pages 4-5, and Sep., 1992, page 11.  Some researchers place another child, Ananias (born 1846) between Marshall and John David.  See Coffey Cousins' newsletter, Dec., 1989, Page 2. John D. Coffey

John D. Coffey - the "D" may stand for David or Davis - was a son of Ananias and Jane Hindman Coffey. He was born Sep. 16, 1821* in KY and married Sarepta (var.) Chambers on Nov. 30, 1852.**  John is said to have died in 1859, but likely a bit earlier.  Sarepta married for a second time on Oct. 30, 1859 to Berry Coomer, born c1818 in Stokes Co., NC.  This couple remained in Adair Co. before moving to Cumberland Co. in 1900.

Sarepta and John D. had three children, all born in Adair Co.:

Coffey-Hurt Marriage Record #2
John W. was born Sep. 12, 1853, married Millie Hurt on Jan. 21, 1878 in Edmonton, Metcalfe Co., KY.  Millie was born Jan. 3, 1849 in KY and died in Cumberland Co. on Jun. 18, 1927.  John died on Aug. 1, 1935 in the Cole Camp Pct. of Cumberland Co.  Both are buried at White Hill Baptist Church Cemetery near Burkesville in Cumberland Co. The family appeared in the 1900 through the 1930 (John was then a widower) census but, I have been unable to find them in 1880.  I believe they had at least five children:  William D., born Apr., 1880, who remained unmarried and with his father until John died; James D., Jennie M., Winnie J., and Mary S.  I have not found any marriage records for the children.

Julia Coffey Marriage Record
Julia Ann, born Dec. 5, 1855, married George A. McKinney on Jan. 6, 1880 in Columbia Co.  George was born in KY in Aug., 1842.  Their children were George L., Leonard J., Sarepta P., and Lydia B.  There could also be more that I have not yet found.  They were in Columbia in 1880 and Gradyville in 1900, both places in Adair Co.

Third and last child was Lloyd M., born Mar. 21, 1857, died 1910 in Cumberland Co.  He married Julia A. Lacy c1883.  They had only one child that lived to adulthood; Ellis M., born c1895 in Cumberland Co.  Julia, born Apr., 1856 in KY, died on May 23, 1928 in that county.  Both she and Lloyd are buried at the West Fork Cemetery in Cumberland Co.

Sarah Chambers Coffey Coomer had several more children with Berry but I have not yet tracked them down.

Updates and corrections are appreciated.

Keltner and Coffey in Adair Co., KY

The Keltner and Coffey families have a history in Adair County. , KY.  I have not attempted to assemble all of the Keltner Clan but have tried to connect them to the appropriate Coffey families.  Corrections to this blog will likely be required as I did a bit deeper.  Reader comments are welcomed.

I believe it was Michael and Sarah Rogers Keltner, originally of Virginia, who are primarily responsible for the Adair Co. Keltners.  They had at least three children, two of which married into the Coffey Clan of Adair Co. and a granddaughter of the third who also married a Coffey.

Their first was Sarah who married Robert W. Price on Nov. 9., 1824 in Adair Co.  Their daughter, Lucy W., born Jan., 1841 in that county, and there married Thomas G. Coffey on Mar. 24, 1864.  Thomas was a son of Zidner and Margana [sic] Keltner Coffey.  Morgana was a daughter of Michael and Sarah and was born c1809 in VA.  Zidner and Morgana were married on Jan. 20, 1831 in Adair Co.

John Richard Keltner is the second child I found who married a Coffey.  He married Mary "Polly" Coffey, a daughter of Ananias and Jane Hindman Coffey on Dec. 2, 1829.  Mary died on Feb. 15, 1901 in Adair Co.  I have not yet found a death date for John, who was born c1804 in VA.  They had at least one son, Curtis Luther Keltner, born Dec. 6, 1851, died Mar. 26,1943 in Adair Co.  Zidner was a son of Ananias and Jane.
Obituary, Adair County News, Feb. 27, 1901
Mrs. Mary Keltner (nee Coffey) was born in Green county, Ky., on Dec. 14, 1815. At the age of 14 she was married to John Keltner and removed to Adair county where she lived until her death, which occurred on 15th day of Feb., 1901. Her husband was born in With [sic] [Wythe] county, Va., and at the time of his death lacked only a few days of being 96 years of age.

Mrs. Keltner was the mother of eleven children, five of whom died when they were quite small.  At the time of her death she had 48 grandchildren, 147 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren, making a total of 218, including her own children. "Aunt Polly," as she was familiarly called, was a member of the M. E. Church South, and during her long and eventful life lived a consistent Christian. Her last years were spent at the home of her son, C. L. Keltner, who cared for her as a loving son should. She was near 86 years old, and will be greatly missed.
Morgana is mentioned above.  She and Zidner had a number of children;12 in alI I believel.  One of their daughters, Sarah Ann, born c1835, married Joseph Price on May 13, 1853 in Columbia, Adair Co.  Joseph was born c1828 and is likely some relation to Robert W., also mentioned above.

Keltner Chart No. 1

A daughter of Robert W. and Sarah Nancy Keltner Price was Lucy who married Thomas G. Coffey, another son of Zidner.  Thomas G. was born Jan., 1841 in Adair Co., and died there on Mar. 10, 1924.  Lucy was born in Jan., 1841 and died in Adair Co. on Feb. 16, 1916.  The town listed on their death certificates was Keltner.

Lucy and Thomas G. Coffey are buried at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Columbia, Arair Co.

Curtis Luther Keltner is buried at Morris Chapel UMC Cemetery in Weed, Adair Co.  His death certificate reports burial at Morris    Chapel in Columbia.

Benjamin S. Coffey - Adair Co., KY

Benjamin S. Coffey was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives for the period 1865-1867 but, resigned in 1866.
There was a Benjamin S., age 19, along with a Joseph Coffey, age 17, in the 1850 Adair Co. census.  He and Joseph were clerks working for the merchant Willis Wheat and were enumerated with Wheat and his family.

At the same time in Adair Co. was the family of Martial (Marshall) L. Coffey, age 31; Jane, age 69 and Eliza, 33; E. J. (Emily Jane), age 26; and L. C. (Louisa Caroline), age 23.  Marshall and the younger girls were children of Ananias and Jane Hindman Coffey.  Ananias died in Adair Co. before 1850.  In addition to Marshall and his sisters in this census, He and Jane had at least six additional children:  Nancy, 1809; Zidner, 1810; Cabaius, 1811; Harriett, 1813; Mary, 1814; and Eliza, 1815.

Benjamin S. appears next in the 1860 Adair Co. census with Jane, age 69 [sic] as head of household, another female, whose name is not recognizable by me and, Benjamin, age 29 with Elizabeth R., age 22, George A., age 3, and Carrie J., age 1.  Elizabeth and the children are probably Benjamin's wife and children*.

Jane Hindman is said to have been born in Rockbridge Co., VA in 1781 and, I have little doubt that she is the Jane with Marshall in 1850.  The Jane in 1860, same age as 1850 Jane, was born in KY c1791.  One plausible explanation could be a matter of simply forgetting her age and place of birth by one of the other family members (or even herself) who gave information to the enumerator.

However, neither a Benjamin nor a Joseph are known (by me) to be children of Jane Hindman and Ananias Coffey.  If Benjamin was born c1831 and Joseph c1833, it would mean that Jane Hindman Coffey was between 50 and 52 years old when they were born, making her a bit unlikely to be their mother.  If her birth year was say 1791 instead, it's conceivable (no pun intended) that she could have given birth in her early 40's to two additional children.  The two boys birth years fall somewhat neatly after the last known child, Louisa Caroline in 1827.  For argument's sake, I'm assuming that Benjamin and Joseph were brothers.

So, my questions are:  Was Jane in 1860 the same Jane in 1850?  If not, who was the spouse of 1860 Jane and the father of Benjamin and Joseph?  Was this Benjamin S. Coffey the same Benjamin S. Coffey elected to the Adair state legislature?

William Zidner & Louise DeBolt Coffey

William was a son of Robert W. and Sally C. Compton Coffey. He was born April 8. 1892 in Columbia, Adair Co., KY and died on Dec. 18, 1961 in Gallia Co., OH. It appears - if I interpret correctly - from the marriage record (below) that Louise was born April 2, 1884 in Wetzel Co., WV. Her parents were John and Ida Boughner DeBolt.  They were married on May 27, 1919 in Akron, OH.

Robert W. Coffey was a son of Zidner and Marganna Keltner Coffey; Zidner, a son of Ananias and Jane Hindman Coffey of Green and Adair Counties in Kentucky.

William stated on the marriage record that he was employed by the Goodyear company in in Akron. Louise gave her occupation as a "domestic." From the marriage record we find that William had been previously married and divorced. My records show that he was first married to Maggie Helm, probably c1914, which produced a child, Eunice Katherine Coffey, born Feb. 14, 1915 in Ozark, Adair Co., KY., and died May 27, 1983 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH.

Louise was also apparently previously married because the record reads that she was "once restored." I take that to mean that her maiden name had been restored after a divorce.

Update Mar 8, 2012

Additional investigation of William and his families became bit muddled recently when I discovered that Louise had been married not once before William, but apparently twice before.

The 1920 census shows us that in the household with William and Louise were two LeMaster children; Harry and Cody.  In the above marriage record, Louise told that she was previously married to a Mr. Graves, they had divorced and she had her DeBolt maiden name restored.

While checking on who the LeMaster children were, I discovered that Louise had been married earlier to Fenton C. Lemaster and in 1910 the family lived in the Spencer district of Roane Co., WV.  Children in the household were Harry F., age 10, Bessie S., age 8, Ethrelda (?), age 4 and, Cody L., age 4 mos.

At some point between 1920 and 1922 Louise and William apparently "split the blanket."  In 1930 she appeared in the Akrom, Summit Co., OH census as a widow.  In the household with her was son Cody, age 20.  Sharing the household was her other son, Harry, with wife Erica and daughters Eleanor and Catherine.

In the meantime, and c1922, William appears to have taken a third wife, Lydia A. Williams.  They had at least one child, Mary F., born c1925 in OH.

William died on Dec. 18, 1961 in OH and was buried at Saint Nicholas Cemetery in Eureka, Gallia Co., OH.  Lydia was born on Sep. 22, 1895 in OH and lived until Aug. 2, 1991.  She too is buried at Saint Nicholas.
